Some very strange picks gta, diablo wtf?! I guess some of you skipped games with 'the best story' so here are my picks you should play if you didn't and you wanna now what best is:

I would say the first place is a tie between Grim Fandango and Planscape Torment these two have taken storytelling to another level,
second place goes to longest journey (only the first one) amazing story and adventure game
third place deus ex the best story and atmosphere to date in a fps.

Still, some opinions are debateable - like saying Steven Seagal is the best actor in the whole world, or that Diablo had a really good story Wink

I'm honestly surprised not more people said Warcraft I, II and III. Frankly, I doubt most of you people played the single player. The Warcraft Universe is incredibly developed and the story is so perfectly fit....

Deus Ex is my #2 because it was fucking amazing, but it really does take a huge backseat to warcraft... I have a feeling most of you weren't even playing games when they were released Razz

I'm also a bit surprised about some picks, but anyway.

As many I nominate Mafia, but not to forget Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit) and Psychaunauts, also Gothic2. Some long complex rpg might be good too, but I often get bored before it get interesting.

The human Mage Medivh, scion of a mortal human and one of the last guardians, comes under the influence of the long dead dark Titan, Sargeras. Mad with lust and power, he offers the world of Azeroth to the bloodthirsty Orcs in exchange for the Titan's powers and unswerving loyalty of the Orcish Horde.

The Orcs begin a very swift invasion of Azeroth but are, at first, beaten back and Medivh himself is slain, putting an end to his quest for power and domination. However, fortunes turn when the Orcs assassinate King Llane, sack Stormwind Keep (the capital of Azeroth), and drive the humans from Azeroth Far far north into the Lordaeron subcontinent.

The single player storyline is basically a frame tale for combat and devoid of plot development during missions, which is usual for early RTS games but in contrast to some later ones, including StarCraft and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The game is set six years after the fall of Azeroth in the First War in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. The Orcs have decided to conquer the lands to the north and acquire Lordaeron for their empire, and the battles to follow would later be known as the Second War.

The Orcish Horde staged a renewed invasion against the Humans. The survivors of Azeroth had fled to Lordaeron and the remaining Human nations banded together into the Alliance to withstand the Horde. They were joined by the High Elves of Quel'thalas and the Dwarves of Khaz Modan. The Alliance repelled assault on the southern shores of Lordaeron but came under siege in Quel'thalas and Khaz Modan. Gradually, the Alliance armies repelled the Horde. They faced treachery from the Nation of Alterac, which had started working with the Horde when the invasion began.

The Horde itself had become divided when Gul'dan split off his Stormreaver clan. Together with Cho'gall and his Twilight's Hammer clan, he searched for the Tomb of Sargeras. Orgrim Doomhammer, Warchief of the Horde, needed to dispatch some of his forces to deal with Gul'dan, weakening the Horde's front.

Eventually, the armies of the Alliance pressed into Azeroth and laid waste to the Orcish main base at Blackrock Spire, a battle in which the Alliance lost lord Anduin Lothar, their military commander. The final battle was fought at the Dark Portal, the gateway between Azeroth and the Orcish homeworld Draenor. The Archmage Khadgar destroyed the portal but did not seal the rift between the two worlds. This would enable Ner'zhul to stage a new invasion in the expansion pack Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. The Orcs that had not fled to Draenor through the portal before its destruction were either killed or rounded up in internment camps. Orgrim Doomhammer, the leader of the Orcish Horde, disappeared at this point.

The plot of Beyond the Dark Portal takes place after the events of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness. The Orcs, now under the leadership of Ner'zhul, staged a new invasion of Azeroth and overwhelmed the citadel of Nethergarde, which guarded the remnants of the portal. The Alliance itself had been splintered after the Second War and Kul Tiras and Stromgarde had withdrawn their support. The arch-mage Khadgar summoned heroes of Azeroth, Alleria Windrunner, Danath Trollbane, Turalyon and Kurdran Wildhammer to rally the forces of the Alliance. The Horde was beaten back and Khadgar decided to take the initiative to push through the Portal into the Orcs' homeland. Before being pushed back, Ner'zhul managed to steal the spellbook of Medivh which was needed to create new Portals.

The Alliance gained a foothold and made preparations to seal the rift forever while the Orcs reorganized. Khadgar needed the spellbook of Medivh and the Skull of Gul'dan to accomplish it. They razed the fortress of Auchindoun, seat of Ner'zhul's Shadow Council. While the Alliance army and navy only barely held out, Khadgar managed to acquire the items with help from the Laughing Skull Clan. Ner'zhul managed to open portals to the Twisting Nether and escaped through one of the new Portals. The violent energies began to destroy Draenor and also threatened Azeroth. Khadgar destroyed the Portal on the side of Draenor to prevent harm to Azeroth, trapping the remaining Alliance forces beyond the Dark Portal in the dying land of Draenor. Khadgar and the warriors of Azeroth then entered one of the portals not knowing where it would lead to avoid being killed by the violent rifts tearing the planet apart. With the release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, it is revealed that the Alliance forces actually remained on Draenor rather than escaping through a portal as said in Beyond the Dark Portal's ending. They are still alive and are currently fighting to prevent another invasion of Azeroth.

The events of Warcraft III occur after a timeskip from the previous title in the series. This period was originally intended to have been documented in Warcraft Adventures, but that game was canceled in mid-development.[17] The game would have chronicled the events after the Horde's defeat by the Alliance, including the rise of Thrall and the eventual revival of the Horde. At the start of Warcraft III, Thrall is already Warchief and the Horde is again in the midst of warring with the humans.

The game's plot is told entirely through cinematics and cutscenes, with additional information found in the Warcraft III manual. The campaign itself is divided into five sections, with the first acting as a tutorial, and the others telling the story from the point of view of the humans of Lordaeron, the Undead Scourge, the Orcs, and the Night Elves.

The game opens with Thrall, warchief of the new Orcish Horde, waking from a nightmare warning him that the return of the demonic Burning Legion is imminent.[18] After a brief encounter with a man called "the Prophet", and fearing that his dream was more of a vision than a nightmare, he leads his forces in an exodus from Lordaeron to the forgotten lands of Kalimdor.[19]

Meanwhile, Prince Arthas Menethil, a Paladin appointed by his father, is fighting demon-worshipping orcs. He is assisted by his mentor, Uther Lightbringer, a paladin.[20] Arthas arrives at Strahnbrad and it is in chaos. He defeats the Orcs there, however others escaped with villagers from the town. Arthas follows them and meets up with Uther, together they defeat the "Black Rock Clan", however 2 villagers and a footman are sacraficed to the Orcs old Gods. After defeating the Orcs, Arthas joins Archmage Jaina Proudmoore, with whom he investigates a strange plague that is spreading across the lands of Lordaeron. The plague coincides with the rise to power of a shadowy "Cult of the Damned".[21] To their horror, they find that the plague kills and turns human victims into the undead. Arthas proceeds to kill the plague's originator, Kel'Thuzad. He arrives at another town, only to find that it is about to be attacked by a large army of Undead. Arthas then sends Jaina to call for Uther. After he defends the city, Uther arrives just in time and the Undead are defeated. He then hunts down the dreadlord Kel'Thuzad serves, Mal'Ganis. Arthas, blinded by a desire to kill Mal'Ganis, follows the dreadlord to Northrend after burning one of Lordearon's cities, and killing most of it's infected populace. The Prophet, after previously trying to convince King Terenas, Archmage Antonidas, and Arthas to flee west, appears before Jaina and begs her to go to Kalimdor as well.[22] Arthas pursues Mal'Ganis to the icy north, and decides to aid his old dwarf friend, Muradin Bronzebeard, and find a powerful sword called Frostmourne, which Muradin was looking for. Upon discovering the blade, Muradin learns that the sword has a curse upon it; Arthas disregards the warning and pulls the sword from its pedestal.[23] The blade kills Muradin, and Arthas goes on to kill Mal'Ganis with the sword before leaving his men to die in the frozen north as he is possessed by the blade. Some time later, Arthas returns to Lordaeron a hero to the unwitting populace, and greets his father, the king. Frostmourne whispers to Arthas, "You no longer have to suffer for your people. You no longer have to bear the weight of your crown. I've taken care ... of everything." Arthas then goes up to his father and kills him. After his father falls to the ground, he declares, "This kingdom shall fall. And from the ashes shall arise a new order, that will shake the very foundations of the world."

With the death of the King, Lordaeron lies in ashes. Arthas, whose soul has been stolen by Frostmourne, meets with the leader of the dreadlords, Tichondrius. Tichondrius assigns the fallen prince a series of "tests". First, Arthas must retrieve the skeleton of Kel'Thuzad. However, Tichondrius says that they will have to bring it to Quel'Thalas, but the ghost of KelThuzad, who accompanies Arthas througout the tests, orders him to kill Uther and the rest of his Silver Hand Knights, and then places Kel'Thuzad into his fathers Urn. He then journies to Quel'Thalas, the kingdom of the high elves, and kills the ranger general Sylvanas, and raises her as a banshee. He then proceeds to destroy the capital of Silvermoon, corrupting their sunwell, and reviving Kel'Thuzad as a Lich. The lich then informs him of the Burning Legion, a vast demonic army that has consumed countless worlds before their own. The Lich King was created to aid the Legion with his undead Scourge, but in truth he wishes for the Legion to be destroyed and to be free of his prison, the Frozen Throne. Kel'Thuzad's true master is actually the Lich King, rather than the Burning Legion. Arthas and Kel'Thuzad open a dimensional portal with Medivh's spellbook so that the Burning Legion can enter the realm of Azeroth. Archimonde is summoned and the Burning Legion begin to destroy Lordaeron. However Archimonde sees Arthas and Kel'Thuzad as useless, and does not use them in his invasion of Azeroth.

After escaping human captivity and fleeing to the shores of Kalimdor with his surviving troops, Orcish warchief Thrall leads his brethren to safety to ensure their survival in Kalimdor. With the aid of the Tauren Chieftain, Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall heads north to Ashenvale Forest to seek the Oracle of Stonetalon Peak, clashing with a human expedition who has also arrived upon Kalimdor for unknown purposes. Meanwhile, Grom Hellscream and the Warsong Clan have been left behind to gather enough lumber to build a permanent Orcish settlement on the isle, and, in cutting down the large amount of trees necessary to do so, anger the native Night Elves and their demigod, Cenarius. In order to defeat Cenarius and his Night Elves, Grom succumbs to demonic corruption by willingly drinking the pit lord Mannoroth's blood, binding his clan and himself to the Legion's control. Back on Stonetalon Peak, Thrall reaches the Oracle to discover that he is actually Medivh, the mysterious Prophet. The Prophet informs Thrall and Archmage Jaina Proudmoore that Grom has succumbed to demonic control, that the two races will need to join forces to save him, and suggests that Grom has a crucial role to play in the unfolding of events. With the humans' help, Thrall fights his way through the ranks of the Warsong Clan and the Legion and is able to capture Grom and purge him of the demons' influence. Grom informs Thrall of Mannoroth's presence in a local canyon, and the two go there to face Mannoroth. Grom manages to slay Mannoroth, freeing the Orcs from the demonic corruption, but dies doing so.

With the coming of the Undead Scourge and Burning Legion as well as the humans and Orcs, Tyrande Whisperwind and her Night Elf Sentinels fight a desperate battle to save their beloved home of Kalimdor from enemies old and new alike. After realizing the situation is beyond the Sentinels alone, Tyrande first reawakens her lover, Malfurion Stormrage, then the Druids of the Talon. While Malfurion awakens the Druids of the Claw, Tyrande, at the protest of Malfurion, frees Malfurion's brother Illidan from the prisons of the Watchers. Tyrande explains that Illidan will be a powerful ally, but Malfurion, still distrusting of his brother, even after thousands of years, protests greatly. Illidan wanders into the forests of Felwood with a band of followers, where he duels with Arthas; as both of them are of similar strength, there is no winner, and Arthas gives Illidan information about the powerful "Skull of Gul'dan". Illidan consumes the skull and uses his new power to kill Tichondrius. Malfurion, seeing that his brother has become a horrific combination of demon and Night Elf, banishes Illidan from Kalimdor. After this, Tyrande and Malfurion join forces with the outlanders Jaina and Thrall to delay the Legion's advance upon the World Tree. Archimonde manages to overrun the allies and begins to drain the power from the Tree. However, Malfurion springs a trap, and Archimonde is destroyed in a colossal blast of energy that shatters the tree of life--but unlike Archimonde, the tree would heal and its roots would once again grow deep. Peace once again comes to Kalimdor as the Burning Legion's forces wither away in defeat and the humans, Orcs, and Night Elves stand victorious.[24]

Sentinels campaign: "Terror of the Tides"

The Night Elf Warden Maiev Shadowsong pursues her former prisoner Illidan Stormrage across Azeroth. Illidan is met by the demonlord Kil'jaeden, who orders him to destroy the Lich King. He gains the allegiance of the Naga, former Night Elves who were mutated by the Well of Eternity beneath the Maelstrom after their city was blasted beneath the sea ten millennia before. The Naga do not stop Maiev, who pursues Illidan from Kalimdor to the Tomb of Sargeras. There, Illidan takes the Eye of Sargeras, a powerful magical artifact, and collapses the tomb in an attempt to kill Maiev.

However, Maiev survives, and gains the assistance of Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind to pursue Illidan all the way to Lordaeron. There she and Tyrande aid a new ally, Prince Kael'thas, against the Undead while Malfurion "communed with the land" to divine Illidan's intent. During the course of the Undead offensive, Tyrande is swept away by a river while defending the retreating elves. Maiev's grudge against Tyrande for releasing Illidan in Reign of Chaos leads her to lie to Malfurion about Tyrande's fate, knowing it would provoke Malfurion to move aggressively against the Naga rather than "waste" time searching for her. Around this time, Illidan attempts to use the newly acquired Eye of Sargeras to melt the icecaps around the Frozen Throne and hence destroy the Lich King. Malfurion and Maiev, mistaking his spell for something malevolent, successfully prevent Illidan from completing his spell.

Following the disruption of Illidan's spell, Maiev's lies regarding Tyrande are exposed. The Stormrage brothers temporarily put aside their disagreement to save Tyrande, their mutual beloved. Malfurion then pardons Illidan and permits him to leave unmolested in spite of Maiev's vehement protests. To prevent further troubles, he upholds Illidan's exile and directs him to leave through a summoned portal. Maiev, consumed by vengeance and hate, ignores the Night Elf leader's decree and chases Illidan.

[edit] Alliance campaign: "Curse of the Blood Elves"

The Alliance campaign follows the adventures of Prince Kael'thas, leader of the Blood Elves, a group of High Elves that survived the invasion of Quel'Thalas by the Scourge. Originally helping the Alliance, the Blood Elves are imprisoned by a racist human Dark Knight, Lord Garithos, for accepting aid from the Naga (after Garithos pulled all of Kael's non-elven troops to the front line) and eventually rescued by Lady Vashj and her Naga. Vashj then takes Kael'thas to Outland, the remnants of the Orc realm Draenor, to meet their master, Illidan, who has been recaptured by Maiev. After fending Maiev off and gaining the allegiance of the native Draenei, Illidan is able to conquer Outland, where he hopes he will be safe from his failure to use the Eye of Sargeras to destroy the Frozen Throne. But his master, the Demonlord Kil'jaeden, catches them nonetheless, and the episode ends with Illidan renewing his vow to destroy the Lich King.

The Human forces in this campaign are very different from the ones used in the multiplayer game. Instead of the full Alliance, only the High Elven units are available, with the addition of a few new units and a Blood Elf hero added to the expansion pack, as well as the Naga forces and a few Lost Ones. The single exception is the first mission of the campaign, which takes place before Garithos recalls Kael's non-elven troops such as human Knights and Footmen, and dwarven Riflemen, Steam tanks and Mortar Teams, all of which are available during that mission.

[edit] Scourge campaign: "Legacy of the Damned"

In the blighted lands of Lordaeron, now known as the Plaguelands, a civil war is taking place within the Undead forces, who are splintering into three major factions: Arthas and Kel'Thuzad, who are loyal to the Lich King; the Forsaken, led by the Banshee Queen Sylvanas Windrunner; and the Dreadlords (Nathrezim), who are still loyal to the Burning Legion, but are unaware of Archimonde's defeat on Mt. Hyjal. The campaign switches between Arthas' journey to Northrend to assist the Lich King, and Sylvanas' war against the Dreadlords for control of the Plaguelands. During this time, Grand Marshall Garithos has assembled some of the last remnants of Lordaeron's army. They retake the Dalaran ruins, but Garithos is then brainwashed by a Dreadlord and saved by Lady Sylvanas. He helps retake the Capital City, but is then betrayed by the Forsaken. Sylvanas emerges as the nominal ruler of the Plaguelands. Meanwhile, Arthas travels to Northrend to defend the Lich King, meeting the subterranean Nerubian race, and eventually defeating Illidan in a one-on-one duel. He then ascends to the Frozen Throne and becomes one with the Lich King.

A few men of Garithos' army escape, with some disappearing into the Alterac Mountains and others joining one of the last human organizations in Lordaeron, The Scarlet Crusade. The Scarlet Crusade is a holy group of humans that fights the undead from their strongholds of Tyr's Hand, Hearthglen, Stratholme, and Brill.

[edit] Horde mini-campaign: "The Founding of Durotar"

The Orc mini-campaign is a departure from the rest of the game. It has features more like an RPG similar to Diablo, featuring a Beastmaster named Rexxar as he helps the Orcs defend and develop their new home of Durotar from various enemies. The Orc mini-campaign was created because the game designers felt that the Orc storyline didn't fit into the main plot of The Frozen Throne. The mini-campaign allowed the designers to move away from standard real-time strategy conventions and explore new level design and gameplay concepts. This campaign was extended by two more chapters through patches of the main game.[1] It also established plot and setting details in preparation for Blizzard's MMORPG World of Warcraft. Completing the other campaigns is not a requirement to play the mini-campaign as the menu immediately allows the player to choose between the campaign missions and the mini-campaign.

The player controls a group of two to four heroes, primarily Rexxar and a Troll Shadow Hunter named Rokhan. The player can also gain permanent control of a Pandaren Brewmaster named Chen Stormstout and Tauren Chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof, and temporary control of Orc Far Seer Drek'thar, Jaina Proudmoore, Orc Blademaster Samuro, and Cairne's son, Baine Bloodhoof. Maps are interconnected, with each one being set up as various areas of Kalimdor, such as the Orc fortress city of Orgrimmar and a Human city on the Theramore Isles.

In the wilds of Kalimdor, Rexxar comes across Mogrin, an Orc messenger who is being attacked by Quillboars. Despite Rexxar's rescue, the Orc is mortally wounded, and passes on his message to Rexxar before he dies. Rexxar completes the Orc's mission, giving the message to Thrall, the warchief of the Horde. He stays in the city of Orgrimmar for a while, performing a number of duties for the Horde to earn his keep. Eventually, he discovers that a force of Humans is planning an invasion of Durotar, led by Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, who has seized control of the Theramore islands from his daughter. Rexxar is sent to gather allies for the Horde, old and new, and leads the assault on the islands to end the threat to the Horde. The Admiral is slain, and the Orcs leave the island in peace, but the truce between the Horde and the Alliance seems to be forever strained by the battle.

I always wondered what happened to those men as WC3 never explained it. Before WC3 was released i actually thought it may be based off of those alliance troops and that would explain the sudden meeting up with other races such as the night elves but I was wrong.. would have made a interesting game though.

However I am sad to learn that beyond the dark portals ending is ignored to a major degree.... it takes the dramatic effect right out of the games ending. First WC3 failed to answer the question and now WoW counterdicts the ending... I'm losing so much faith in blizzard Sad

Hmm...

Planescape: Torment, Baldurs Gate 2 and Fallout 2 would be the easy choices.

Then the less obvious ones: Dragon Knight 3&4, Shin Megami Tensei, Myth 1&2, Divi-Dead, Harvester...

It's actually quite hard to rate the story of computer games, as quite often there are several other factors contributing to the immersiveness. Even Diablo has quite nice story, when you think about it - unfortunately the game around the story doesn't utilize it further than getting an excuse for the hack 'n slash.

And a lot of old titles hold a special place in my heart - but to be totally objective, their stories were quite bland and cliche. Of course for a 12 year old Warcraft 1 had totally different effect than it'd have on a grown up who has read his fantasy novels.

But back those days it was easier to use your own imagination to fill in the blanks. Thats why games like Syndicate, X-Com or WC1 were immersive experiences for me back the day - they provided unique setting and your imagination did the rest of the work.
