I noticed that the Athlon (they really should lose that name now ) outperforms the intel on most benchmarks except the encoding tasks. And the amd proc is cheaper (by a lot) than the core2. Still the 6600 is the chip you see being most offered by system builders.
Am I missing something here? This discussion must have already taken place quite a few times before but please bring me up to speed here. And no, this not an attempt to fire up the old AMD vs Intel discussion. I would just like to know what's happening with these two processors.
That's all? Those are things that most people aren't even aware of. I do appreciate over-clockability but for people who aren't oc'ing (around 99%) the price difference alone should rule out any performance gains.
I think the big push of the E6600 by system builders and brand name computers has to do with profit margins or something else.
BTW swingman, what you see now for the athlon is the last you'll see of it. The new AMD structure is the "Phenom" which is AMD quad core using an onchip L3 Cache to feed into the L1 and L2 and they'll also be doing and X2 of it.

But they could have named new generations within the Athlon architecture something else. I mean they came with a new socket + 64 bits + dual core and they couldn't use a new name? Doesn't take a marketing degree to figure out that in today's world it's as much about form as function and sometimes form matters more.
AMD have always been a step behind Intel in the on-die cache. Hope this helps them get their act together.[/AMD fanboi mode]

The E6750 can reach upto 4.1Ghz. Was just curious about real world results. Might go for C2D myself soon.
They still used the same structure through the AMD 64+ - the AMD X2 AM2 socket.
That was their downfall. When AMD released the 64bit CPU's it smashed intel into the ground. Intel D got smashed by the X2, but the intel did a whole new structure design for the Core 2 Duo and the idiots over at AMD announced for the AM2 socket, the only change they were gunna make was it using a ddr2 memory controller. I'm an AMD all the way and my comptuers will never see the day of light when I put an intel into em but that was a horrible call on AMD. Why would you not make a whole new structure to combat Intel's brand new design. So they lost a whole heap of money on that.
So to make their money problems even worse, they buy ATI, which again was a horrible move. ATI was alread behind a whole hell of a lot and lost a lot of customers to the 8 series and their still stomping ATI even after 2 cards were released.
