NASA predicts that the Sun will also reverse its own magnetic poles during 2012 as result of reaching the end of the current 11-year sunspot

And all other "dooms day" predictions. I know that the Mayan calender ends 2012...but, so what! ?

Well, does the sun pole reversing has any effects on our climate? Confused

I guess not, it does so every now and then, check this:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast15feb_1.htm

EDIT: Cool, scientists also believe that's the Earth's field also flips

Quote:
Earth’s magnetic field also flips, but with less regularity. Consecutive reversals are spaced 5 thousand years to 50 million years apart. The last reversal happened 740,000 years ago. Some researchers think our planet is overdue for another one, but nobody knows exactly when the next reversal might occur.

Now that's something we wouldn't be seeing everyday, regular navigation gone to hell

It may not just mess up the navigation, it can mess up the whole climate. Antarctica could turn into a desert, and Europe could turn into a tropical area.(For example)

Antarctica already is a desert. Climate is primarily related to the the position of the surface of the earth relative to the sun and the tilt of the axis. The magnetic field only has a minor cumulative effect, due to it's deflection of cosmic radiation and ionized particles. We're talking about a reversal here, not a lack of a magnetic field entirely.

I'm assuming you came up with this theory yourself because it is completely flawed. Notice how The Arctic and Antarctica are both frozen deserts and the northern temperate zone has a southern counterpart. Hard climate variations have a dispersed radial symmetry, a reversal would not affect this at all.

Navigation and communications would be affected but seeing as a reversal event is a gradual process taking up to thousands of years we would have time to adapt.

People just love to exaggerate when it comes to science, so much misinformation out there.

LOL, I have been known to go on a drunken science ramble now and then. As long as you're not condescending or acting like you're giving a lecture people are surprisingly receptive. Gotta know when to shut up though! Razz

Yeah, actually the atmosphere angle affecting on the temperature makes much more sense than magnetism. Though I think I saw that magnetism can radically change climate on discovery channel one time. Though I can't really recall.

Unless it's ridiculous I don't really care about scientific inconsistencies when it comes to films, if it's for the sake of a good narrative who cares. Suspension of disbelief is vital to enjoying cinema. Very Happy

Jenni likes to correct grammar and spelling, as long as it's legible it doesn't bother me. Razz

Oh yeah I posted in that! Embarassed

Personally I think that arguing over wounds to a hero character is absurd. Since the dawn of cinema heroes have been recovering from wounds in record time. It's like arguing about how falling in toxic waste can give you superpowers. Laughing

Naaa, pretty spooky stuff...but who knows. I just find it interesting how we get hung up on dates and stuff. Means nothing in a cosmic perspective. There have been predictions like this for thousands of years. I guess Nostradamus is a rock star cause no one really figured what the hell he was talking about. The key (if there is one) has never really been found to encrypt hes quatrains, at least as far as I know.

Theres always an apocalypse round the corner, I can't believe anyone takes this crap seriously.

I guess some people just latch onto anything that makes them feel the future holds significance for them. It's the same shit with religion and all the life after death scenarios.
