The thin red line, don't think anyone mentioned it, it's a pretty good war movie, better than ryan imo.

Monty Python's The life of Brian
Monty Python's The meaning of life
Monty Python and the holy grail
Also, on a more serious note:
Sanjuro, yojimbo and the 7 samurai by Kurosawa.
No collection is complete without them.

you really can not compare gladiator to 300. thats like comparing jaws to predator because both films have something trying to kill people in em, or alien to shawshank redemption because its about someone trying to escape from somewhere.... you cant compare two different films like that...
and id still say the matrix was better than vendetta, because it was far more interesting... vendetta was more original, but not by much as they are both old been there/done that stories that weve heard again and again....
i would say matrix is a must-see, but matrix 2 and 3 are most definately not.
oh and im adding mummy and mummy returns to the list if someone hasnt allready, because those were great ol' adventure films, i think some of the very last ones made, actually... back when they knew how to make em

No. Matrix 1 was the original different movie with a twisted story. Matrix 2 & 3 did nothing but new effects to milk the cash cow.
It was like matrix 1 gave as 3D dimension we never knew and before understanding it, they threw us 4D & 5D.

im not bashing matrix 2, i quite enjoyed it, all im saying is that its definately not a must-see film.
but come on, you gotta admit, matrix 3 was pretty rubbish.. apart from the zion battle, and some parts of the hovership battle, everything else was weak, and the final neo/smith battle had some of the worst cgi ever seen in a big budget film... yeah matrix 3 = not shit, but saying its 'good' is about the best you can really say for it...
matrix 2 was great, matrix was excellent, and its the only must-see film in the trilogy.

wtf? how was lotr milking the cow? it was made up of 3 big books, with a huge amount of events and places to be visited... compressing the ENTIRE lotr trilogy into a 2 hour movie is impossible unless you want to completely change the story... but then it wouldnt be lotr... the story was about the JOURNEY, not a rational way to destroy the ring... whoever made up that image was taking the piss, not making a real point.. its funny, but anyone who looks at that image and thinks that the lotr story was stupid and overly complex completely missed the point of the story by a freakin mile...
in regards to the matrix, it was a fine story, but ill slap anyone upside the head who thinks its original.. the wachowskis basically raided a shitload of sci-fi movies and all of William Gibson's novels, took the ideas (often without even changing them) threw em together with a healthy dose of christianity and some 2d characters, and threw it up on screen with some amazing production values...
thats not pissing on the movie, it was very very well put together, but the ideas are not original in any way rant over.

Which holywood movie doesn't do that? Even stories that could have been told in one 2 hr movie are split up into 2 or 3 parts.
Seriously though, LOTR was one fine example of milking the cow.

Matrix had an original-good story in the first one. Moreover, the story was complete when neo figured he was 1337 and he could pwn smiths. 2 & 3 were the new ones to get more money after the success of the first one. LOTR was never to end from the first installment. We knew before hand that the story would evolve and conclude into 3 movies.
Matrix was unique. 2 & 3 were additions that didn't live up to the hype produced from what we got from the first one.

And the Matrix fanboy vs the LOTR fanboys clash continues.

I'm not well-versed with the LOTR world but the fact remains whoever wrote the book was just extending a very thin plot. All those (mis)adventures don't really enrich the story. Yes we know it was a tough journey full of suffering and all but why do we have to suffer such a long book/movie?
Spoiler: | Didn't figure you for a LOTR fan.........................................boy. Fact docketed for future use. Anytime you don't agree with me, I could retaliate with something like
OMG LOTR trilogy sux balls. |

Not true. Just as matrix 1 was about the one's self-realisation, 2 & 3 were about the rise of THE smith. A lot of crap like the merovingian shit could have been snipped out but I am not denying that a lot of movies are being stretched out nowadays.

hey.. could be worse... could be a starwars fanboy
and im allowed to be a lotr fanboy... its a NZ thing , it was made here, by nz'ers, and its the highest grossing trilogy ever (yes higher than your shreks, spidermunts, and pirates)
and i liked rotk, i think the ending was a bit drawn out but you kinda needed that for a journey that was so long... what do you mean by 'that was it'? everything was concluded, you HAD an ending... the fact it left you wanting more was good, because that probably means you enjoyed it, but the end was very satisfactory i felt. i hope he does the hobbit, that was another great book... god i hope sam raimi doesnt end up directing it, that'd be a fucking disaster.

Yeah, I was talking about the first movie. I didn't know about the trilogy back then.

Man Bites Dog - original Title: C'est arrivé près de chez vous.
About a killer and a camera crew. The camera crew is making a documentary about the serial killer, and the camera crew gets involved in his mishaps. Really funny film. Spllendidly acted by Benoit Poelvoorde as the serial killer

Wasn't the Matrix trilogy made in Oz? Ergo you should love it just as much.

Think he meant the end of the first part of the trilogy. |
oh not even close... why would a nz'er feel pride of something them australians did... and besides they didnt do it... part of the film was made in australia... but the visual effects were american, directors were american, etc...
lotr was filmed in nz, directed by a nz'er, effects largely done by nz'ers
shit, when we had the rotk premiere, i even shook orlando blooms hand..
...back when that actually meant something...

event horizon was very good.
yep cypher was an amazing film... id also recommend another of Natali's films, cube.... not the sequels though... the original was excellent... a prime example of great filmmaking with a low budget
oh, and in case noones said it yet
labyrinth very few films make me remember being a kid like that one does... it weas weird, surrealistic, fantastical... everything all wrapped into one to create a disturbing yet amazing film.
