Can't really find anything on the via-arena forum,
so i thought i'd ask here

Few months ago i upgraded the comp at my dads house with 1gig (256 before) and worked fine.
and now i come back and notice its back using only 256
Now the weird part is that if i leave only the 1gig piece in, it still shows only 256.

Took the ram home for testing and both are working ok.
now i came back with 5 diffrent pieces (all working) tried al sorts of combinations and it never will go any higher than 256.

So it must be the motherboard right?
tried updating drivers and putting BIOS settings to default.

Is there anything left i can try? Would a format do any good? Or should i just tell him to buy a new motherboard
cus running xp on 256mb is really annoying

specs:
Athlon XP 2200+
Radeon 8500 (yeah its not really ment for gaming Smile)
motherboard: VIA KM266-8235

anyway thanks for reading Smile

Try updating bios as dingo_d said.

Also check the BIOS for any RAM-related settings like how much should be set for any existing built-in graphics and so on.

See if you have RAM limit set in Win XP. To see it try this :

Start-> Run -> type "msconfig" without the quotes
go to BOOT.INI tab and see if you have something like this :

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /maxmem=256

If you have, click on the "Advanced Options..." and uncheck /MAXMEM box.

OR

Edit "Boot.ini" on system drive root and delete the red part.
