I'd just like to warn anyone who still want to play warlords after installing BtS, you can't without the CD because no crack is out. (BtS installs the newest patch for warlords, 2.13)

are you running Vista? i think the new audio architecture really screws up some games. i know that Creative drivers for Vista are shit, i had to go back to XP to run Civ4 and BF2.

Doesn't seem like much to put in an expansion, in comparison to Civ, Colonization is pretty limited in it's scope.

Isnt a expansion is standalone. And there are a lot the features to implement

So true
Yesterday, I discovered very impressive mod - BUG 3.6 (BTS Unaltered Gameplay mod, that polishes and improve GUI, Advisors, unit selection, adds city placement planning, notification system, and so on).
Combination of BUG 3.6 + BTS 3.17 Unofficial Patch 0.21 + Varietas Delectat v5 is highly recommended.

Hey I've been out of the loop for awhile, do these mod packs or any mod pack that improves some of the aspects you mention include the ranged bombardment mod? I remember there were a few that included this but the AI didn't use it correctly or had bugs.

Nope, just bug fixes, improvements and graphic enchantments that don't alter game play.

i never played civ4, should i just install the expansion packs along right from the start?
worried that they might "interweave" too much with the vanilla CIV4, but its no problem if they are fully seperat playable

Stefan - By expansion packs do you mean the warlords and beyond the sword expansion packs releases by the game developers? If so, then yes just install them as they add a lot of depth to the Vanilla Civ4.
If you mean some fan made add-ons then most require the two expansion packs above. Player made packs are in a seperate folder and dont copy over any of the original vanilla civ data so you can play without it messing up your vanilla game.
Civ4 is incredibly indepth especially with the Rise of Mankind addon. You should start by playing vanilla civ4 and get some overview of the game. Once you start you just cant stop...very addictive game with tons of replay value.

As hehehemann suggested, you should start with unaltered version to get your feet wet so to say
Go with Beyond the Sword(BTS) expansion, as it expanded, improved, re-balanced SO much from the vanilla. Skip Warlords expansion as all its features minus the scenarios are included within BTS.
So, for the best unaltered gameplay, I suggest the following setup
**** Installing mods to Assets, makes all their content available to the mods installed to Mods.
Additionally(after playing a few turns ) you may want to install these mods too
- Civ4 Blue Marble v4.50 Gold [ http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6 ]
Mod replaces terrain graphics with new terrain based on images from NASA Blue Marble project.
Vanilla civ 4 terrain has very toxic colors I suggest installing it with Terrains and Leaderheads options only. Also I prefer 'Darker' style.
I don't like Themes cause they mess with the fonts, and I don't like Backgrounds cause they make text harder to read.
- Varietas Delectat v5 [ http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7358 ]
In vanilla version, units of the same classes for all civs looks the same for the exception of the Unique units. This mod changes that.
As there is no installer for this one and it was designed to be used as mod, you need to unarchive it to the Mods folder inside the game's folder. As a result you will have a Varietas Delectat folder inside the Mods folder.
There are three options to run it
- Launch game, load mod via Advanced -> Load a Mod
- Change Mod = 0 to Mod = Mods\Varietas Delectat in CivilizationIV.ini located in My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\
- Add /mod="Varietas Delectat" to the target field of BTS shortcut, for example "C:\Civ4\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyonSword.exe" /mod="Varietas Delectat"
Well, after playing for a few months you would have no difficulties with massive gameplay altering mods. Cause most of them are re-imaginated, custom tailored version of the game balanced on particular combination of map size and game speed.
