that's one reason but the other is that cod was always populair for it's multiplayer...

CoD is a very very very good multiplayer game (for PC). I haven't tried playing Crysis online, but I'm sure it's nowhere near as good as CoD.

In terms of the single player experience, Crysis is insanely good whereas CoD4 is linear.

COD only has less stress on computers cause it doesn't have nearly as much to handle. GFX are good yes but your on a monorail for levels. Not nearly as much going on. GFX are not even comparable.

I hate this game but christ, you people need to stop comparing COD to this. Their not even in the same league.

I'm currently trying to create a level but I'm still busy with figuring out the editor.
There's just some weird stuff happening that keeps me from doing what I want.
Like vegetation disappearing.. or yesterday I painted sand around my whole island, and when I loaded the map again all the layers I painted were gone. That sucked!

Another weird thing that happened is when I tried to create a road..
So I painted the road around the map, and when I went to assign a road material to it, it just disappeared as soon as I assigned the material.
Now I can still select the road where it was, but it's not visible anymore and I can't get any material to work on it.

The small box that should show my materials in the material editor is also always blank. it's just white and doesn't show anything at all. damnit!

It's pretty hard to even get some proper terrain which doesn't look like shit while still beeing playable.

yeah my only real problem at the moment is houses. every time i make a house, as soon as i set foot inside it (or even without me going near it) it kinda bounces out of the ground!

other than that, ive got most things sussed... im building a map at the moment, heres my waterfall:
 Spoiler:

and some roads. these are from an abandoned map concept. perhaps tell me how your making the road and ill see if i can help you fix it.
 Spoiler:

at teh moment, its only those damn houses that are stopping me from having most basic things all figured out...

ive kinda got rivers sorted... the only thing im not sure about, is that it doesnt seem you can make a really windy river running to the ocean, you need to do some kind of trickery, like have a short waterfall into the ocean... its a pity the river tool doesnt work more like the road one..

that's a pretty nice waterfall!

I tried playing around with buildings a bit, and I noticed the same thing you mentioned (I think).

I place em on the map, maybe partly under the ground so nothing is floating around, and it looks good but as soon as I touch the building it bounces back up above the ground.
If I place it in mid-air it floats around, but as soon as I touch it, it drops down to the ground.

We must be missing some option to freeze that building so it doesn't move no matter what.

anyway.. my road problem originates from my material editor problem. no materials seem to work. check this out:

as you can see, my material preview thing is empty eventhough I got a material selected in the material editor. it's like that with all my materials. I have assigned a road_concrete material to my road, but as you can see the road is invisible.
 Spoiler:

edit:

nm, I got it sorted out.
The problem seems to have been vista's aero theme again.
I remembered that 3dsmax had problems with working properly when using the aero theme so I disabled desktop composition and the materials show up fine now, and my road is visible! yay!

do you know how to adjust the colour of a texture? seems to be 2 ways i can see to do it

either adjust the defuse colour on the actual texture itself, which works the best, but it wont save the colour when you reload the map

or do it on layer painter, which is a pain in the ass because you cant just change the colour and have it auto-update the texture youve done on the map (unlike the above method) - if you want to change a colour wit the layer painter, you have to repaint it... its stupid...

have you find a practical way to change texture colour, or keep the defuse texture colour?

hmm unfortunately I got no idea about textures yet. didn't do too much with that. mostly vegetation and terrain editing for now.

I think I figured out how to get proper buildings in though.
It seems that geometry entities have some problems when you move them into the ground, but apparently prefabs do not do that. they just stay where you put em.

if your prefabs list is empty (mine was) you gotta go into View > Open View Pane > Database View > Prefabs Library > Load Library > buildings.xml

that will fill up your prefabs and when you place those they don't jump around and kill you as soon as you enter em :-)

damnit, fuckin road just disappeared, what the hell!?

btw, how can you edit starting gear? I tried modifying the default_player equipment pack but it doesn't seem to do anything.

http://doc.crymod.com/

the crymods forums are also very nice, full of good stuff, but they seem to be down right now.

I guess you know those already, but maybe there are others around who don't.

wow I was just playing around with Flowgraph a bit. It's really easy to use (at least for me with some programming experience) and is very very powerful.

You can do some pretty funky AI stuff in short amounts of time, I love it!

yeah that stuff'll be fun to get into... if only someone on incrysis would answer my admn texture question Sad its the main thing standing in the way of me really having fun with the editor.

been reading up on the special edition 'crysis'... apparently plenty of people who orderd and expected the 'special edition' version, with a nice steel-book and bonus vehicle n shit, got royally shafted with a cheap-ass plastic case and no vehicle... ea's saying its not their fault (which is bullshit... remind me.. WHO is responsible for the distribution and packaging again?), and the retailers are saying its not theres (and it isnt, they just sell what gets supplied to em)

im glad i got the steel-book.. makes me feel better not to be the one shafted for a change...

its actually interesting... EA held back our release for a WEEK! only country in the world to get a delayed crysis release, they said it was a supply problem, but i expect it was because OUR copies of the game were being diverted to another country (australia perhaps?) - and even though we obviously didnt get the first batch, im surprised we actually did get the legit product where as some americans didnt...

EA DID promise the steel-books would be limited AND numbered, and they werent... but if thats the only EA lie thats relivant to my copy of the game, then i should count myself lucky... its EA after all, and it coulda been a LOT worse (like it is for those who got the crappy plastic release!)

well.. if I really like a game and decide to get a special edition, I want that thing to be the real deal and some special edition lookalike. The metal box is kinda important.

It's almost as if some people would get a plastic coin that looks like a metal coin in the Oblivion special edition.

anyway... my map is making good progress.
I got volumetric clouds, a north korean outpost and procedural vegetation and I'm in the process of making my AI do some cool stuff now with Flow Graph.

What exaclty is your texture problem again chiv?

-- nm I see what you mean now.
Cant seem to find a way around it either. didn't bother with changing texture colors yet so I didn't have to deal with it yet. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Creating a new material from scratch doesnt seem to work either :/

where in all that crap i wrote, did you read that?

and to be fair, the only REASON to have teh limited edition is FOR the case. the soundtrack is nothing special, the 'art book' is laughable, and the 'making-of' stuff is VERY brief and most of it is worthless...
-------------------

i wonder if the reason the diffuse colour wont stick is because im trying to adjust a texture that is 'read only', as the status bar mentions... perhaps i either need to duplicate it some way, or somehow BIND a texture to the map (making it unique and adjustable...)

hmm, strange, I created a new material, added a diffuse texture and changed the diffuse color, and when I closed and opened the editor again, the diffuse channel was empty and the diffuse color was also reset, but my material was still there.

so changes to materials just don't seem to get saved at all for some reason.
maybe there's some hidden button you gotta push for it to save :p

this is my map right now btw.
 Spoiler:

Doesn't look like a lot yet, but I'm getting there :-)

chiv, the crymod forums are back up and I found a solution for the materials!
Quote:

The material editor is integrated into our source control application. Since you guys don't have this it might function a bit weird.

To work around this, the best is to extract all materials from GameData.pak. Here is how:
-Open GameData.pak with WinRar.
-Drag the Materials folder into you Game folder so it sits next to other folders like Levels, config, Localized etc.
-Right click the materials folder and choose Properties.
-Un-tick Read Only.
-Click OK.
-Restart your editor.

As you can see the materials no longer have the little lock symbol on them. This means that they can be edited. You should be able to duplicate and add new ones as well.

thanx for the heads up... been trying to check that site for the past day but it was dead... ill give it a try later... seems a lot of functions in the editor are needlessly overcomplicated... i mean if your going to design a level creation tool, why not model it on the simplicity of something like 3dsmax... i think we probably got a watered down purposely bug-filled version of sandbox 2, and not the one the devs used Very Happy

just finished some online action... had my FIRST (believe it or not) run-in with a cheater... complete dipship, but it was pretty cool... he was like hovering over the map in power struggle, and just raining down literally 50 or so nukes, 1 after the other, bam bam bam... atleast i know i have a decent rig... cant imagine that many pc's holding up under that kinda strain...

good luck with your map... do you have anything in mind for it, any particular scenarios or enemy placements, or are you just adding and adding to the map and making it up as you go along?

I like the sandbox aspect of Crysis the most, so it'll most likely be a sandbox map with multiple objectives. I'll probably make the player drop there with a parachute and then you can just go and complete whichever objective you like.

i'm not quite sure what objectives that'll be though... I tried creating terrain that's exactly what I was looking for, but it didn't work out. So I just took that terrain as it looked ok and I'll just setup enemy encampments and stuff where I think they'd fit in. I don't have a plan or anything :-)

Don't you think that by the time you get an answer you would have been able to finish that uninstall-install? I mean, doesn't this game come on a dvd.. press install and go away doing whatever you need to do? Not meaning to sound like an smart-ass or something, just saying. Smile

Funny stuff how the performance in XP knocks the performance in VISTA out of the water, even with the hack.

It's such a joke that they've just disabled the features that are supposedly "DX10-only" in VISTA, and that you can enable (with a very limited exception) them all in XP, and that the performance in XP is so much better.

Once again VISTA proves to be a shit-OS, and the way they're using marketing-tricks to lure the easily fooled into buying it (eg. now in Crysis) is just sad.

Awesome game tho. Though I need a new computer I feel... I'd really like to run at Very-High with all the goodies turned on =]

power struggle is a great mode, but as others have mentioned, this game needs online ranking.
a multiplayer mode is simply not complete nowadays with stats tracking and ranking so you can set goals to work towards.
