I have just taken part in an horrible example of teamwork ... read ahead ... i would put my hands in my hair if only i had enough of it Smile

Work to be done: for say 30 articles, starting from a xls sheet with description of the goods and quantities, the objective was obtaining a total weight.

What i did: adding a weight column, making a formula weight x quantities for every row and another one for the total in the bottom. Total time 3 minutes.

What i had to see: 3 persons (age 30/40/50, all with respectable positions in the company, all of them with said very good [!!!] knowledge of computers and types of job that need at least a *really* basic knowledge of it), arguing for nearly 30 minutes (they were in the room from from nearly 20 when i was called inside) about how to resolve the problem at best.
They were evaluating the possibility of using a program to make load plans to compute the total weight, another one was terribly worried about the necessity of re-insert manually all of the weights and thinking about how to made it "automatically" (for 30 lines !), but the really best one was from a really expert dude with knowledge even in the drawing field ... and when i heard that i was really really near the point of laughing in the face of all of them ... using autocad to represent via squares the weight, inserting many squares as the quantities, and calculating the total area of all of them to obtain the total weight !!!

OMG !!! I couldn't believe in my hears ! A total (adding the time with me inside the room) of nearly 30 minutes with 3(+1) persons to make such a difficult operation ! And with such idiot additional problems and proposed solution !!!
OMFG !!! I cannot yet believe it and i cannot believe i resisted the urge to laugh in their face !!!

And thinking that 2 out of 3 of these geniuses take roughly double my monthly pay ... I don't know if i should laugh of cry !!!

AARRGGHH

i guess those people usually solve problems for more than just 30 articles and where bound to think about solutions for more than a one-time use. But if it was already in an excel sheet, i would have done the same as you (if i had to do the task several times a week / month i would think about using perl though). And i actually like the idea of computing the total area, perhaps with a nice cracktro-like app with 2d/3d animation and midi-music, showing the progress of the computation with dancing penguins that stockpile the squares Very Happy

@ lutzifer : tnx 4 your support Smile anyway i agree with you, if there is a certain degree of repetition in any kind of work, then it could be wise to invest time in finding a way to optimize and shorten the time needed. i'm remember 3 years ago when i had to find a serie of calculations for my work, based on tables and the like, i tried in all the conventional ways (excel, etc) but finally i decided to learn the necessary vb to make a little program that suited my needs. but that's a work that i make practically everyday so it was worth the time !
not in the absurd case i had the misfortune of seeing !!!

about your comment on computing the total area ... ahah yups ! we could make money !!! you do the programming and i'll take only the rights for the idea Smile we could sell such a ehm useful program maybe as an external autocad application, maybe even standalone ?, at ? 4-500 euro ?
with an adequate publicity we should have no problems in finding say a couple of thousands of hi-level managers like the ones i have here near me to sell such a great program that do in such a wonderful and innovative way ... ehm ... uhm ... multiplications and sums Smile Smile Smile when are we starting the business ???

@ myself : hey dude it's time to change drugs Smile and give some to lutzifer too Smile Smile Smile

@ deelix : ahah Smile naa anyway i cannot call myself a programmer, too little knowledge in that field. maybe one day when i'll have more free time ...

Mr.I you should understand that people working with one tool/program after a while will think its the best tool of all and they can do McGuywer stuff with it

@ lutzifer : lol

@ bluesyz : yes i can understand that and believe me or not i'm not the type of guy that likes to pass his time making harsh critics to others (i mean not you ! but in this case my colleagues), but ... what you say it's exactly the opposite of what my bunch of colleagues do and have done.
I mean, since the most used program they use is ms office (i would say at 95% of their time, since non of them has autocad or the load plan software i mentioned), and specifically word and excel, why in the hell in 3 (three) brains together they didn't even think of using the most used programs to make a couple of sums and multiplications ???
We are not speaking objectively of anything complex ! And consider that they all consider themselves quite good in the computer / technology field ! And consider finally that at least two of them occupy two of the top positions in my company and they like to be called "doctors" (i mean the prefix some like to use for having finished the university).
I have my answer to all of this but i'll keep it for myself otherwise i could seem too harsh and critic with others Smile
