How do you tell your missile troops to stay where they are and not open fire?

I turned fire at will off, but they kept firing.

I'm assuming you don't want to shoot at enemies engaged in combat with your own melee guys, you can kill your own guys, yes?

Also, with the cavalry, obviously they cause extra casualties when they charge, the game says it should be done many times until the enemy is dead. Are you supposed to manually run them in, then out, then back in? Or is that part of the AI?

Turn fire at will off, then give them the halt command. They'll stop firing then.

Alot of the time you have to tell the cavalry to charge again by double clicking on the enemy again, otherwise they tend to engage in melee combat after the charge.

Gotta do it manually if the enemy are fighting back, if the enemy is running just let them be, they will circle back around and charge again on their own.

Archers are gay sometimes, esp. on walls, they will try to shoot through the walls and waste alot of ammo, they wont listen to you when you tell them to switch targets (Halt halt halt halt, hold fire...attack THIS guy...nope they still shoot into the wall trying to hit the guys on the wrong side)

Another AI bug is when the enemy tries to enter your town through the gates and you have hot oil dropping down on them...each time the oil drops they route and retreat, getting more units killed by more oil dropping, then they regroup and repeat until their entire group is dead, never breaking through the gate...its fucking retarded, and I killed about 1700 troops that way, no fun at all.

Hi,

i'm really getting desperate. I cant even install the game.

My specs:
- Windows XP SP2 (under SP1 environment same problem)
- Athlon 1,4
- 512 MB RAM
- Deamon Tools 3.47 (Safedisk Emulation enabled)

When mounting the first CD and beginning the installation process it seems to work fine. Then all of a sudden at around 40 % progress the installation comes to a halt w/ the following error msg:

Code:

Error 1309: Error reading from file i:\Setup\Data\Data\editor\brush_01.tga. Verify that the file exists and that u can axx it


At that point i have to cancel the installation.
Anyone else experienced similar problems?

Another thing is that i tried to install Alcohol 120 % v1.9.2.1705. But that wont work either. I get a Windows Installer error.

Code:

This installation package couldnt be opened. Verify that the package exists...


It would be nice to try out mounting via Alcohol. Maybe that would solve the case.

Hope someone has some hints for me.
Lookin forward to your replies.

Well first try burning it, then Try it on another comp, if it still doesnt work re-download it, if its having errors reading the data it might be corrupt, but im wondering how you even got that far without an error, so it might not be that but theres no way to see for certain so your best bet is to download again, its only the first CD so far Smile

Only one thing that held me back from a definate purchase.

No conquest MP mode.

And don't gimme "It can't be done"

In today's computer gaming world it can fuckn be done. Lazy devs is all it is.

errrrr.. the game is trying to be semi realistic here... and remember your capital is... well your capital.

And goot.. u can bribe enemy generals to join you.

I dont think thats too big a problem, I'd rather see some new AI tactics in battle.

If they attack my town they cant win unless they bring cavalry, i put troops in the middle and my horses to the side, they go down the long narrow path to my troops and my generals blitz them from the back, they never turn around, they never learn, I can do it multiple times in any battle, and it simply decimates their armies.

The only time they pose a threat is when they have like 3000 men and my generals cant break through...well I just get through as many as I can, run em away, wait till they turn around and sllllowly start marching to the center again, bam hit em again...what kinda AI is that?!

If they are outside a city this doesnt work as well obviously, but defending one of your towns is so incredibly easy, esp. considering the comment I posted last time about the hot oil and them routing and constantly repeating this until they all die...stupid things like this ruin town battles.

I'm playing on very hard btw, I figured out easy,medium, AND hard are all pathetic, and I dont see much of a difference on very hard...

Also, when I'm not playing romans I get attacked right off the bat by like 4-5 nations and swarmed from all directions, and your kingdom is ussually spread all over the map in little pockets, its ridiculous when my towns get sieged twice in one turn, because they dont feel the need to merge their armies or even back each other up...nope just siege, attack, lose, send in next, siege, attack, lose...they eventually wear my armies down and destroy me, but their means to doing so is pathetic, and having to fight 100's of battles is not fun! (auto-battle sucks and ussually loses especially on very hard so I absolutly must control every single attack)

This has just been my observations after starting the carthagian, seluceid, and that barbarian campaign...the Roman campaign didnt have these faults but unfortunatly for me its on medium difficulty and all the work I've done is useless cause thats not a challenge at all and I'm now bored with roman units Smile

The game is great dont get me wrong, just dont believe its perfect, and if you start the game start on very hard battle difficulty, once you get the hang of battles the AI sucks too much for medium and hard to be any fun.


I was just playing the game and my town got attacked, I killed the enemy and they start to run, so I take my cavalry and tell them to pursue...my cavalry are inside my town, and as they try and leave through my front gates, guess what happens, they pour hot oil on them, kill my faction leader and about 200 cavalry troops as they all struggle to get out, but end up routing from all these losses and try to run back in, only to be oiled again, by my own town.

I just lost another campaign because I learned that my own town defences will attack my own troops, not just throw oil on them, they fire arrows non-stop at any of my troops positioned outside, trying to go out to chase down the enemy is suicide because of the oil my own town will drop on me, positioning reinforcements outside the town is useless because going to the aid of my town makes my town defences kill me, basically defending your own town is FUCKED UP. I never had to really defend that much in the roman campaign, but now I do and I realize the ridiculous bugs this game has.

If i send people outta my gates.. the oil does *NOT* drop on my own people.. or my reinforcments..

And they do not shoot at my own people...

I always chase down the enemy.. and never once have had oil poured on me..

Excellent, I will have to reinstall the game then, but I stick by my opinions of this games AI, it is the single thing bringing it down from greatness. Sometimes it amazes me, but more often then not it disgusts me and insults me with its stupidity.

When I have to fend off 5 small armies in one turn because the enemy is too thickheaded to combine its armies I get tired of fighting at all and have to quit playing, the problems with the AI are mostly minor but when you add them all up it becomes much worse.

Um I think I'm justified in that, enemy sends in 100 troops against my 1000, I slaughter them, enemy sends in 75 troops against my 997 (oh no lost 3 troops), I slaughter them, enemy sends in another 100 against my 1000, I slaughter them, enemy decides to up the troops to 200, I slaugther them...then I slaughter their towns (and the AI sucks at defending towns, I can setup the same ambush every battle and I'm almost gaurenteed a win, the ONLY way I will lose is if they have massive amounts of cavalry), I win....wow such challenging AI.

Oh they suck at attacking towns too, position a buncha archers on the top of your walls and they will run before even breaking through because you just killed all their troops while sitting at your walls. They coulda stayed back with some onagers but they have no clue how to do that.

And dont even get me started on bridges, if you attack an enemy by a bridge they wont even DO ANYTHING...they just sit there and die, because they have no clue how to use bridges.

i agreed with knight as well, the thing that pisses me off the most is stupid ass things the AI does that any decent tester should have noticed and made them fix. like the AI standing in the way of missile fire from towers. At one time I thought I got lucky but no, all you have to do to defend a town is simply lure them into range of the towers using calvary and go back inside town and they will form up right outside the town walls. I have watched countless times as a whole regiment of troops get slaughtered by one tower shooting nonstop while they just stand and take it.
oh and this is even more frustrating when you are attacking an enemy town with two armies(just about the only way to get rome besides losing most your men on a frontal assault) and your stupid AI general has all the seige equipment deploying like 10 feet outside their wall, and firing flaming ammo at who knows what, apparently town buildings you want to keep. And once the ammo from the siege weapons are depleted, the troops just run away. it would be funny except for all the time wasted in setting up a perfect seige, just to be fooled by your own AI general.
it really bothers me how amazing the strategy is in this game but how lacking the ai is. it really almost ruins the whole game.
