Posted: Fri, 30th Nov 2007 11:48 Post subject: Gamespot Editor Fired Over Kane & Lynch Review? |
|
 |
Quote: | We've heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn't necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to Gamespot shows that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching Kane & Lynch. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign."
Jeff's review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as "Fair" on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as "mixed or average reviews." According to our tipster, it wasn't necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann's rumored axing, but the "tone" of the review.
Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It's now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted.
As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. "As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life," wrote the tipster.
Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot haven't proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a "no comment."
Update: We did get confirmation that Mr. Gerstmann is no longer with Gamespot. The circumstances in which he was terminated or left of his own accord, however, were not disclosed. |

I hated the big fat blowhard so no big loss. And yeah I've pretty much accepted that review sites, especially shitty ass GS have long been corrupted and not to be trusted. The only aspect of the review you can trust is whether it is bug-ridden garbage or not by looking at the average on metasites. So pretty much...meh.

He was being very nice by giving that dreadful Kane & Lynch 6.0/10 -- it deserves 2.0/10 -- The advertisers/Eidos should have taken that into account.

That settles it. In the future I'll only trust fellow nforcers opinions on games. When I read through 4-5 pages I get a pretty good picture of the game which is not biased on one persons opinion.

Nice to see gamespot got exposed for what they are, corrupt and crappy reviews site, good luck getting new paying members gameshit lol. This guy was probably the only honest one that couldn't be bought, gamespot rule n. 1 out of 1 "you can't give crappy grades to games whose company is giving us money NOT to give the game a crappy grade" Jeff broke the only gamespot rule, I mean what was he expecting?

Assassin's Creed could be a good one to focus on in terms of exposing dodgy reviewers as the reviews are such a mixed bag.. what's going on there?

It makes perfect sense, a review is just a persons opinion, what else could it be.. GS has, imo, the most unbiased reviews on the net, i usually like them the best, IGN always seems to follow hype and go for what most other sites / persons thinks which is lame.
GS also have more mature opinions than most other sites, most of the time they dont rave about crap that has been done 234234234 times before which is good if you're in the 30+ year old range. Younger people should probably stick to IGN.

There are pages and pages of user comments about the review (100s), all giving the game a 1 out of 10.

Most of them are pretty much like this "You know what? This game is CRAP and Jeff rockz"
Jeff this and Jeff that. It wasn't that bad really, on the PC.

It's not just that, problem is that most of those big review magazines and webpage’s put their reviews up the moment the game is out. I don't know why people really believe that reviewers actually manage to play them till the end. Sure, they get their copies ahead of of time and some Gears or war or Crysis can be completed in that time (on easy-normal), but how can you complete and review a rpg of the Oblivion or Hellgate London size in three weeks? Answer is no way and that is why none complained of repetive "oblivion" parts in Oblivion. And in no way can they know how some mp will work after couple of months, jet you still see them praising it how good it is, and you see overhiped scores for huge amount of games.

i dont really trust game review sites that much.. i still go too em to see whats being said, and usually just to get an overall 'feel' for what the game is like, but ultimately... i just download the game for free and decide myself... i mean shit, with the control that publishers have over game review sites, how the fuck else are we supposed to decide if the game is worth our money or not?
