@My local Gamestop here in Switzerland they where only selling censored German copies for 100Sfr!! Employee told me that uncut versions will arrive next week! Next week!!!! I sauntered over to this semi-lame dvd/cd chain store called City Disc and to my amazement, discovered they were selling the international version for 65 Sfr. ...but what is that in the corner gathering dust, maybe being used as a book stand by the not-so-bright 18 year old farmer girl at the check out? Bioshock Collectors Edition!! "How much is that?", I asked. "Oh, I thought this was a window display!", She sniffs. " Uhh...80 Francs, I think..". "Thank you, I'll take it." As I handed her my credit card she dreamily remarked that computer games are a boy-thing, aren't they?
Playing now. No problems whatsoever with installation/activation.

well valve offers additional security a solid boxed copy doesnt, to be fair.
once youve bought a steam game, you have it for LIFE... doesnt mater if your pc craps out or whatever, its bound to your steam name so as long as you have that, you have the game
a bought pc game, you lose the dvd or it gets scratched too badly, your done.
but i agree, nothing beats a tangible game release.... i only deal with steam because of half life 2 and css (and tf2 soon hopefully )

AFAIR, Valve releases always were cheaper on Steam. I guess the price is up to devs, Valve gets its money anyway.
And yeah, it sucks big time. I see absolutely no reason for a healthy man to use this FUCKING CRAP instead of getting nice box with CD inside. |
I can assure you that D2D Platforms are the future, not tomorrow and not in 2 Years. But in the near Future (10 and more years) this will be the most used thingy to get Games !

DVD = 100 years I heard, far from forever. What if a cure for death comes out in 25 years?

I think steam has continued to grow and be a more viable platform for gamers to get their games from. It will probably continue to do healthily and expand its content offerings. It being around in 5 years is probably a pretty sure thing. While on the other hand PC games being sold in stores atleast in the United States, is doing not so well. You go to the gaming stores and they have huge sections for console games and one tiny shelf for PC games. Major retailers like Best Buy and Target do still carry large pc gaming sections. They are shrinking every year though. The PC gaming industry is becoming less and less attractive to these retailers. Don't be surprised if before long steam is a better option than your local game store.
But fuck I don't know where you live it might be different in your country. Here's hoping it is.

I second WalkerBoh. The copy you've purchased on Steam stays with you not for your life, but for its server's life.
Everything can happen, including viruses and fire that will simply destroy all account information and - wow - you have no games, you have no money spent on them.
The only thing we shouldn't worry about is if Valve goes bankrupt - such a money sucking system as Steam will be picked up by some major company.
And, well. Palpable copy _always_ wins. I want to see my collection of games standing on shelf, I want to have printed manual and other useless shit like Bid Daddy's figure.

A dvd can be stored for like 50 years, if archived (i.e. no/little usage), so i think i'll place my bet on Steam outlasting it.

Having a great time with this game.
Spoiler: | I just made it to the Farmer's Market. I am glued to this game. The story and everything else is just addicting. The only thing that really disappointed me was this:
Way back in the Medical area I found a door that had a furnace inside the room. There was a dead Splicer on the drawer. I pressed the button and the Splicer was taken in and cremated!! When the cremation drawer/table came back out there was Adam on the drawer!!! Anyway, I used the Telekinesis plasmid to carry other dead Splicers into the furnace area. I positioned a Splicer on the drawer and pressed the button. The Splicer was pulled into the furnace perfectly and the door closed!!! You could hear the awesome fire sound from the furnace. But when the furnace/cremation chamber opened and the drawer came out the Splicer was still there and not even burned! That totally sucked! I know, I know, it would have been a game killer because I would have been able to get unlimited Adam. But who cares, let me make that decision. It was just a bummer to see such a realistic game show a flaw like that. That is the only thing, other than that the game has been absolutely perfect, a joy to play and experience. I am going through it on medium difficulty now. I will probably try hard after I beat it. |

can you install the game on an unlimited amount of PCs as long as you keep uninstalling it everytime you want to install it on another PC and only have it installed on 1 PC at a time? Or will the game be somehow bound to the hardware of the PCs you install it to ? Because that whould suck if you upgrade your PC often

One thing I don't understand is this - Why don't they put a time stamp on this type of protection. Release it the way they did but after 3 months the protection disappears. They could do this by having the installer connect with their servers to see the date, not the desktops of course. If it's a certain date, like 3 months after the initial release then the game installs without copy protection. This would maximize sales and slow down piracy. After 3 months when the sales have dwindled it doesn't matter if it's pirated then. This is what they should do if they are going to try to fight piracy. I have always said, you cant beat piracy, you can only hope to contain it. The only problem is that the servers aren't around forever. So we have the same problem if the servers disappear. Geez, it's really a mess. Just like getting a Steam game. How long will you actually own it, really? Hopefully Steam doesn't die like HEAT or other online systems.
My 2 cents,
MD
