|
 |
my friend still wants a prebuilt.. not gonna argue with him or anything... anyway he sent me a site of a pc building company to look at and let him know what to get and if the place is good... am i missing something?? this site offers
quad core QX9650 (4x 3.0GHz/12MB L2 Cache/1333FSB
2gb ram
SLI 8800gt
320gb hdd
x-fi soundcard
5.1 speakers etc... $2260.00
WHAT?!
unless im missing something, you cant even buy all that shit in individual components for that price... changing to 2x 8800 gtx ultras bumps up the price to just over $3000 bucks USD...
http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm
is this a scam or some shit? im starting to think prebuilts arent such a bad idea...

I dunno, I'm pretty sure it's possible to put together that system for less than 2260$.
The biggest problem is probably the outrageous CPU which seems to go for like 1000-1200$.
In euros I was able to put together that system for about 1700-1800€, so it shouldn't be too hard getting that stuff below 2000$ as we in europe usually seem to pay the same amount of € for hardware that people in the US have to pay in $.
The price still seems pretty good though.

Throw in a descent PSU and a GOOD! case + a DVD RW burner or a Blue ray or somet...
And again, I would wait to buy me any new gracard/s until the release of the 9800GTX in mid Feb.

i can get same parts for the about same price individually from local shop
maybe +/- 150-200 euro, but if something happens i wouldn't have to send or shit like that
so it's pretty much possible

yeah i had another look when i was a bit calmer and thought it through a bit... i realise living in NZ means parts are a bit more expensive, and combine that with 1 or 2 buying errors i made (wont make again), in total my pc might have cost about 700 bucks more than what that site would make it for, so i think i feel a lot better about my pc now...
its just the initial shock when i wasnt thinking things out too clearly..
POINT IS, ive told my friend to buy from there and i think he'll be happy with his purchase - do you think its wise i recommended he get a dual core instead of a quad? i basically told him that even though i have a quad, i use it for more than just gaming, where as he probably wont, so a dual will give him better performance in games, but it was up to him as to whether he wanted to take a risk and hope quad core gaming becomes huge within the next year or 2, which i kinda doubt....

hes a friend in the US, so it works out quite well
but my previous question, was i, or wasnt i, right to suggest he go dual instead of quad given that he mainly wants it for gaming?

The only reason I went quad was the sweet deal I got on it, otherwise Dual is the way to go, unless you have money to blow. It's a gimmick at the moment that won't be optimized for a couple years.
Good decision on the recommendation. I don't know about waiting til feb on the 9800 series... mostly because they'll be serious enthusiast cards, running around $600ish I'd guess on release. Never worth the money.

depends. if he's one of those guys who likes to buy a pc maybe only every 5 years or something, then go for a quad, because in 2 or 3 years, quad core will be standard.
by then, most games will be faster on a quad with 2.4 ghz than a dual core of 2.6 or even 3 ghz.
take a look at UT3 for example, a 2.4ghz quad core is already faster than a 2.66ghz dual core and that's only the beginning.
so yeah, if he's going to upgrade the CPU again in a year or two, go for a dual core.
he can just upgrade to a quad or octo core once they are more useful in gaming.
if he wants to keep the PC for a long time, go for quad.
a 2.4 ghz core 2 quad is still fast enough for any game nowadays and getting a 3ghz dual core (which costs about the same) probably won't noticeably speed most games up.

this is basically the email i shot off to him yesterday
"but you might want to concider a dual core processor instead of a quad. not many games use 4 cores yet, and i dont know how long it'll be until they do... crysis does, but it uses 2 mainly and 2
in a very small amount, but basically in most games youll probably see better results using the dual core. like i said, its up to jew, you can either go for whats best now, or you can take a guess that quad core gaming is really going to take off, and you want to be ready for those games a few yeas down the road..."

What's the difference when using quad or dual (usually the more the merrier)? If game uses only dual for gaming, and not using all capacities, that's fine, but what's the main difference? Will games work slower on quad or on dual?

a game utilizing all 4 cores of a quad core cpu will be faster on a 2.4 ghz quad core than on a 3 ghz dual core.
however, a game that can only utilize 2 cores of a dual core will leave much of the quad core's potential power unused, so a 2.4ghz quad core will be noticeably slower than a 3ghz dual core.
Now the main consideration here is the price. You can get a 3ghz dual core for the price of a 2.4ghz quad core, so in games that use only 2 cores you will get better performance for the price if you get a dual core cpu.
in a game that uses only 2 cores, a 2.4ghz quad core and a 2.4 ghz dual core will give the same performance, but a 2.4 ghz quad core is more expensive than a 2.4ghz dual core.
