I bought BF2 on the day of release. Got fed up with it a few months after when I realized the assault rifles can't hit the right side of the barn.
Why? In BF2, good luck hitting someone with your first round with an assault rifle within 75 feet. In 2142, the assault rifles WILL hit where you aim, don't forget that there is a cone of fire as well to allow balance.
In 2142, the vehicles and infantry are able to kill each other. Unless you're really good, or fighting a stupid team, most of the time you won't be going on a tank/walker rampage. The Motion Mines are guaranteed to kill you, active defenses will only absorb one or so of those mines. The Pilum H-AVR is also a fear for vehicle whores, it's basically a gigantic stab for a vehicle. Sounds powerful too.
2142 is more optimized, uses less memory, is more stable, and the unlock system is superb.
Don't get me started on the Zeller. I love that rifle.
2142 is BF2 for Counterstrike accustomed FPS nooblets. Everything in 2142 was simplified and condensed to the point of no skill whatsoever.
Invulnerability shield on tanks/walkers/hovercraft that guards against EVERYTHING for x seconds.
Autotracking dual-purpose air-to-air missles. Point within 35 degrees of your target, spam 10 , guarenteed kill. Its who sees who first - the end.
Spammable titan turrets that require no skill whatsoever.
2142 is EA's attempt at grabbing the CS/Enemy Territory crowd and it shows
I will agree however that the infantry combat feels better. The vehicle side of things (which is what defines the BF series) is FUBAR.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

BF2 is way better,
I got no problems hitting someone withn that range.
just like immunity said, this aint no arcade shit like CS
Only thing that's buggin me sometime's = BUNNY HOPZ
Infantry only servers are so damn nice to play,
best without Commander/UAV.
Aha, so CS is arcade shit and BF2 uber realistic military shooter?
I prefer bf2, but, man, people are idiots, it is so hard to find a decent server where you wont get run over by some idiot who wants to steal your vehicle. Stupid chopper and jet campers are willing to do anything to get one, and then crash it in the nearest tree. It seems like every server is filled with those idiots, and it is rare (at least for me)to find a server where the team works as a team, instead of TKing everything in sight.
Sig too big. -Nothing is too big for Fedor. Expect a nasty armbar.

I suggest trying Project Reality mod if you havent already. Most of the ppl on the servers are mature and play as a squad usually. Especially Tactical Gamer servers where voip is used often as well.
yea, its a great game. i recommend you grab Special Forces if you didnt buy it already. SF gives you an extra unlock tier, and a bonus unlock on rank. but, i have heard a rumor that if you login to SF with your account and play for awhile you will have the unlocks even if you are running your account on a vanilla install.
and another thing, there are 2 great mods out in Project Reality and POE2 to try out, plus Forgotten Hope 2 should be out by the time you get burned out on BF2...
good times.

Battlefield 2142 Revive brings back EA's cult-classic online shooter
Quote:
The ten-year-old sci-fi shooter Battlefield 2142 is back, sort of, thanks to Battlefield 2142 Revive, a fan-made project that went into release just ahead of the weekend. It's free to download and play, and even though it isn't officially sanctioned, Electronic Arts so far seems content to let it slide.
As PCGamesN suggests, at least part of the reason for EA's good nature toward the project may be the fact that the original Battlefield 2142 is no longer playable. It fell victim to the Great Gamespy Shutdown of '14, and while EA originally said it was “working on transitioning [affected] games after the shutdown so you'll still be able to play them,” it changed its mind about a month later, owing to the “significant technical hurdles” involved in keeping them up.
So it's a win for EA in just about every possible way: The Battlefield franchise gets a little extra attention in the lead-up to Battlefield 1, someone else does all the heavy lifting, and EA gets credit for not stomping it out like a grass fire. And the revival is seeing some action, with server stats indicating a Monday afternoon concurrent player count in the high-300s. For the purposes of comparison, that wouldn't be enough to crack the top 100 on Steam, but it's pretty good for a fan revival of a dead FPS that—sorry, fans—was never what you'd call a runaway success in the first place.

I tried it, nostalgia wore off quickly. Movement has this occasional stutter to it, hit reg is worse than modern BF games, recoil patterns are bizarre.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

We will get right to the point: Electronic Arts Inc.' legal team has contacted us and nicely asked us to stop distributing and using their intellectual property. As diehard fans of the franchise, we will respect these stipulations.
Over the past 3 and a half years, Revive Network has filled a void in nearly 1 million players' hearts by bringing favorite titles back to life after online services were closed after the GameSpy shutdown. Only a few months ago, we took on the task of bringing multiplayer services online for a fan-favorite, Battlefield Heroes. The public reception for our efforts on this title were massive, and we never expected it to become as big as it was.
At this time, file downloads will be disabled.
This is probably the part where we have to say good bye. Before we leave the battlefield, we would like to thank all of the developers, artists, moderators, and last but not least every single player that helped make all of this a reality. Without you, it would not have become such a great time.
Well, TBH i was surprised those Revive projects survived so long and EA didn't do anything till now.
Still sucks though.
// Actually there is an Update:

UPDATE:
Here is the notice that EA sent to the team behind Revive Network. From the looks of it, EA only demands the team to stop distributing the game client downloads from its site. Moreover, the team should stop using EA’s trademarks, logos, and artwork on its sites. HOWEVER, the Revive Network launcher and its servers can still function. The notice does not say anything about them, so the team is free, legally, to keep the MP modes of those games alive. If the team terminates the servers, then it’s their decision and no; it was not forced by EA. Not only that, but this notice is among the nicest notices we’ve ever seen.
