|
 |
Quote: | The once-rumored R680 will take advantage of a smaller chip design to fit two cores in one unit.
Now that dual-core processors have become the status quo for CPUs, it looks like graphics processors are taking a step in the same direction. AMD’s latest GPU, the R680, will pack two processors onto one board.
News of the new GPU came from the senior vice president and general manager of AMD's graphics group, Rick Bergman, in his presentation on Thursday's 2007 Financial Analyst Day (PDF). The R680 will use the same compact 55-namometer design as its predecessor, the RV670, but doubled up. According to DailyTech, two other new cores, the RV620 and RV635, were also announced, but they will merely be scaled down 55-nanometer variants of the RV610 and RV630, respectively.
AMD plans to launch boards with the new GPUs next month. Despite have two processors from the get-go, R680-based boards should still be CrossFireX-enabled, allowing builders to stack two or more cards in a system. |
Like i said it will happen. Dual core gpu FTW.

Depends on how they implement it. If they do it like sli where each application has to be written to take advantage of the multiple core then it will fail. Reason being that not all developers are going to take the effort required.
If on the other hand, the gpu divides up the processing between the two cores itself then it will be a good solution.

Dual core isnt dual gpu. Its ONE gpu with 2 CORES. Same as CPU that has 2 cores.

well they can barely optimize or code with one cored gpu so i wonder how this will work at the end
and they really need to hire someone with brains to develope decent and stable drivers which will not require regular update, otherwise this shit get's very old, issue -> reinstall whole shibam all over again
after all sli/crossfire was/is just useless pos

nice idea, probably lousy execution and a bad/extremely late release date.

I was reading that instead of 2 major upgrade cards a year, they are going to force you to buy more low end cards to get high end results. Up to 4 gpus. If this is true, and with the multi gpu track record so far, this is not looking good at all. Only thing I can get from this is a money grab, and a true setback PC gaming. And this to me only shows coercion between Nvidia and ATI to be lazy about making better products. They want to increase the shelf life of there old shit, and sell a lot more of them. Nothing more.

Wow I just read that AMD is not gonna bring out any new generation of GPUs in 2008.
The next generation is coming 2009, while this dual core gpu will apparently be the fastest card AMD can offer until then.
They're so gonna get owned by the geforce 9 series.. ouch.

Don't expect the 9 series anytime soon though. Nvidia will be trying to sell it's G92 based cards first if they can make enough of them. At the moment it looks as if AMD is the only top-end card (with dx10) on the market. So much so that demand has pushed the price of the 3800 cards above the msrp. But aleast you can buy them which is not what one could say about nvidia.
I think the dual-core gpu will come out about the same time as nvidia's 9 series. Performance will suck (based on amd's phenom performance) and nvidia will have the top card again. | Mid Feb is the target date sorta, could well be end of Feb, but I am sure they will try to time it with Vista SP1. Now 2 months I can wait

If SLI didnt suck such donkey nuts Nvidia would be amazing. As it stands, you can get better bang for your buck with AMD cards...

I remember the 3DFX Voodoo cards having Dual GPU and even Quad GPU... Nothing new or exciting... Although would be more beneficial now since Software Companies dont give a crap about how they program, just as long as it works... Owell...
