Engine is DX9, DX10, and OpenGL 2.0 native. Support for DX10.1 is being implemented as well.
And here's a couple of quotes from Tim Sweeney:
Quote: | We also support Shader Model 2.0 hardware with minimal visual difference. |
Quote: | Are there any plans at Epic to upgrade the engine for DX 10? Have you already made experience with Microsoft's new API?
Tim Sweeney: Yes, we'll ship Unreal Tournament 3 with full DirectX 10 support. Support for multisampling is the most visible benefit. We're also able to use video memory more efficiently on Windows Vista under DirectX 10, enabling a given machine to use higher-detail texture settings than are possible in Windows Vista under DirectX 9. Most of Unreal Engine 3's effects are bound by fill-rate rather than by higher-level features like hardware geometry processing, so the real impact of DirectX 10 is incrementally better performance rather than entirely new features. |

Dude, that quote is for UT3, not about the engine.
DX10 native with no support (for now) for the geometry shader...

Yes, I know that. I just felt it was useful posting Tim Sweeney's answer about SM2.0 shaders in UT3 - seeing as after all, you were commenting on UT3 as well.

What do you mean, the engine? Because it supports the geometry shader.

Like I said, they made custom SM2.0 shaders. The engine is SM3.0+, while every developer can make its own custom SM2.0 shaders.

As far as I know (from recent dev interviews), geometry shaders are not yet available in the engine.

The engine supports SM2.0 as well as SM3.0 and SM4.0. No hacks are required for SM2.0. It's just up to each developer wether they want to support this or not.

Nope.
Quote: | Tim Sweeney: Oh yea absolutely, we will have full support for DX10, we will use their geometry shader stuff to accelerate shadow generation and other techniques in the engine, we will be using virtual texturing. With both UT2K7 and Gears of War we are offering our textures at extremely high resolution like 2000x2000 resolution which is a higher resolution than you can effectively use on a console because of the limited memory, but it is something that certainly will be appropriate for PC's with virtualized texturing in the future, so we will whole-heartedly be supporting DX10. It’s hard to say what the timeframe will be on that because Vista could ship this year, or next year, or whatever. But, we will certainly be supporting it really well when it comes along. |

Because they have to rewrite all the shaders of the game. Why should they do all that work for those with the outdated hardware?

then explain , why use midway this fallback? then explain me , why had epic put the fallback in the u3 engine?

Look at the BioShock SM2.0 hacking that's going on. They are basically rewriting the shaders and works slow and looks ugly. So why bother? |
i called this mods. then they try to rewriting the shader. a they use not this fallback in the engine.
btw the sm2 fallback means , that the sm3 cards user can play the game in sm3 and the sm2 cards in sm2 ( like the dx10 feature in the new games ) and this means more buyer.
a i say it again , the developer give a shit about sm2 card users

So only 4 hours of gameplay?
That's the shortest FPS I have ever played. (Not yet but at the weekend!)
It's like playing a game for only one evening.
FFS! How can you write a game that is only about the gfx. This game is meant for the gfx whores. Not the story or whatever.
I remember MoH: AA. That game was superduper! Good story and gfx for its time.

We'll have to see about that. The interviews I've read were from 2007, lol, so don't know. Believe it when I see it.
And 2000x2000 textures? They said that UT3 for PS3 will use Bluray's full capacities for more maps and higher textures than the 360 version. With textures like that for PC, it will be like 4-5 DVD9s.

Maybe i am misunderstanding this but ..... Isn't it weird that you don't need a net connection but you do need to have the firewall enabled? I suppose it doesn't care about the net connection though. It probably just goes to allow itself in the firewall -- then figures out it can't and fails miserably.

mmm I wouldn't judge how much time those guys played the game so far there probably not playing on hardest difficulty or nothing. On hardest difficulty the first level in the demo itself takes a good deal of time to get through in one piece. So if you dont want it to be short then play it on the hardest setting.

It probably tries to add the game to the allowed apps in the firewall, and when it doesn't succeed, it crashes.

I think I'll still enjoy the game, even if it's only 5-6 hours long. I'm sure the 4 hours guy was rushing like hell, as I played a good 50 minutes in the demo alone.
