That SUV is a "hybrid" (or the american equivalent of one), has a tiny electric motor next to the standart gigantanormous V8 and is considered environmentally friendly

Was on the Top Gear news a few weeks ago. They should put a 9v battery in a Hummvee and call it a hybrid Smile

the suv in the picture is supposed to be a hybrid. But it seems that americans can't understand what hybrids are designed for...

Well my friend has a new Hybrid full size truck and its is amazing at how fuel efficient it is. I bet he gets double the gas mileage on the highway.

So by many of your reasoning, small vehicles should be the only hybrids? Sounds quite dumb and unrealistic to me.

Presently you cant stop people and manufacturers from making large vehicles right? So why not try and make them as fuel efficient as possible.

And what does supposed to be a hybrid mean? If its gas and electric, its a hybrid. No one is saying its a green vehicle, or a smart car are they.

Seem that the OP doesn't understand what a hybrid is or means, and is using this thread to attack Americans and show his lack of understanding of the human language.

Hybrid does not mean eco, or green. It means two technologies, used together to reduce....yes keyword is "reduce" fuel consumption .

Bigperm is right, although consider that while these vehicles are better than their conventional counterparts, there are still many, many, many, many, many people who drive vehicles far larger than they need.

This paper is pretty good: How much fuel do you save with a hybrid SUV?
www.bridge.ubc.ca/pdf/press_releases/Reynolds_physorg07.pdf

Quote:
“In our analysis, we found that changes in weight and power affect HEVs differently than ICEVs [conventional internal combustion engine vehicles],” Reynolds explained. “For example, we found that added weight doesn’t matter as much for hybrids as for conventional vehicles, a comparison that reinforces the fuel benefits of hybrid technology.”

“Initially, we were somewhat surprised to find that increased weight in hybrids is not as bad for fuel consumption as it is for ICEVs,” Reynolds said. “When we looked into this, however, we found that it can be quite easily explained by the regenerative braking (and other features) that HEVs have. Hybrids are able to recapture inertial energy that would otherwise be ‘wasted’ in a conventional vehicle. It's an important finding because the general trend has been toward heavier vehicles for all technology types, and HEVs do better than ICEVs.”

Compared with some of the larger HEVs, conventional vehicles could still have the upper hand in fuel savings. For instance, a small or regular-sized conventional car (e.g. Toyota Yaris) would give you much better mileage than a hybrid SUV (e.g. Toyota Highlander hybrid) or luxury car (e.g. Honda Accord hybrid).
