bout time we had one of these, so that hd rip related questions dont end up in other topics, plus i's gots some questions...

i dont believe there are any agreed upon rules yet for hd rips correct? nothing governing filesize and so on? on real rule so far would be the resolution, but thats a given...

so perhaps 'the keeper of all hd coolness' could give me/us some info on what are good file sizes to look for... i mean what, roughly, is the file size at which a 720, or a 1080 x264 encoded release, going to look as good as the source material, to the point where you can almost not see any difference.. source material, and image complexities are never the same obviously, so a bright cgi film is not going to require the same high bitrate as a fast paced live action film, to look as good, but some general rule of thumb would help.

for example, is the 1080 hv release of 300, at around 10 gigs, going to look really really good, or is 10 gigs @ 1080 not quite enough?

720 movies are usually roughly around 4-5 gigs, 1080 is usually 8-10 gigs for rips.

Heres a list of movies I put together in a couple days, granted it's missing a hell of a lot

Quality 720p rips are usually 6-8GB, quality 1080p are usually 8-16GB. It depends on the length of the movie (obviously) and the sound codec used. I love DTS-ES, and that's a 1.5MB track, so it gets huge. Where I get my stuff also compresses some of the movies in FLAC, which is lossless codec, good for all those uncompressed HDDVD/BluRay tracks.
Also, small 1080p releases suck. Really. 8GB are rarely any good. Some are, when the movie compresses incredibly well (i.e. Deja Vu), but most don't, and as a result of the high compression, you see more detail in the 720p release (Laughing). 12GB+ is the preferred size.
4.5GB 720p releases are generally aight (not more), and you really see the difference when a bigger release is out (6.5GB+), both in PQ and AQ.
Sizes of releases also vary when the source is considered. Making a huge release out of a 1080i (interlaced) release is insane, lol. So those releases are generally smaller than the riped releases. D-Theater releases have the potential to look better than HDDVD/BluRay releases, as they are often mastered with more care and from better sources.
Example of a D-Theater release:

As a general rule, HD scene sucks hd ballz. Most releases are not cropped/resized right, so movies are either missing pixels or resized wrong.
Septic are the worse.

Just my 5 UHD cents. Wink

I notice a lot of audio out of sync in hdtv releases, and video speed ups/audio sync issues in hd rips too. The 1080p release of 300 by hV had a couple of spots where the video was sped up for some reason which caused the audio to come out of sync.

i think that's the performance issue.. or not

i had the similar situation when i watched a 1080p movie on a crappy pc

edit: nvm, it's a issue with encoding, read at doom9.

well now im worried, because im getting rips from hv, progress, halcyon and ppq...

i might just give that 1080 10gb 300 rip a shot.. given its length and the fact that its not purely constantly fast action, it might be decent size/quality release... and ive never seen 1080 quality in motion yet Very Happy

NEW QUESTION!!

these huge ass 25 gig releases, using the ts format... are these original files straight from the disks or have they been re-encoded (ie how standard dvdr movie releases are, from original dvd9 sources) - i only ask because im wondering if what im downloading is actually original untouched quality...

I believe those are rips from hd cable/sat, not from hd-dvd/bluray discs.

Leo, can you actually hear the difference between the lossless audio and DD5.1/DTS? I've got a pretty high end setup and I cannot hear the difference between DD and DTS.

I can hear a clear difference between DD 5.1 and DTS. It depends on your system setup and your ears.

Exactly. I hear a big difference between a DD+ and a DTS track. Between a DTS and an uncompressed track, not so much.

Well, I've finally decided to take a look at HD video, to see what's the fuss is about. For that purpose I've downloaded 300.2006.1080p.BluRay.x264-hV - 10gb. Frankly, it looks just about the same as a normal DVD, not to mention huge amounts of noise. I've tried several players, same noisy picture. WTF? Am I missing something, this rip sucks or HD sucks?

Yep, just figured it out from some review of the movie that it was indeed made to be grainy. Weird I didn't notice it in the theater.
False alarm, thanks for help.

yeah thats the release i have... and yeah, grain, desaturated colour and increased contrast are part of the movies style. im really getting into this hd shit, the differences are massive in some cases... and i thought 720 was impressive... aint nothin' on 1080.. cant wait till i get a bluray or hddvd drive so i can start buying these bastards.

Two comparison shots for ye'! first is 300, comparison between standard 640x272 dvdrip, and 1080p (same release you have). Second comparison is Hot Fuzz, same specs: 640x272 vs 1080p

enjoy the quality goodness!
