I just signed up for a diamond account with giganews. I've never had a usenet account before, and i have no idea exactly how it works. The reason i picked giganews was because they had the highest retention (i assume that's a good thing). So i have some questions. What exactly is retention? Is it just a measure of how long files stay on the server? Does that mean that once someone uploads something, it stays there for 200 days (that's how much retentino giganews has)? What about old stuff? Is it possible to find stuff that was released more than 200 days ago? Like say i wanted to download a movie that's a few years old, or a really old game? Do people upload old stuff, or is it only the latest stuff?

- yes, you're quite right, uploaded stuff stays for 200 days
- no, you can't retrieve an upload older then 200 days
- stuff gets reposted on regular basis and also you can try to request something. but torrents are still better if you need to find something old quickly
- there are special groups for old stuff like gmaes.old etc.
- use usenet search egnines to check availability instead of looking "manually *CANNOT POST LINKS**

Ok, i've managed to start downloading stuff. I am downloading Terminator 1 in 1080p resolution. It is about 8 gb in compressed rar files. I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was a way to extract the files while you were downloading them, so you don't have to have twice as much space free in order to extract it. Is this possible, because otherwise i'll need 16 gb just to download and extract it, and i currently only have 14gb free.

But is it possible or not? To extract a file while it's downloading so you don't have to have twice as much space?

well depends on the speed of things. If rar.32 isn't done downloading by the time its turn to be extracted comes up, winrar usually says hey, I have errors cause you sux and doesn't offer to continue or retry etc. Also I think their are still technically "in use" while extracting till it's done.
In all honesty...you can get a 500GB SATA from WD for 99.99 (UNDER 100 DOLLARS!!!) If you have teh money to pay for Giganews you can totally afford a new HD lol.

Serben, sometimes RARs need to be repaired (with PAR files included with the posts). You need to have a complete set of rars before you can repair anything.

That's why I love easynews.com - everythin's autoPARed and autounRARed, you just grab the AVIs and MP3s you want. AutounRAR doesn't work for 4gb+ files tho, but autoPAR is still an awesome feature.

This is so fucking awesome! No matter what i download, i always get maxed speeds! And the giganews accelerator app that all giganews members get has automatic encryption and all kinds of other shit so nobody can see what i'm downloading! I've downloaded over 10 gb today. That's probably more than i've ever downloaded in a single day. First i downloaded terminator 1 in 1080p resolution, and now i'm downloading the 7th episode of planet earth, also in 1080p. I am NEVER going back to fucking torrents (well that's actually not true. I have an account (and a pretty decent ratio) at a private porn site called puretna.com That site fucking rules. They have everything there. But other than that, no fucking torrents! Usenet for the fucking win!!!!!!! But with so much stuff to download, i can't choose! Can someone recomend some good movies that are avaliable in HD. The only thing i've ever watched in HD so far is the first 7 episodes of planet earth (in 720p) which i downloaded from a slow as shit torrent. But now that i have unlimited leeching abilities and maxed speeds, i never have to go back to shitty rips, ever! So i want to make the most of it and download as much HD stuff as possible. Any recomendations?

Things that are on top of my head, and are great in HD:
Man on Fire
Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy - ESIR releases
Bourne Trilogy
Casino Royale
Into the Blue ( Gotta <3 Alba in HD )
Ratatuille (or however spelled)
Cars
Batman Begins
Children of Men
Sunshine
The Hunt for the Red October
Blade Runner
That's it for now...

Yeah sure, Hellboy is amazing in HD! It was one of the first movies I saw in HD (back when those were only composed from HDTV caps) and it blew me away! King Kong is also great, but because of all the clarity of HD, you kinda see what's real and what's fake CGI, which kinda ruined it for me. SD DVD didn't have such problems.

And, for the older releases, H2, iLL, LsE (which are now part of CtrlHD) and NWO and maby others. For really old school releases, THOR is actually ESiR's old name.

Does it really matter what group's version of a movie you download? Isn't 1080 still 1080, regardless of what group made it? Or does the quality actually vary from group to group? How noticeable is it? I only have a 17 inch CRT screen that i bought like 6 years ago, so will the difference be noticable on such a small screen?
