Quote:
Broadband industry leaders are to meet ministers to discuss how to stop the UK dropping into the internet "slow lane".

More than half of all UK homes now have a broadband connection, at an average speed of four megabits a second (Mbps).

But the broadband summit will hear other countries are moving more quickly to build ultra-fast networks that can deliver speeds of as much as 100 Mbps.

Ministers say ultra-fast broadband will be a key to helping UK businesses "innovate, grow and create wealth".

Average speed

"We need to be discussing how we can put this new network into place, because delay could be a barrier to the future success of our economy," said Stephen Timms, minister for competitiveness.

The broadband summit will discuss how industry, government and regulators can make sure Britain gets the next-generation network that will be needed as services like internet video take off.

Copper lines

BT - Britain's biggest broadband provider - has already warned that it may struggle to pay for an ultra-fast network.

But cable company Virgin says it will deliver 50 Mbps broadband by the end of next year - more than twice the maximum speed it currently offers.

Virgin's 50 Mbps service will be available to more than 70% of the 12.5m homes its cable network covers by the end of 2008, the firm said.

The company is not digging up streets or laying new fibre to homes, but is installing new equipment at the hubs and bundling together spare channels on the line.

Most of Britain's broadband access is delivered through existing copper telephone lines, which were never designed to deliver ultra-fast broadband.

BT is due to roll out ADSL2+ in the coming years but speeds will be limited to a maximum of 24 Mbps.

In the US, companies such as Verizon have invested billions of dollars in fibre to the home, providing hundreds of video channels and high-speed broadband.

BT is investing £10bn in speeding up the existing network, which includes some fibre, and will be able to deliver download speeds of 24 Mbps by 2011.

Can't wait.

whats the point when it will have some stupid cap probably around 5gb during peak times and i bet the upload will be the bare minimum in order to get 50mbps as they have previously done everytime they raised the connections of there customers to a higher speed.

they cant even give everyone a proper 20mbit connection , theres loads of complaints on there newsgroup from people who almost constantly suffer poor speeds and ive been a victim of that quite a few times, one day i had less than 56k speeds for more than 2 hours Laughing it didnt matter how many times i tried to reconnect the modem kept connecting at a crappy rate.

seems fine for the most part now though apart from on weekends when usually im not quite upto 15Mbps sometimes on saturday mornings i'll be lucky to get 8Mbps

I've never had a problem with their service.

I get top speeds all the time. The cap isn't that bad, dropped tp 5mb line between 4pm and 12 if you download more than 3gb.

All other times its fast.

I can't wait for the 50mb line. Very Happy

if you break the cap at 11:59pm your still capped for some hours though.

i'd rather be back on 10mb with no cap given the choice

I wouldn't. You've still got a hell of a lot more capacity with the 20mb line with the cap, than a 10mb line without.

Yay! VirginMedia continues with the dick waving contest (OH LOOK 50 MEGZ). Rolling Eyes

I wish they'd fix the current network first, instead of continuing to oversell it. And don't say "No, it's fine!" because it really isn't, as is evident by VM's status page usually being riddled with problems, and tons of forums pretty much dedicated to how shit VM has gotten recently. Rolling Eyes

Looks like you are one of the lucky ones.

Though all things said, it has been more stable the last couple of weeks, but I doubt it'll be long before speeds are all over the place. It's just a real shame because blueyonder was the most reliable net service that I knew off, ah the good old days Razz .

You do realise that VM is just a rebranded Blue Yonder with NTL. They have the same network and I'll wager all the problems are with the old NTL network.
The Blue Yonder network is a whole different kettle of fish. Its new less than 20 years old.

Ofcourse, i've been with blueyonder since the beginning. But since VM took over it's really went downhill, because they oversell the network.

Just because blueyonders network can be classified as new, doesn't automatically mean it works fine and dandy for everyone. What I was saying was pre-VM, I never had any problems with Blueyonder, it was amazing infact! But now, the speeds are so inconsistent, especially at peak times (and no, it is not the throttling Rolling Eyes ).

The most annoying thing is because the speeds are so inconsistent, e.g. jumping from probably 12mb down to 135kb, makes watching videos or whatever a complete joke since it has to constantly rebuffer because of how the buffering system works.

Just because you get consistent speeds, don't automatically assume VM is some god's gift to nerds. In fact, search for any forum that has a VM broadband section and i'd bet it'll be filled with people saying the same as me.

It's sort of besides the points i'm making, but I guess the more you know!

It doesn't change that the service is now terrible for alot of people, even Blueyonder which was the god of all broadband services (in the uk) Razz .

The rebrand would have came with some operational changes i'm sure. It's more to do with the UBR's being congested, because they push push push the internet packages (which is fair enough), but it just means the network becomes fucked. Even if the network is pretty good, doesn't mean it has infinite bandwidth speed, otherwise we'd all be living in 2TB/s world!

Thats because the people who have no problems generally don't bother to visit the forums. It's the same with almost every service or product.

Thanks I did not know that!!!

Hah, kiddin, but isn't there a link between the ammount of complaints between recently, and whenever the network was considered good (in the eyes of many).

And that's not a guess, alot of these forums i've browsed for years. So it's not just the "the happy people say nothing" factor.

Thats because you're in the old NTL area. Its probably the old Reddifusion (or however its spelt) network if its cable. If its ADSL, well the old telephone network was never designed to carry data.

Pretty much the same for me, though i'm on the Blueyonder network rather than NTL. I'm getting decent speeds just now, but only because the internetz isn't being clogged up at the moment Razz, after 10-11ish it's usually ok on days when it feels like being nice to me.

I think in my case it's just an overused ubr, which sucks for me I guess.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33624087-constant-complaints.html is a thread which basically says that all that ever is discussed these days on the forum is the shit speeds on 20mb Mad .

see what happens after xmas, after spending a few quid talking to tech support it seems that a major upgrade is being introduced.

I'd like to put HD TV on my Plasma, but the fancy set top box from Virgin costs £150 which seems a bit steep. If I got this and a 10 meg line (and no guarantee of any real increse in speed I'd forking out over £500.00 in just one year. Seems a bit steep.

We seem a bit behind in this country. I blame Maggie Thatcher and her deregulation of UK telecoms and ridiculous legislation forced on BT in the early nineties.

i know, my dad used to be a telecoms engineer for Plessy (GPT), in fact he helped design the system X, BT telecoms exchanges.

It's a sorry tale of political mismanagement and incompetent corporate bosses, who just couldn't see the future.

I took part in the first BT ADSL trials in 1994 in north London, and in twelve years my connections not improved. Then I was getting 512kbs, so little’s changed!

im from newcastle and ive had problems, you might be on a different ubrs than me though im on cable.ubr01.benw.blueyonder.co.uk, customer service for me has always been good but i use the newsgroups where the english techs hang out not the stupid phone support where you speak to some idiot who can only book an engineer because they dont have access to the virginmedia network to check ubrs utilisation etc
