Well I've finally become 'hip' with a IPOD Nano 3G.

I then invested in a bluetooth transmitter / receiver (so the IPOD can sleep in my gym bag and not get knocked around)...

Unfortunately the earphones are the mushroom sort, the ones that tend to stick right in your ear and for me it feel's uncomfortable; I'm sure it's a personal thing.

Where as the IPOD default earphones feel a lot better to wear. Seeing as the bluetooth receiver has a handy headphone jack so I'm not bound to using the Panasonic mushroom sort... I was wondering has anyone got any preferences to comfortable earphones (ones that don't have to meet the ear drum)???

that's funny, I have the exact opposite preference than you. I love the newer style of earbuds with the soft plastic caps. I can't even wear the hard plastic earbuds they hurt so much.

I have these ones, most comfortable I've ever worn (Skull Candy Smokin' Buds)...

asus z170-A || core i5-6600K || geforce gtx 970 4gb || 16gb ddr4 ram || win10 || 1080p led samsung 27"

I own a pair of MDR EX 71. Very comfortable, you feel like you don't have anything inside your ear at all. But the sound quality is quite bad. They create an extreme amount of bass that doesn't allow you to hear details in higher frequencies.
I don't recommend them for normal use, but if you're into gangster rap songs that consist mainly of bass, you might as well love them.

I own the AKG518DJ Headphones, they're bigger than any earbud or in-ear solution, but the Outputquality is so much better than some cheap buds.

Dont ever, ever buy some Skullcandy trash. These are the worst headphones ever made, period. Go for quality-ones, like Sennheiser, AKG, JBL, Shure etc.
