Hey guys,
My friend just was home over reading week, he took his computer home with him, we were using it last night. Tonight he goes home, so for a matter of 2 hours he has his computer in the car with him driving home.
He gets it there, and plugs it all in, the mobo light comes on, but the computer doesn't fire up. Nothing spins. I had him check the front case connectors on the mobo, theyre all plugged in, the 12v rail and 24pin are connected... could this be a dead PSU? I've never had a dead PSU where it lights the mobo green solid.... any more ideas?
Computer has been running fine for a while, so its not like its not enough to power it. What else could he be missing connection wise, think maybe the button is fucked?
How do you fire it up again without the front power button? Place the screwdriver down over the POWER ON pins?

There is a difference between simply not turning on, or turning on but not posting. When the power button is pushed, do the fans in the case start spinning and what not, or does nothing happen. If it nothing happens, its probably a PSU issue. If the fans start spinning but the computer doesnt post, thats usually due to the motherboard or some other component touching the case.
If the first thing I said is what is happening, take the wire leads that goto the power button, quick cut the ends off that goto the button, and then just short them together really fast. If the computer turns on, then you know the button just isn't working. If it doesnt, try completely unplugging every and let it sit for 24 hours and re-assemble. Many times doing this solves a lot of problems.

Motherboard light comes on when switch flicked at back. Nothing spins when button pushed. Trying to get him to reseat everything..
The issue here is, it was all plugged in and working 2 hours prior, and the time it was not turned on, it was not even plugged in. I doubt a component dies like that during travel?

The switch on the PSU simply lets power start flowing through the PSU, it isn't the power button.
So from what your telling me nothing is wrong. When you flick the switch on the PSU it starts providing a low amount of current to the motherboard. You have to press the power button (Short the power leads on the motherboard) for it to send voltage back into the PSU, whereby the PSU then starts sending full current through all leads back to the motherboard.
Of course, I don't know why you would think that you shouldn't need a power on button. Thats pretty stupid on your own part bud. Because if you dont your going to have to either touch two wires together, or take a screwdriver to the motherboard every time you want to turn on the system.

Try what I said then. Cut the two leads to the power button, and making sure those leads are still connected to the motherboard, touch them together. If it works, you have a fucked up power button. If it doesn't, disassemble everything and wait 24 hours before putting it back together. Make sure to also remove the cmos battery.
Obviously before doing this make sure the power button's leads are in the proper location.

No need to cut any wires. Just remove the connector and touch it with something metal.
