They already have a patch in the works - prob out the end of the week.

I wouldn't call the bugs a major problem but the game itself seems to lack in major areas something patchs won't be able to fix... and if they do somehow then the game was simply released to early and the intended content never made it in... which I certainly wouldn't see as "excellent support"

*edit* Also a big hint of a game being released to early is when a patch comes extremely fast it usually means they shipped it knowing of certain bugs.

You don't seem to be very familiar with Stardock much, or else you would know how ridiculous everything you just said is.

As opposed to other companies who just dump a product out on consumers and maybe fix a handful of issues and move on, Stardock releases their products as a kind of "beginning platter" to play with before enhancing, adding, tweaking, ect ect. In short, patches come out soon and dont end anytime soon. Besides this, they also assist modders in any way they can, as you can tell from visiting their official forums and reading over the discussions.

This especially has me excited:

Prior to release, our internal testing of the game has produced a lengthy list of suggestions for future updates (1.01, 1.02, 1.03, and so on)

stardocks copy protection is a unique way of getting people to buy your games by offering good after sales support rather than releasing a game and fixing a few bugs they will listen to there customers and implement some of there ideas trying to make the user base happy before they move on.
people will remember the cool devs who didnt abandon there game and be more willing to buy there future releases
Quote:
I don’t like piracy. I don’t like people using stuff my friends and I worked very hard on for years without compensating us. But I also can make the distinction between piracy and lost sales. That’s a distinction that most DRM and copy protection schemes ignore.

The bottom line on copy protection is that if you create a greater incentive for someone to buy your game than to steal it, those who might possibly buy your game will make the choice to buy it.

With Galactic Civilizations II, we put no copy protection on the CD. But to get updates, users had to use their unique serial # in the box. That’s because our system is backed by TotalGaming.net’s unique SSD service (secure software delivery) which forgoes DRM and copy protection as we know it to take a more common sense (I think so anyway as a gamer) approach of just making sure you are delivering your game to the actual customer.

Any system out there will get cracked and distributed. But if you provide reasonable after-release support in the form of free updates that add new content and features that are painless for customers to get, you create a real incentive to be a customer.

As I mentioned earlier, Galactic Civilizations II was success in terms of actual sales, critical reception, and most importantly, satisfaction by strategy gamers.

Sins of a Solar Empire is taking the same route. In fact, we hope to have a free update available the first week of availability with new maps, new options, and new features. We consider ourselves lucky. We get to make a game and play it and then get to update it based on talking to our customers. It’s a great system.

And I think most gamers will agree that a system that rewards people for buying your product is preferable to one that treats them like potential criminals.

he seems pretty cool, he knows everyone who downloads there games wouldnt have bought them anyway but by offering patchs and game updates (like new content suggested on there forums etc) with the need of a legit copy to attain them the people who would have bought there product will be more likely to.

And he is completely right.

The more copy protection there is in a game the more unlikely is i will buy it, especially if i need to use a crack anyway since no way in 2008 i'll continue to have a pile of cd/dvd next to my computer just to start a game.

This is a certain buy for me and though the game is .. nice now (i dont find it exceptional) i'm sure it will improve greatly in the next months.

Shut up the game is perfect, don't say anything bad even if you have experienced a problem. Don't you know how hard it is to be a software developer? That's not a bug, its a minor glitch..no wait, a feature! Its to make sure you build up some rage to take out on your opponents when you actually find one..

You okay there dude, can't you find your pills?

This game is alright. Although the AI is either very good or pretty dumb. I left my game running for 6 hours whilst I went out. Came back and nothing had changed!. Except I just got a lot richer. All I lost were a couple of squadrens of bombers and fighters.

Heh, feel like we should be running a campaign "Pirates for Stardock" or something Laughing

But yeah hopefully not too OT but I am already right about to spring for the expansion pack bundle with GalCiv2. Taking a look at this link just proves beyond a doubt how Stardock supports their products, with a 24 dollar expansion pack(with other companies usually a few units thrown together) that reads like a full-blown sequel:

http://forums.galciv2.com/?aid=170595#1444075

And it just amazes me how many posts and work frogboy(Brad Wardell) is able to put forward into SINS while also on the last leg of development towards the major Major expansion pack coming soon for GalCiv2.

Played a bit of pirated copy and I guess I'll wait a bit more to see how they patch it. It's not the lack of campaign that is bothering me anymore. I just don't like how it plays.

Units are quite unbalanced. I only build light frigates and with a Capital Ship they overpower everything. Well, IF I catch anyone, ai just constantly jumps away whenever you have stronger force. Just recently I was killing one damaged CapShip with 10-20 light frigates (much faster than CapShip) it took me at least 5 mins and all the ai did was constantly jump from one planet to the other. Enough time that his backup came.
It takes forever to destroy one ai and when you do that, others just gangbang you. A compliment of stupid diplomacy where it is almost impossible to ally with anyone, since there is impossible to complete enough missions in given time. Only fair games are when you lock teams so you have couple of ai's with you, but then it’s just a bigger duel game.

Anyway, game has a lot of promisse, but it was surly rushed.

btw when ai was running from me i just attacking his home world and he brought his run away fleet back to try and stop me

AI is currently pretty cautious. It will run away if it's outnumbered, which leads to less full-on battles and more raiding which is not what some people want.

But seriously, wouldn't you save your ships when you're attacked by a superior fleet, too?
I know I would. And yeah, the game is meant to be played against human players.
I'm sure the AI will be tweaked over time, but you'll always get the best battles in multiplayer with other people.

It doesn't turn in to raiding at all. What I've seen is that the ships jump in, then immediately turn and jump out. My squadrons sometimes will pile up on one and take one out, but that's about it.

Funny lil anecdote thought I'd share... Went to Best Buy yesterday just to return something and thought I'd check out the game section, see if this game was in stock and if copies were just sitting there or whatever. Well.. there was a sign for it and price and everything, but no copies. So I asked a blueshirt who actually seemed a notch above the rest of the vacant lifeforms there about the game.

He said, quoted loosely, "Yeah we got the game in yesterday, about a dozen copies, which is pretty normal for a non-blockbuster game. All were sold within about an hour or two. There were a few other customers asking about the game as well. Guess we should have got more ordered."

I think it is freaking hilarious how many copies of other games with massive marketing budgets(not to mention DRM budgets) are released to sit dormant on store shelves while a little known developer releases a game published by a company most have never heard of that literally flies off the shelf. So, in other words, it sells out by positive word-of-mouth alone. Gives me hope for the future. Laughing

they do come and try to stop you if you attack one of there planets though even if there fleet is likely to die.

if you want to raid find a pirate base and have fun shooting there huge fleet, takes around 8 cap ships and alot of electronic warfare frigs/cruisers to kill them unless you build one of the death star type weapons and whack there planet first

Changes:

I figured out that I get much better access to my stuff if I disable all pinning in options, because it'll still show whatever you have selected in the box. Otherwise I quickly got tired of scrolling that damn thing. This game is awesome.

Download version is $45 right? Retail is only $40 plus you get a manual. They make you pay for the download servers they lease out.

the download version is the collectors edition aparently.
but all you get is the sountrack and a printable research tree but i bet normal copys can download them anyway.

download version has to be the same price as the recomended retail version anyway its a condition all the publishers use thats why sometimes they seem expensive compared to shops.

even if you buy the retail version you can still just download stardocks launcher thing and use your serial key to download the game anyway though so its not more expensive because your paying for the servers they lease.

nah this game is meant to be played vs human opponents. the AI is not too much fun to play against as it's usually pretty passive and almost always flees if you have stronger fleet.

may get better over time as the game gets some patches, but for now, only get it if you got someone else to play it with.

I made it through the tutorials and started a game up, but to be honest the game felt very generic. Is there something that comes to light later in the game that maybe the tutorials don't cover? I tried to enjoy it but it just felt meh.

On the other hand, Ive put maybe 20 hours into GalCiv2 DA over the past 2 days and its been a blast.
