So as I mentioned in the Bioshock thread, my system has been overheating since I fired up the Bioshock demo for the first time, locking up when I hit the water the first time.

Well ... she finally gave out. I got the general hardware failure Ring of Death. Its gone.

So my question is ... what model of 360 should I be going after to ensure that I get a flashable drive? Is there any way to salvage the DVD drive in my burnt out unit? Seems like I remember reading that the DVD drives are married to the mobo somehow... is there still no way around this? If I get one of the new HDMI supported 360s, will I be able to flash it?

I would like to purchase a new system when I get off of work this afternoon and I was hoping some of the more knowledgeable Nforce folks would help steer me in the right direction. Thanks guys.

OK... thanks guys.. Im gonna try the X-Scene Xclamp replacement this weekend. That towel method seems suspect... It looks like a lot of people have had success with it, but Im not sold. Is the reasoning that the thermal paste heats up and spreads out more evenly or something? I dont see how superheating your consoles innards are going to help. Alas, Im lazy and before I get the momentum to fix the x-clamps I will probabably have a go at it.

After all... I was just going to trash my old 360 anyway... since I dont think you can part it out really.

Ill post my results when Im completed. Thanks again guys. A lot of the cats on here wont even respond to you unless you have 999,999,999 posts. Pretentious cunts! Wink

Wait, i'm missing something... did you mess with the console in any way that voids the warranty?

Ya KaputXino, I voided my warranty I guess.. I opened it up and flashed the firmware.

Thanks for the heads up on the X-clamp mods KaiKo, I will definately give it a try.

Well... minor update. Dont ask me why or how, but the damn towel method worked. Im now playing it with the case open and a house fan blowing the shit out of it until I have the time this weekend to make the X-Clamp modifications. While Im at it I might look into improving the actual fans, heatsinks and airflow without making it some sort of frankenstein monster with parts sticking out all over and holes drilled in it every which way.

*EDIT* OK... well ... it worked long enough for me to hit the stairs in Bioshock and then "bleep", frozen screen... Ring of Death. So much for the towel trick. May work for some, not here... or at least not with Bioshock Sad

hey
i did the clamps thing it helped for amonth(im not abig gamer so it probably would last even less if i played alot)
but then freezes came back and after few days 3 red rings.
i sent it to www.xboxdummy.com and it works for amonth now and going forward.
clamps alone wont solve the problems.
i also tried that extra fans they sell for xbox after i replaced clamps and it came back with problems.
anyway for the time being the fan that they installed doesnt even draw hot air so i guess it keeps it cool.

clamp replacement and as5 thermal paste WILL solve the problem. the xclamps warp the board under heat pulling it away from both chips at the corners. replacing the xclamps puts the pressure back the other way.
