Microsoft revealed some changes to their Windows Genuine Advantage protection scheme for Windows Vista which determines if the copy of Windows Vista is legit. A non validated Windows Vista operating system would reduce its functionality after 30 days and make only security updates available for that system.

Service Pack 1 will change that behavior. On the good side the functionality will remain and will no longer be reduced, on the bad site this will be compensated by nag screens known from shareware programs that nag the user to buy the application after x days. Windows will use those nag screens and have a 15 second timer before the user will be able to click on Activate Later to continue his work.

I will just stay on update disabled, until others find out what all this is about and start to give some feedback, no need to rush. The reduced functionality thingy is gone and this is already a good point, the déjà vu nag screens crap may not affect anything on OEM emulated setups, time will tell. Smile

Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of AutoPatcher as we know it.

Comments are welcome...

the german tech-magazine c't offers a tool for patch-downloads to create offline update-collections. Dunno if it works with vista, but i bet it does. You might have to learn german to find it on their site though Very Happy

No offense but I learned german for 9 years, and I still can't figure it out completely! Just have some kind of repulsiveness towards the language... Guess that rules out that solution Wink

7.0 == ME?

If all speculations are true, and MS does radically overhauls it, everyone will cry "oh no, no start button, going to good old xp"
