Well this is how I play it with my friend. We do that Direct IP thing. I host the game. I have my firewall off and I have the modem directly connected to my comp, no router. It works.
Make sure you click "New Game" once you in the lobby after you hosted direct IP. Once you create the Game (select course etc.. ) then tell your buddy or buddies to try and join your IP.
