Okay so i build this rig for a buddy of mine using an Antec Nine Hundred case. The soundcard is a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer. Now this card has a connector so you can hook up the front audio jacks that the case has directly to the soundcard. Usually this only works with onboard sound, but i thought, the connecter is there, why not use it. So now the cable coming from the front panel has two connectors on it, one says HD Audio and the other says AC97, both have identical pinlayout. So i looked up the specs for the soundcard online and Creative says the soundcard connector for the front panel audio is Intel HD Audio conform.
Unfortunately i had to find out that the machine didn't wanna boot as long as i had the front panel audio hooked up to the soundcard, no matter if i used the HD audio or the AC97, so i googled a bit and found the following

The key sentence here being "This header follows the standart 2x5pin Intel HD Audio conform layout. It is NOT compatible with AC97 or Intel-compatible HD Front Panel Audio"
Now my fucking question is: Whats the fucking difference between Intel HD Audio and Intel-compatible HD Audio??? If it's supposed to be compatible, then there shouldn't be any fucking difference, right? I dont get it. Can anyone explain this to me? Also, can i change some pins to make the front panel connector a real Intel HD one? Or am i totally screwed here and stuck with crawling under the desk?

maybe the difference is that one is specifically intel standard, and another is a DIFFERENT standard, which is also capable of using the intel standard? i think thats how i understand it...
it actually sounds like the problem is the case not the card...
the case is looking for a board which uses a standard which ISNT hd audio, but rather a standard which is NOT hdaudio, but is capable of handling it
the xtremegamer DOES use hdaudio, but the header wont handle hdaudio - it wants another standard... yuck, i mean at the moment it kinda makes sense to me, but the more i think about it, the more confused im sure im gonna get.
i just ordered this card... ill post back some time in the future and let you know if my front panel accepts it  im a bit worried now...

heh actually that front panel thing was the last thing i expected to get trouble from building this pc. You just think Right, that goes in there and that's that. Guess i was expecting too much there...

i wish i was the ruler of the world. everything would go so much smoother... everything would be compatable with everything, and if someone stepped out of line and tried to create a new format or standard, id ship em off to the salt mines or something
yep there'd be the chiv audio standard... chiv video standard... chivx9 (id NEVER have made soemthing as useless as chivx10...), hd chiv, and the chivstation.
just to clarify, youve had the header working with your mobo's onboard sound right? dig out the manual and see if the mobo specifies hd compatable or if it is in fact proper intel stndard... it may even be that the card is faulty or something... ?

A quick google on the case + card name shows that the combination does work although the rear jacks end up being disabled. So it could be a machine specific problem i.e. card, header, cable, etc.
And since there's not many other possibilities, I have to ask. Have you disabled on-board audio?

read jacks disabled? is that a CARD problem or one caused by that particular case... thats pretty fucking retarded if the card simply refuses to allow both outputs to be used at the same time... i know its a budget card, but come on!

ok well i can officially tell you that its not a problem with the card... my xtremegamer card arrived yesterday, installed it today, and after much swearing at what i honestly believe are the SHITTIEST driver installations ever invented, the card is working - i hooked up my hd audio header to the soundcard and get autio from my cases front port, in addition i also get audio simulateously from the front and rear connections (i was worried about swingmans statement, but if its true it appears to only be for certain cases )
the creative drivers honestly make me appreciate nvidia and just how great they are... never had problems installing a card or updating drivers from nvidia, but when i installed this soundcard, i downloaded the latest drivers (doesnt that make sense?) to install the card with, but the installer kept crashing explorer or some shit... pathetic, so i just gave up and used the install cd that came with it, and it installed fine... fucking retarded... ugh...
anyway, in summary, card works, headers work, problem is the case  - ill need to wait for my new headphones to really see how the card performs though
