Being an fps has nothing to do with storyline. It just seems to me that people like playing a long, involved game (aka rpgs) thus "evolving" the storyline. But IMO ill take gameplay over storyline any day b/c thats what games are about (to me anyways) ^_^

I'm not a half life 2 fanboy at all, in fact I didnt evne like half life and counterstrike much. But I just bought the bronze edition at steam, CS:Source downing now =)

there were indeed some good stories in fps games. Mafia and the Max Pain series comes to my mind first. There are numerous other games that had gems for a story, but often too much action inbetween so that the story wasnt advanced with the right pacing or felt like it was only there for having a reason to shoot stuff...
In the last years the immersiveness/good story-telling of fps has changed for the better in my opinion, although you get the high-paced action-packed shooters still. Which can be fun also, like serious sam and painkiller have shown
But everybody to his own taste. If you dislike fps or are one of those cutscene skippers and speed-runners then you wont even noticed all the story elements
I love it when game writers make me care about the characters, but i also hate it if they kill of people in a story for no apparent reasons, like at the end of unreal2 for example. Its not easy to write a good script, even harder in games actually, and there is always room for improvement
ah, this rant leaves me wanting hl2 in my hands even more... damn you, stupid ranting brain of mine, damn you to hell

Max Payne (1 and 2) had really SUPERB stories (especially two!).
Indeed Mafia too, loved it.
Red Faction had quite a well-thought out story too.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein's story wasn't cinematic or anything, but quite fun to experience aswell.

Could be possible as they cracked CS:S. I don't think there will be any problem with HL2. But if you are that anticipated about the game, go and buy the damn thing and do not warez it.

Well if a game has a great story then it makes it even better. A great story isn't required for the game to be good (Far Cry) but it does help a lot. Some of my favorite games of the past years (Mafia, Max Payne 1 & 2) or of all time (Metal Gear Solid) have had great stories and really made them great.
