Best Buy employees the dumest people on the face of this planet. Your better off giving your computer to your grandma with a hammer.

An aquaintance I know called me up cause his GF's laptop stopped working. Basically it gets stuck at the windows is loading screen. He takes it into the geek squad and they claim it's the HD right off the bat. So they were gunna charge him 80 dollars to look at it, charge more money for the HD, then charge to install it then charge for labor fee. Just cause they instantly "conducted" it's the HD rather than windows just fucked up and needed to be reinstalled.

So for you who don't know what your doing, when windows doesn't want to work, that means you must go out and buy a new hard drive!

Wow, that is fucking sick. I bet they are to lazy to format the PC.

I think they_HAVE_ to do an HDD analysis, before they can jumb to a conclution like this.

You can't get screwed if you demonstrate some knowledge, even if you don't know how to format, letting them know that you believe that is the issue, they would be more caustious.

I couldn't stomach their bullshit anymore man. If men walked the earth in disguise as snakes it would be Geek Squad. In the 6 days alone that i was there they pulled some pretty decietful shit.

Some lady came in with a PC saying it's got tons of viruses, etc. A lot of the Geek Squad team are people who worked on the sales floor that later transferred to Geek Squad based on gaining the qualification after so much time on the Computer floor. Well most of these guys knowledge goes as far as running a virus scanner and THATS IT. Everything else was escalated to the "Master Inspector" (can't remember the corny ass titles for different postitions) Who sent it back down to these clowns with some pretty lame instructions.

Anyways, they told me to clean the dust out of her PC and run Adaware and Norton, then proceed to charge her $170. When I think about it most of their solutions to problems was using compressed air to remove dust which magically eliminates problems. I can count a dozen occasions where I was told to do that. I can't remember a single time where they truthfully handles a situation, most of it was bullshit, and if you don't run with the bullshit as an employee you're out. That's exactly how I got fired, told this dude looking for a Video card to check out Newegg. Laughing

Most of their employees are scared as shit. The only advantage to working there is this little trick: They have these stupid rewards cards in Bestbuy where the more you buy the more money you get toward store credit. Some of the guys there were using a buisness account for the card which is untraceable and swiping the card on EVERY customers purchase who did not use the card. This resulted in $4k in store credit in a couple months, they would then have friends ring them up with the card and they'd get away with sound systems, PS3's, etc. This has been going on for close to 2 years and NONE of them have been caught, I estimate they've totaled $30k in store credit.

Anyway I work at a REAL PC shop now, although buisness is buisness we are a lot more honest then Geek Squad. At least we don't Charge $4326.39 for installing Windows. Laughing

Ok I'm done, Sorry. Laughing

yea my dad got fleeced from a car that kept fucking up.

i cant remember what kept happening but i think it was somethind to do with the engine not wanting to start alot or the engine kept dieing.

he was stupid enough to goto the same local garage around 5 times and each time they claimed it was something different.... bet those fuckers knew exactly what it was but because my dad is over 50 they probably thought they could fleece him, if he was some body builder hard as nails freak i bet it would have been fixed first time Rolling Eyes

he had the sense to just sell it on as quick as he could once it seemed to be working fine again though atleast and bought himself a better car

Best Buy basically hires pimply face teens off the street with no experience and has them "fix" computers. They even make house calls. My GF's brother was friends with one, and when the guy came over his pickup line to my GF (before we dated, otherwise I woulda kicked him in the throat) was "I renewed your IP address" even though he had no reason to lol.

Welcome to corporate fucking America. If any of you have worked in a big software company, you would find that 90% of the employees are nothing more than static meatballs with bullshit position names stamped on their forehead who spew out incredible amounts of bullshit through a medium known as "internal newsletters". They sit in their office all day long and throw around big terms such as "cloud computing" or "enterprise level management solutions". The only reason that people even buy their shitty overpriced excuses for products is:
a) they themselves have no idea what they are doing
b) support that comes along with the product
c) marketing buffs pitch it to them so that the buyers are left thinking "ZOMGZ I CANT LIVE WITHOUT TEH JAVAzzzZz!?!?!?"

You wouldn't believe how many times I've found applications with "industrial strength security" that use simple XOR algorithms with hardcoded keys as the main crypto used for encrypting all the sensitive stuff.

But hey, as long as it has a nice GUI and support, people will still keep buying it ($200k/year).

Main reason why I don't work with the "big guys" any more; can't stand all the people who have no fucking idea what they're talking about.

It can all be described as such:
The size of a company is inversely proportional to the efficiency of its products and/or employees.

You know, I just took my aunt's computer to format and re-install windows after she managed to make the computer almost useless with spyware -- and it happened almost overnight. The thing was so fucked that I couldn't even be bothered to try and remove the shit (in fact I don't know if I would have even been able to).

but you know, to my aunt and uncle who are like 50ish and for whom this is their first computer, they have no clue what to do. I could just imagine them getting ripped off to high hell showing up with this thing to a BestBuy or something and getting sold on a couple hundred dollars in labour plus probably a legit version of windows + norton security or whatever other bullshit they tried to sell them on to keep the computer from doing this again.

Yup, pretty much does the trick everytime. But seriously, ask a 50 year old computer illiterate toi do that and I doubt they would know what to do Wink

Formatted, installed XP Pro SP2, nvidia MB and gfx card drivers, M$ Office 2003 SBE, Acrobat, Avast AV, Spybot S&D, and IE7 ... thing runs like a charm now Smile

If there isnt a problem that i cant fix myself (not that i can fix everything, but i am good at reading and following directions) i bring it to a privately owned computer repair store.
I'd never bring it to best buy or anything like that. Like its stated above, all they do is run norton and other anti spyware/adware/virus scanning programs and shit. Not gunna waste 50 bucks for shit like that

IE7 was prob the reason it got fucked anyways Razz

Anywho I personally think your better off with one security suite than installing 2+ protection programs unless it's a really shit old computer lol. I think NOD32 has one and it's low profile. I installed kaspersky IS on my moms amd xp 1700 system (only uses it for net) and the thing fucking crawls when opening something now lol.

Anywho I stopped working on the laptop. The stupid fuckin kid I was fixing it for wouldn't shut up about the god damn thing. He was literally txting me 10 times a day asking about it hows it going is it working yet what was wrong with it etc.

Finally got fucking sick of it so I never finished the job. Just reinstalled windows and left ALL the drivers out so now he can't get it to connect to the internet or anything. Gave his laptop back and told him windows works but didn't tell him nothing else did lol. He gets home and now he's txt'd me another 15 times that one day whining like A little bitch so I told him he's an impatient ungreatfull fuck and he can take it to geek squad and let them fuck it up even more.

yeah, they said they wanted to use IE, but before they were even using an old version that hadn't been updated in over a year Razz

The problem with installing non-freeware programs is that if they stop working because they are *ahem* illegal, they won't be able to get them running again. Spybot S&D actually comes with free real-time protection. And yeah, it is a AMD 3200+ 64 with 1GB of OCZ ram, A8N-SLI MB ... exact same case/motherboard as that other alienware clone case I have.

I have a sneaking suspicion that my uncle clicks on all sorts of porn banners which is probably how the computer got fucked up.

old people need AV + spyware protection, would't install that crap on my computer though Razz

nouse -- put a cracked version of sandboxie on there.

http://www.sandboxie.com/

It is such a time saver, when everything gets screwed up you just delete the sandbox.

Also it's a great app for running keygen's as you can see what they do.
