I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I've never had this happen before, so I hope it's even possible to solve this problem.

Yesterday I took a load of pictures (with a Canon EOS-1D) in RAW (*.cr2) format, on a 2 gig eXtreme III SandDisk compact flash card (wow that's a mouthful).

When I tried loading them onto the computer via my usb 2.0 card reader (importing them with adobe Lightroom 1.0), only the files from the first folder where transferred. The other half of the batch turned out to be corrupted. I'm not sure when it happened, since I was able to play back the pics on screen before getting the card out of the camera, and nothing funny happened between that point and insertion to the card reader.

The corrupted folders contain all kinds of files and folders with gibberish file names, and volume size is supposedly 235 gig (would be quite cool for flash memory...). The files can't be transferred or opened, and running chkdsk /f solves nothing.

I wonder if anybody knows any steps to recover the pictures, since I don't feel like doing the shoot all over again. I hope someone can recommend some dependable software that might help.

Thanks in advance!

It's quite possible that only the filesystem is corrupted. If a card is really defective then you'll usually get the "is not formatted" message.

Try using a program that is intended for recovering files from corrupted FAT filesystems.

There are a lot of them, I found some in google, I have no experience with them so I can't say whether they're good or not:

Thanks for the suggestion, I will see if I can rebuild the file system somehow with that software. Otherwise I'll just take it to the camera store.

Cheers!
