It's got diablo style hack n slash all over it and focuses heavily on items and plenty of monsters to kill.
I'm going to use DII as reference so live with it.
Weapons, Armor etc: Pretty much like most hack n slashes. You can assign skills or weapons to either one of your mouse buttons. If your a mercenary which is the only one I've been playing so far you can dual wield pistols. You can assign one button to shoot both guns or each button controls a gun. Armor is but on just like DII, titan quest etc, except you have more choices, boots, pants, gloves, shoulders, grieves, head. Inventory is just like DII as well. Each weapon has slots but represented by an icon and each has it's own upgrade style. To get the upgrade some guys sell them or you can find little blue prints and build them with materials like you do in Guild Wars. Weapons are class specific, you can't use a sword if your a mercenary
Towns, Quests, NPC's: Towns are like they are in DII as well, person to buy stuff from, NPC's who give you quests, healers etc. Quite a good amount of quests to keep you amused. Quests are usually go out and go find someone, kill monsters etc. You can also switch between towns with ease, just go up to the console that lets you do it, or you can jump between town and fighting area with a portal. You can grab people to do quests like in Guild Wars.
Everything else: View is in FPS or 3rd person, just use the mouse wheel. Leveling is like every other hack n slash, you get 5 points for attributes and 1 skill point. Good deal of video options, texture quality, AA, Anisotropic, resolutions. Sound you can do 5.1, last I saw it had xfire built in. 10 slots to put in skills, you can also add one to the shift button, just click the botton next to the skill to do so.
Any other questions?

Now, how does that translate back to the game as a metaphor?

That is just so wrong, in so many ways. A MMO would never work with a gamepad, it's not supported.
Used to be Yondaime but forgot pass and what email I used on it. Doh. I had ~1200 posts or something, been around since NForce started or so, so i'm no new guy.

no, I guess you could with xpadder but the setup would still require you to have to hit some keys as theres a lot more buttons needed.

Final Fantasy 11 works very well with a gamepad. And it's an MMO.

My point was not that Hellgate London is a MMO you idiots, even though I think it is one. -_-
My point was that Hellgate London uses the classic RPG button layout, where you place skills on a skillbar, it'd be highly fucked up to use a gamepad with that. Plus, would be a pain in the ass to navigate various windows such as inventory, character, etc.

AHA ! but its instanced so you are not playing with hundreds of thousands of players but only with the handfull of players that share the same instance that you are on.

So what? So if a game has instanced areas it isn't an MMO? It has a place for you to group up with hundreds and thousands of different people and then go into the dungeon areas.
The developers refer to it as an MMO. I don't have any problems with it.

This games not ready for release as it is, its very buggy. Also I liked diablo 2's style of game lists where you could join any game you see, in this you have to setup groups before hand, so unless you come in with some friends, your basically playing alone most of the time (At least for me first 10 levels, nobody else is grouping)

So is this like Guild Wars (half mmo, meet people ingame in a city or something then form groups and start instanced quests) or like Diablo (normal game with chatroom where you create/join games) or like a mixture of the two?
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.

The textures are actually quite nice, not ground breaking but the best in any online game around (except UT3 of course lol) The beta client download is almost 5 gigs.

Like guild wars, you go into different towns where other people are and can form groups etc, you can also go anywhere without group members and if their a semi close distance from you, you can create a portal for them to get to you.

Bill Ropper doesn't seem concerned about the state of the game. So I won't be either.
And I wouldnt say it is VERY buggy. i have beta tested FAR FAR worse that was released in a FAR worse state than Hellgate would be if it were released tomorrow.
Some people are having more trouble in the game than others. This is what beta testing is for.

ABout the textures, most look fine, but sometimes in outdoor areas with textures and everything set to very high, the entire city looks washed out, like they took their good textures and forced them all to very low quality. Theres text on the signs you cant read, the police cars, other cars on the street look horrible, the ground is just one big ugly slab of grey nothingness.
Again its like they have good textures, but in some areas they force them to look like shit, and nothing in your graphics settings can fix it. I'm almost certain this is just a beta issue, but an interesting problem that deserves to be noted.
