|

Went to a pub quiz tonight, was pretty good, our team came third out of 12, so we did ok. The guy who was giving me a lift home got moody and wanted to leave so I'm home early.
Now this was was supposed to be general knowledge as it came in that section. Well anyway, one of the questions was "define a parsec in detail", now I knew it was used as a unit of distance measurement in space, so that is what I put.
Apparently that was wrong, only two teams got it right as far as I know. I just looked up the definition, this is it:
A unit of distance equal to that required to cause a heliocentric parallax of one second of an arc, equivalent to 206,265 times the distance from the earth to the sun, or 3.26 light-years.
I was just wondering, is there anyone here who knows that offhand!? Like fuck is that general knowledge! The teams that got it right must have looked it up on their phones or something.

I know it is approximately 3 light years, but not that other stuff...

the ones who know the answer probably just remember it from science lessons, just remember that its 3.26 = parsec or something.
No pub quiz is that hard near me, where the fuck do you live mate? lol

I was talking to a guy from another team and he says he put down that it's 3.26 light years (after googling on his phone), but he only got half marks.
He got hold of the answer sheet after the quiz and apparently the answer they required for full marks was basically that definition I posted.
As for the quiz being solid, well most of the questions were ok, just this and a couple of super specific sports questions. I think they just wanted a stupidly hard question in there and some guy just pulled the information from the internet.

Jenni dear, did you delete the post I just made? (Edit: Lol, nvm!)
I studied about this in an astrophysics class I took last year, but hell if I remember anything about that.

I think it is safe to assume this is not general knowledge, and those who do know about it probably looked it up due to starwars.

I play pool and darts and I drink and flirt with women when I go to the bar....that type of thing would annoy me. Not because its not interesting but fuck, the bar is the bar, not astrophysicis class
