the main problem with the episodes system, is the release date of the episodes.

the game was nice and the story is ok and we all used to the characters and 6hours of gameplay will have to wait 1 year for another 6hours to know the rest of the story and it's sucks.

they better release half life 3 from the point where episode 2 ends.

Uh so you know the 3 episodes are really hl3 or so have they told that instead of making a new game the briliant idea of having episodic content with more then a year gap between them all somehow they liked better.

I´ve got a question about the Retail (DVD) Version of the Orange Box for the PC. Thing is, i intented to buy it as i dont have Half Life 2 anyway so it would be a sporty good deal. So, does this Retail Copy still require Steam to be installed and is an Online Connection required even for the Offline Games? If so, will i be restricted the same way as with 2ks pity attempt with Bioshock?

when hl2 has been released, it was mentionned on the box that you had to have an internet connection to get the game activated
i dont remember for episode 1 but i'm almost sure, steam is going to be installed and internet needed to activate the files
though, you can play offline once its activated (episode 2 and portal Wink )

You can play offline but first store your username and password for steam logon, so it can log offline since the username/password have previously been authenticated.

Alright thanks. So at least its bound onto the steam account and NOT the hardware as i understand it. Sounds acceptable. Wink And yes, i´m kinda new to Valve´s Games (as far as purchasing Originals goes) so thats why i´ve asked. Only downside for me is that i dont really wanna put Steam on my Sys, but what the heck.

There is nothing wrong with steam. It's like every other software, only used as a content updater and valve's sub-platform software.

Why don't you guys just use a cracked Steam account and play that way? I find that to be the easiest way to play Vavle games, not having to deal with update packs and crap that doesn't always work from the scene...

I started a new game from the white forest base, and the AI is as it should be, don`t use your saves.

Im now replaying the game with commentary on, but it seems to me that the didn't quite finish that.

When you have subtitles on you can see some things they wanted to use while listening to the commentary.

For example, when you are in the mines at the point with the first thumper with the vortigaunt. You summon the lift and use it. On the top floor is a commentary node, when you play it with subtitles on it shows the text which is spoken and at the end it states "[Good point to take over the player view to look down and have the vortigaunt do his attack]" But the game doesn't take the controls over.

There also a commentary node in the cavern where at the end of the spoken dialog it states "[INSERT CONCEPT-ART HERE]"

Is this the retail version you're playing with? If so that's a bit disappointing. Personally I think they should release 'making of...' videos like films and scrap this commentary stuff but I suppose it's more cost effective.

Yeah its the unleased scene release. I just put all the gcf's in my steam folder and it works perfectly.

I just found another one and made a screeny, note that i made the green box around the text. Its not like that in-game.

It's a 10/10 game. Better than Episode 1, but it's to easy on normal, gonna play it on hard again. I hope EP3 will be like this one.

And is EP3 the end of Half-Life or will there be HL3?

Ep1-3 IS HL3.

And yes I think it has been stated multiple times that there will be a HL4. Gabe &co have not yet decided officially whether it will be in episodic format or not, but it has been confirmed HL will continue after the eps complete.

Far as im concerned all the episodes are considered expansions and not packed as a true HL3... I base that on comments made by Gabe Newell to the swedish game site: www.gamereactor.se where during an interview about E1 Newell stated there will be a HL3.

He stated later on that after they finish with Ep 3, they will ask for feedback from the community and see if they continue episodic releases or monolithic ones.

It was confirmed in April 2006 that Half-Life 2: Episode Four was in production, and that it would mark the start of a new story arc. Furthermore, it was confirmed that Episode Four was under development by a third-party studio under Valve Corporation's supervision.

Still shouldnt this confirm they were starting on a possible 3rd installment themselves?

Quote:

Eurogamer: So why did you go for this episodic system?

Gabe Newell: The original Half-Life took us two years to develop. With a considerably larger team Half-Life 2 took us six years to develop, so we thought if we were going to continue our trend with Half-Life 3 we would basically ship after we had all retired.

.....

Probably a better name for it would have been Half Life 3: Episode One, but these three are what we're doing as our way of taking the next step forward, but Half-Life 2 was the name we used.

Erik Johnson: But we can't change the name 24 hours before release [smiles].

Gabe Newell: No, but what I'm saying is this is what we're trying instead of the large monolithic release. Let's take what we would ordinarily do and break it up into three pieces and see.

Anyways I don't doubt that Gabe said some other shit to another publication, as the man(if he can be called such, with his weight more of a blob in semi-human form) is frankly full of shit, and I think HL2 turned out to be great In spite of his leadership, instead of because of it. So yeah who knows, he sure as hell doesn't.

If they can shorten the periods to six months I'm all for episodic content. If they can deliver 6-8 hours of gameplay every six months or so it would be best. I think that was their intention, it was supposed to be that way as I remember, but I guess they underestimated the developing time.

6 months are not a problem for a normal company. Valve though, takes its time to do games and their personnel is fewer than most big companies in the sector. However, I tend to agree with Mister_s. If they can pull an episode within 6-8 months then continue with what they are doing. Anything that doesn't fuck up their quality though...
