Okay, here´s the deal - right now, i can´t decide if im going to upgrade my PC or not.

My current setup:
AMD Athlon64 3700+ S939 Venice
1.5gb PC3200 RAM
GeForce 8600GT

And im thinking of getting this
Core2Duo E6750
2 gigs of Corsair DDR2 RAM (PC6400/800)
A new S775 mobo, ofcourse.

These parts are pretty cheap nowadays.. Will i see a huge performance increase?

Basically, is it worth the upgrade? Razz

I mostly work with Photoshop/Illustrator CS3, , often at the same time.. I usually have many apps open (PS, Illu, MSN, Foobar, Firefox with a few tabs etc). I also thought i´d start getting into the PC games scene after being pretty absent since i got my 360 a year ago..

Definently, that's a pretty substantial upgrade. Especially since lots of stuff is becoming multi-threaded now-days. The difference should be pretty dramatic. Go for it!

Being a gift wouldn't matter for shipping. Thats only for customs. As its second hand goods it wouldn't matter anyway.

I think you will find something there that will fit you budget.
I am thinking myself...maybe a
Q9950 2.83 GHz 95W 12MB $530
or the
Q9450 2.66 GHz 95W12MB $316
I guess that means a new mobo (current EVGA 680I SLI). EVGA has said that with a BIOS update you will be able to run the new 45s, but I am not so sure that will cut it

I'm sure that will be more than he needs for what he's doing, I dun think he's gunna be that big into PC games that a dual core couldn't handle

the new 45nm CPUs will be pretty nice, but you would already see a HUGE performance increase by moving to a Core 2 Duo E6850.
ALthough I would recommend you get a 45nm compatible motherboard and get a cheaper 65nm CPU now, like an E6550 (~150$) and overclock it if you have to. Then you can just upgrade in half a year without having to switch out any other components and it'll be affordable if you feel you need more performance.

but then, it all depends on how badly you want to upgrade now. if you have no problem with waiting, then by all means wait as long as you can. the longer you wait the better parts you can get for less money. it's always like that.

But everyone has a different point where he just feels the urge to upgrade.

Personally I switched from an old 939 Athlon 64 single core to a Core 2 Duo E6550 about 2 months ago and it's really helping me out when working with adobe after effects. the rendering speed increase is just incredible.

So yeah.. bottom line is.. wait as long as you can... but you can't wait forever, and upgrading now is not a bad choice.
The 45nm CPUs coming out in November will of course be faster for the same price, but not like.. *new GPU generation* faster, so the new CPUs won't give you twice as much performance for the same price.

Yeah, i´ve been wanting to upgrade for quite a while now, and now that i have a full-time job, im ready to do it Smile

And yeah, you could go on and on forever with the "just wait a little longer"-talk.. And I kinda get the feeling that the leap from my 3700+ to a E6850 (wich i probably will OC) and DDR2 ram will be quite massive Smile

What mobo´s support 45nm today?

And maybe i should wait for they paycheck in November, dont the prices drop a bit around christmas?

as far as I know intel isn't planning to reduce CPU prices anytime soon.
They only recently had a price drop when the the 6X50 CPUs were released and I think they'll stay there for a while.

All boards using the P35 chipset (MSI P35, Asus P5K P35,...) support the new 45nm CPUs as far as I know.
It should be mentioned in the article description if they support them.

here are pretty nice demonstrations of the performance increase you would see when moving to an E6850. I know the athlon 64 cpu there is not the one you currently have, but it should be fairly close performance wise. yours is too old and not included in the benchmarks anymore :P

I mean.. just look at supreme commander. I know from experience that it ran it like shit with my athlon 64 whenever some battles started going even with only one CPU player. and now it's totally playable with several CPU players at all stages of the game.

Nice, that really makes me wanna get this even more Very Happy

I might very well go with a 45nm supported mobo and a E6850 now, then go 45nm next year Smile

Oh and choice of CPU-cooler seems like a jungle too, tough i notice many people use Scythe coolers... How well do they perform in C2D OC´s?

hmm can't help you with that. I believe Cox is pretty knowledgable concerning coolers.

I'm using my stock cooler and got my e6550 overclocked from 2.3ghz to 2.8ghz without any trouble. the stock coolers got a lot better in recent years.

The e6750 is only 12.5% stock down clocked while 30% cheaper than the 6850 (e.g $194.99 vs $279.99 @ newegg). Wink

Just realize with the heatsink, with so many choices from different companies, all of which for the most part do an excellent job you'll come within a few C of eachothers temps. So no matter what you're picking a winner.

So, clocking a E6750 might be a much better buy then? But then again, you reach higher speeds with less clock with the 6850..

Is there any good comparison between the two? Maybe showing how well they perform OC´d aswell..

As for heat sinks...its a jungle indeed!
I think one of the best at the mo is the Thermalright IFX-14. Can be tricky to mount as it uses a extra "satellite" cooler see pic
http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_528_588&products_id=7024

Or the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_528_588&products_id=6940
You need 1 or 2 fans of course.(push pull config)
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2943&p=1

Next step would be water cooling, but you would start to throw a lot of money away then. Basic "good" Water kit would start at around 270-300$

The prob with all these "tower" coolers is that they take a lot of space, and wont fit on all mobos or cases, so be sure to do your research before buying. I have a Scythe Infinity (never used) that is up in the attic, cause I did not do my homework

best ever, it may not cool the extra 1C that others do but it also cools the memory and chipset
