Recently TrueCrypt 5.0 came out, with the possibility of encrypting your system partition and placing a bootloader in your MBR to decrypt. My question is, would it be possible to completely encrypt the entire drive, and load the bootloader onto a USB drive or similar? How difficult would this be?

Some motherboards support booting from USB, right ? So, you should check the documentation to see if making a bootable USB is supported.
EDIT: Why don't you just use a (hard) password with a normal boot loader ?

or the key file on usb stick (better make a copy.. those things don't last too long)
