I still think The Darkness is one of the best fps game on every platform.

its so cool great gfx - nice gameplay - lots of fun! GOTY next to the Darkness - if gta doesn't make it this year..the atmospehere is so cool with all this 60s flair everywhere - what i like most are the banners, posters etc. everywhere - it even translates them into german text when you look at them. Played it on medium and found it very hard- you really need to use your environment - hack the bots / sentry guns so they fire at your enemies - use plasmid - its cool when you run around kill some guy and some girl appears crying you killed her daddy and shoots at you hehe

And about GOTY, if its half as good as it looks(can't wait for work to end to try the demo) then it should win, without question. Darkness had a alright story and was fun as hell with all the gameplay elements but was just a bit more than an above-average shooter.

in the demo theres a sign that says happy new year 1953 or 1959 i forget..
yer, but the style throughout the game is art deco which is 20-30s, it may be set in the 50s but its the style which is 20s 30s

There is a banner saying "Happy new year 1959", but all this indicates is the year when everything went to shit. If you listen to the recording made at the party you'll hear that. When Rapture was established is anyones guess, but it could easily have been 20 years prior to it's downfall, so 30's art deco would fit.
I'm also wondering when the actual game is set, it's obviously many years after Raptures fall, because the place is a hellhole. I was thinking maybe the mid 60's, or later as the main character is smoking on the plane at the beginning and that was outlawed in the mid 80's so it's definitely not set anywhere near the 21st century.

Oh, it didn't take long for the place to turn to hell then. I find that unlikely myself just because of how decayed both the environment and people are. It looks like many years have passed since it was a utopia.
I guess it's ok though, if you arrive at the end of 1959 so it's about a year since they were holding parties and the like.

Apparently the game is only set a year after the chaos erupts in 1959, which makes perfect sense considering the external damage to the buildings isn't that bad and the plumbing and lighting/electricity are still partially functional.

Seriously though, I think my unit is overheating. Can anybody point me to a discussion on cooling? I get this machine "beep" and then the video freezes. It feels hotter than it normally does, and its in a well ventilated room thats ~ 72 degrees F.
After it freezing repeatedly (usually in the opening scenes) I decided to try another demo, Dirt. After it locked up 5 min in while I was driving around trying to knock off every piece of the car I decided that it probably wasnt a corrupt download or something.
Never had this problem before... is the game just too much for the ol' 360?
P.S. Fuck all of you that are playing it. Im not gonna say Im DYING to play it, but I was really looking forward to this title... Id gladly eat a baby to play this game.

Yeah, played through the demo again. It's set in 1960 and Rapture was built in 1946, those dates are ok with me. Seems plausible.
New years eve 1958 is when the shit hits the fan, if the audio diary at the 'happy new year 1959' party is anything to go by. If the protagonist arrives late in 1960, then potentially almost 2 years have passed since that event. Which is certainly enough time for the place to degrade to the point it has, and like you said, the utilities are still functioning, so it can't have been collapsing for too long.
