Well since its only 50 bux now, i thought its a good time to buy one since it has a good library of movies. The question i have, does it play mkvs and avi files burned onto a dvd5/9? If it does, does it play it straight out of the box or do i need updates? Since my xbox is banned i cannot get on live so no way to get those updates.
Thanks.

In my case I only tried burned AVIs and no prob, and yes, you need the update, but you can get it of the net I think and just install from CD...not 100% there, but read it in the "console" section somewhere.

if u missed last major update then there is no way u can play avi's from dvd's

360 can not play mkv's, even if u try to stream it it will look like sd

besides u can't copy anything to your xhdd so getting it for that only reason is pointless

Yes i understand i cannot play it through xbox 360 itself with out the update, what im talking is the Hi-Def DVD addon that you can buy for 50 bux, and not the hard drive. Can the Hi-Def DVD ADDON play mkvs burned onto a dvd?

You can't play mkv files with the 360, mkv container format isn't supported as far as i know. I wouldn't waste my money on the drive, it's not like the HD DVD movie library is getting many new additions, with Toshiba discontinuing it.

100% correct, I tried MKV and never got it to work. Although some peeps have gotten it to work using TVersity (streaming via PC), frack knows how. As for burning them to a DVD and watch through the HD-DVD add on, no way I think.

And again you need that patch/SP 100% to watch any other format, AVI etc, as it runs via the 360. For 50 bucks its not such a bad buy in my eyes, as prices on HDDVD films will drop as well. And there are some good films released so...still I am waiting for MS to launch a Blue-Ray version...I guess it will happen sooner then later.

Well that sucks that you cant play mkvs, but i guess its pretty cheap now and hd dvd has a lot of good movies which will only go down in price. Will have to watch rips on my computer.
Thanks for the help.
