According to a topic in a xbox360 FW irc channel benq ixtreme 1.41 is in testing the biggest fixes are :
Read Sector fix
8x firmware dashboard speed fix.

so can we stop updating, once the console gets banned???

ofc you can.
those fixes (for whatever looking at the latest rlses) are only needed to "secure" your xbox live online gaming (ban prevention).
you can play your copyed games even with the xtreme rlses or whatever

how do u get gameupdates if ur console is banned?

Your console will be updated when you try to play MX Vs ATV. Although, it's not the one that will allow playback of divx.

There is some site where you can download an image of the updates, burn to disc and put in your X360 so it updates even if you're banned from live.

You can get dashboard updates from the Microsoft homepage or wait for a game that contains the update. But you can not get new codecs (like DivX).
Your console will know what a DivX file is, but it will need the codec from Xbox Live to play it.

He asked about game updates! The answer is you simply can't get them anymore if you are banned. That's the only truly annoying thing about the bans imo.

one question for you guys..
my 360's hitachi drive is currently modded with c4ever xtrm 2.4 firmware. i only play games offline, don't go on live at all. do i have to update my dvdrom's firmware to ixtreme 1.4?

Nah, I am sticking with an older firmware. The iXtreme firmwares makes extra checks (atleast on Samsung) that causes some older backups to not work because they are not Live-safe.

But if you are not banned and want to play some of those backups on LIVE, then I would strongly recomend updating.... I keep all my firmware up to date and have not had any problems since I flashed a year ago...

Ive read before that with the original Xbox bans MS was detecting firmware changes. As I understood it, as long as your firmware didnt change on your unit from the time you logged into LIVE you were going to be ok. Starting to sound like the same thing here dont you think? Im still not banned, have been using an older firmware and my firmware hasnt changed since I first logged in to LIVE. Coincidence? If it aint broke, dont fix it.

you are referring to the marriage theory. thats totally different with the current 360 modded consoles. in the past microsoft was back tracking the eeprom - hdd key combination. when something changed they banned you. thats the reason why you had to upgrade your hdd before going on live.
recent 360 bannings are totally different.
