They get a lot of money from the US government, more than the military should be able to afford. Their very existence is proof of the fact that the executive branch of our government have been siphoning off funds dedicated towards other things and dumping them into "black ops" projects (CIA ops or secret research programs...).
This is a big deal because it just shows how Bush and his cronies blatantly do whatever they want with money that Congress gives them, even though Congress should be the ones telling Bush how much money he can waste on what. It goes against the entire system of checks and balances.
It's hard to imagine an American weapons program so fraught with problems that Dick Cheney would try repeatedly to cancel it — hard, that is, until you get to know the Osprey. As Defense Secretary under George H.W. Bush, Cheney tried four times to kill the Marine Corps's ungainly tilt-rotor aircraft. Four times he failed.

Just shows what a fucking disgrace this country has become. With the 25 billion dollars put into the Osprey program, you could provide healthcare for 4 million children, feed all the starving people in America for 2 years, or reform a failing educational system. Instead, we try to find new ways to kill people, and even fail at that.
