Sorry if this has already been made but I couldn't find it through search, was late at night so couldn't really be bothered/had the time to go through 10 pages, and would rather just get straight to the point, what happens: I install Vista Ultimate permanently activated onto my computer which has all new parts:

AMD 6400+ Black Edition
Leadtek 8800GT 512MB
2GB Corsair XMS2 5-5-5-18 2X1GB
Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Rev. 2 (A one I've had trouble with in the past, IDE failure)
Coolermaster 550W PSU

I recently bought an Abit AN-M2HD but that doesn't even start up let alone go into BIOS so when the technician from the store I bought it from gets back I'm going to send it back which will be in a week or 2, so since I converted to all SATA (as most mobos only have 1 IDE connector) I thought it would be OK as IDE was the only problem, so got Vista installed, it booted up for the first time perfectly then as soon as I got to desktop it rebooted itself then went into Error 17 which from various Google searches turned out that it has something to do with Ubuntu which I have never installed on 1 of my computers so I really am at a loss.
Thanks in advance.

What was wrong with the IDE channel previously? You've flashed to the latest BIOS revision? Is your BIOS detecting the HDD(s) capacity correctly?

How is your BIOS configured for SATA access (native IDE, legacy IDE, AHCI or RAID)? I assume your boot device order is correct. Do you only have a single SATA HDD? If more than one, have you tried to unplug all drives save for the target drive where Vista is to be installed on and then installed ? Because of your "IDE trouble", is your DVDRW an IDE or SATA drive?

Just to recap, this is a fresh, clean install of a legal / illegal Vista onto a drive you've formatted solely for Vista's use? The target HDD is brand new? I mean it's not an older drive that perhaps someone previously put linux onto Smile Of course, whilst it may just be a mbr problem, the thing is that perhaps the motherboard itself is faulty.

I'm sure Vista would have detected the controller chipset, you didn't have to supply a driver via F6 @ install stage, did you? All your install attempts have all resulted in Error 17? So machine boots, and gives a Lilo/GRUB boot error something along the lines of "error 17, cannot mount selected partition"? Any more error text shown?

Lastly, have you tried booting from the Vista DVD, selecting repair, let it detect your failed Vista install, try option to repair startup and if that fails, choose option to manually repair via console and in your CMD line type bootrec -fixmbr followed by bootrec -fixboot and rebooting?

Well, the problem was my computer kept on freezing at random times so I sent it back to the shop, when I got it back, I tried to boot the comp but got "Cannot find NTRD" or something along those lines, put my 2 IDE drives in my external enclosure and checked them on my dads computer which has had no troubles at all, and they were apparently blank, I didn't want to reformat them in the chance that I might be able to get the data back but after a while of failed attempts I decided I'd just install Vista, but upton installation it didn't detect my 2 IDE hdds even though my dads did, but they had to be formatted, so I decided to just buy another, larger Sata (I had a 320GB and a 400GB to begin with, all bought this year and only been used by me), transfer the data from the 400GB to it, then the data from the 320GB to the 400GB and use the 320GB as the system, when I got to installing Vista I deleted the partition on the 320GB and started a fresh 1, installed perfectly, then got to desktop, it rebooted and came up with GRUB error 17, can't remember the "cannot mount selected partition" part though, I then deleted the partition, start again, same exact error, after that I just wanted to get the computer working if not temporarily, tried to install XP, got past the partitioning, then when it went to installing the OS I got a black screen so could not proceed.

A friend mentioned that the freezing might be because of the memory controller on the motherboard therefore making it useless so I bought an Abit that is DOA as far as I can see, but someone on NFOrce said that the memory controller is in the dual core processor, I'm using an IDE DVD-RW, ASUS DRW-1814BL with Light Scribe, the IDE 0 was the one with trouble as far as I could see, Vista installed fine. Oh and Vista is illegal, its Windows Vista Corperate or something a Dell OEM that my friend downloaded but my Windows XP was legit, well, I bought it legit but after I had some troubles and had to reinstall it, it was apparently deemed not genuine, so after that I deiced if Bill wants a war, I've got the napalm.

P.S. Sorry for the length, lawl

EDIT: I have never used any Unix OS thats why I found it weird that GRUB was mentioned on the error :\

EDIT2: I do notice upon booting it says "Memory Controller NA" but there hasn't been any freezing, if there is then I guess I will update the BIOS but apart from that theres only CPU list updates or something along those lines for the BIOS so I don't see much point.

Check your memory with memtest86+
Check your SATA cables.

Unplug all hard drives except the one where you will repair (using DVD) or reinstall your Vista setup.

I tried to repair but could only find memory test (I'm assuming thats what it is, I never really had trouble and had to resort to it but it just kept repeating the test so I'm assuming it was), and I keep moving the SATA hard drives out and about so the cables are bound to of been removed and replugged but I will try what you have suggested again.

As already said, if you've disconnected everything except the target HDD and DVDRW drive and tried the bootable automated repair feature of Vista and it's failed then access the advanced repair features available via the Sytem Recovery Options dialogue box and select Command Prompt. If your unsure of how to access the basic and advanced repair features of Vista, a quick guide can be found here.

So from the CMD prompt, enter:

bootrec -fixmbr
bootrec -fixboot

Restart, remove Vista DVD. Let us know how it goes Smile

OK so I downloaded Vista myself instead of getting a copy off my friend which he burnt a while ago just to see if it was just because of his disc being scratched or something (which I know was not likely the problem but I'd rather it be that) but it wouldn't let me install, XP wanted in, so it actually works now, on the dark side though whenever I reset my computer doesnt go through a POST it just stops but since this is really just temporary I'm not letting it get on my nerves too much, since XP is working fine I decided to dual boot Vista, could I use Partition Magic to half my system drive for Vista or would it not work? (I are noob when it comes to this sort of thing Razz)

EDIT: Thanks for the help all, ManMountain that command worked a charm, Vista is now working, just got to get what I'm assuming is the network drivers working and I should be fine, my ADSL Modem is not responding but I used it in my dads comp fine (This is in XP) :\

EDIT2: Go into Vista, 5 seconds later BSOD, go for memory test, go off to work, come back, comps pretty much stuffed and needs to be restarted (Blank screen and the monitors light is red asif off, I guess I'll just either reinstall Vista or wait for the comp shop to open so I can get the new mobo fixed sos I won't need to install everything again.
