PostPosted: Sat, 16th Feb 2008 00:02    Post subject: Dog, can't decide
My uncle has a 13yr old laika dog. Apparently he's a drunk and doesn't care about
the dog anymore. The dog doubled its weight in the past months and my uncle
doesn't take her out more than 1 time per day. So my cousine asked me to take
the dog. Especially since the dog is quite complicated and I am the only person
the dog loves and respects. Actually no one else can really handle her.

I live together with 2 friends and I think i could talk them into it.

But I don't know about me. I really love her. And I can't look at my uncle
fucking with her anymore.. I want to give her a home, love and peace
'til she dies. But on the other hand I work like 7hrs a day and don't
know if that's oke for her. Actually my uncle is either drunk or sleeping
so I guess he doesn't have more time for her, still..
Still I just can't decide. What do you think?

My roommates won't allow me. They asked me to give them time
to think about it.
I really want her..

Pretty old dog. The move to a new home could very much be the last I'm afraid. If she has been with this "uncle" her whole life, a move at her age could put a strain on her, stressing herself to death. The weight gain may be due to other problems, age related.

Difficult decision. Good luck, speak with someone with dog experience and decide.

Squirrely: Now come on y'all. We can't waste time arguing. There could still be survivors out there. We need to hunt them down, and kill them.
Beary: How about we kill them, and then rape their bodies so we can use their blood as lubricant.

Dogs are a lot of work dude.. I don't own one myself but everyone I know moans about how tedious it can be at some point.. Constant walks, and not to mention getting used to picking up shit with your hands.. and a bag of course but still, your picking up crap.

Not something I would enjoy Laughing

heartbreaking situation.

If the dog has doubled her weight he is overfeeding her. Prob forgets he already has.

If your roomates aren't into it then you can't do it because they prob won't treat her good when you are not around. Plus it sounds like you don't own your own place and this could cause problems for you when you have to move to another place. Even if you own your own condo it might be in the strata rules no pets.

If I was you I would go with what Nouse said. Find her a good home. You can contact a shelter and see if you can list her there. They might screen potention owners for you. It doesn't sound like she is in immediate danger from your uncle so she could stay there until a family is found. You can go over on a day off and walk her.

It is true that dogs like to be around people but well adjusted dogs should be fine if they are left alone. Mine is fine, he just goes to sleep and on good days he goes into a secure dog run that is 12 Ft by 30 ft.

You could try some animal adoption web sites and forums that can help you find a good home. Some people use craigslist.

Lot of older people like the idea of older dogs that are more settled and house broken.

@snop
Your hand don't stink if the dog is kept clean. I have a husky and you can't smell him AT ALL in the house. Exp if they are an inside dog.

@Mortibus
No way. Kids are much more. You can lock a dog up but you can't lock your kids up. Dogs don't need money to go to uni too. Razz

i didn't ment financially

wait till u'll have your own

and about the smell, i have very sensitive sense of smell, i visited some rich ppl and they probably spend on their dog a day more than i spend in a month on myself and i still felt the minute i entered that they have dog, so it's complicated

Well if you have allergies or something.

It does depend breed too. Some bulldogs and wrinkle dogs have bad skin problems and they just smell.

You cant expect your friends to have a dog in thier house if they dont want it. Personally I wouldnt want one of those things within 100 ft of me, but of course some people like dogs.

If its true what your uncle is doing then i'm sure you can find another home for the mutt

It sounds like you don't like dogs. Did one bit you?
I like animals but I find the yappy ones really REALLY hard to take. Altho I have a parrot which is almost worse.

It takes 20 mins to wash some dogs and towel dry them off. I use a teatree oil body (antibacterial) wash on him and conditioner. He is cleaner than some people on the bus and public transit I think.

@Mortibus
Thanks to you Sad Sad Sad Razz I might have to reconsider. Maybe some people can smell a bit dog and just won't tell me. I gotta start asking people now.

Only some dogs smell, not all.
I got a dog, and it only smells when I let it run for a long time in rainy weather.
A quick shower and it's not smelly again.

I hate you.

It's amazing to hear that some people don't like dogs, wouldn't wanna live in a country that generally doesn't like dogs. Then again I don't have to pick shit up from the ground, not sure why that's a rule, it's great for the soil and grass.

If my roommates won't allow me to take her I will have to find her a better
home some place else. But this isn't as easy as you guys think.
She is 13yrs old. No one wants to have a 13yrs old dog with fucking overweight.
She's going to die soon. Most of the ppl don't want to get a dog knowing that
it isn't going to live more than a few months/yrs.

And the biggest problem is that she doesn't trust ppl except me.
If ppl are drunk/nervous/shy/afraid (of her) she realizes that the second
she sees a person and will bite or shit..

And you have to recall that she's a real wolf, lone wolf. She doesn't
interact with ppl the way most dogs do.
She has her own unbreakable will. And she may love you, but she won't
get into a relation with her owner like a 'normal' dog does.

Pistol knows what I am talking about here. Huskies are quite the same..
But not in such an extreme way like a laika who has been abused by a drunk.

A medium or big dog that desn't move A LOT (like a 3 hr walk in the woods or the whole day on a farm) must have only one big meal per day. My boy here is 12 and he runs and plays like a pup when outside
