I've been playing the beta of this and HOLY SHIT was I surprised by what this game has become. Basically, think Galactic Civilizations 2 in REAL TIME. There's research, you build stuff on planets, you colonize new planets, and you explore new planets/solar systems.
Just like in GalCiv2 you start off with one planet and a fog of war all around you. You can see links to other "planets" in your solar system that you can hyper-drive to (think freelancer) and explore. It really reminded me of Space Empires 4/5 where there are links to each solar system and when you send a scout there the solar system becomes explored and you can click on the planets/asteroids/whatever and get the stats on them. I discovered space pirates in two of the three planets in my solar system and they ganged up on my scouts and obliterated them!
The graphics have improved A LOT over what's in the post above. Here are a few screenshots I took. I resized them down from 1600x1200 to 800x600 so they don't spam the post:
You see some shots of a planet up close, a ship engaging a pirate, a zoomed out look at a solar system, and then the last screenshot is of 4 solar systems.
Interesting little facts:
1. You can customize the galaxy just like in GalCiv2, how big it is, what kind of events there are, what empires you face, and so on.
2. There's a MINIMUM of 20 planets per solar system.
3. There's a MAXIMUM of only 4 solar systems (hopefully will change before it's released)
4. Yet to see any gas giants or other things besides normal "rocky" planets and asteroids. So far I've seen desert, terran, volcanic, and ice planet types.
5. Asteroids all over the place. Seems to be the main source of income. I think there's different types of asteroids that yield different resources as well.
6. Pirates all over the goddamn place. A real pain in the ass.
7. Solar system/Galaxy colors change for every new game which can DRASTICALLY change how the game looks. I've seen orange, white, and blackish solar systems so far and they all look really different.
8. If You look really hard, you can find the cracked beta floating around out there...

Certainly interesting, if it can match the scale of GalCiv 2 it'll be something i'll check out.

Ok I just had to post in this thread.
I have been hanging out for a new 4X game for a long long time and sadly this one falls short of my expectations of a new 4X game. I have been playing Beta2 since it came out and there is quite a few things that detract from the game.
- Lack of tech tree
While the tech tree itself looks very big, it is easily exhausted towards the mid to end game. There isn't enough variety between the different paths in the tech tree
- Lack of ship variety / customisation
There is 3 classes of ship, light med and heavy and there is about 5 choices in each of the cateogries, this isn't enough especially because there is very limited ship customisation. The only effect your research has on your ships is that they get more +'s to their stats, move quicker, target better etc etc
- Lack of planetary upgrade
There just isn't enough 'planet' customisation that you can do, this includes the structures that orbit the planet, there is only 1 type of planet defense gun and 1 type of hanger (granted that you can build two types of fighter squardons).
- Lack of combat organisation
You can't get your fleets to co-ordinate with each other. For example if I have ship yard A and ship yard B you cant' get them to produce ships and arrive at the same time to whatever front you're fighting on.
Now, I know alot of the hardcore fans of this game will protest against my post but remember this, its not all doom and gloom however there are better games out there that this one could have been modeled on. GalCiv2, MOO etc etc. This game doesn't suck as much as genesis rising does, and its not as good as GalCiv.
I would only give this one 3 stars, you will get bored of this game very quickly if you're a true hardcore 4X fan.
Hope that helps people make an informed decision on what to do with your bandwidth.

Sins of a Solar Empire has gone gold! It starts shipping February 4th. However i hate how stardock does their protection. Look here http://blogs.ign.com/Stardock_Games/2008/01/29/78711/
Lame!
Also kakar, if you look at gamespot's new video you might change your mind. The final is totally different from beta 2.

What is so lame exactly? That they of their customers? Or that they make it hard for you to crack without hurting paying customers?
I think this this is really a great "copy protection" system, where nothing really invasive is used (ala BioShock).

You can only get patches through the stardock launcher. They won't be available anywhere else, that is my problem with the protection. I really don't care about it being cracked, it will eventually after release. I probably will buy this since the developers are the original HW:Cataclysm makers and i loved that game.

Stardock rocks, this'll be a must buy for sure. Good to see they have a good protection system, this is one of the best devs on the PC, and they're not huge as e.g Valve or anything, they deserve/need the $$$...

It's not developed by Stardock, but by Ironclad Games.

Personally while i like the philosophy of stardock, i really didnt like their earlier games. Then again, this one has the potential to dethrone SOTS in terms of multiplayer space strategy gaming.
For me, the trick was not to look at it with the expectations i would have for a 4x game, but to look at it as some kind of supcomized homeworld clone, with 4x elements added to its gameplay
Can't wait to get my hands on it, and if the game is as good as it looks like, i'll definitely buy it as well. That it has no copy protection is a serious advantage. I really hate those damn CDs/DVDs, even if just images.
As for patches, i don't see a problem there.
Two things can happen:
1) The game is good enough for me to buy it, in which case i will buy it.
2) The game isnt worth buying, in which case i would not need the patches either.
So let's hope for an early release.

True, but it's distributed by Stardock and they also help Ironclad with the development (at least according to the gamespy preview).

I can agree that the kind of copy protection used is way better for the customers. (Un)fortunately a few groups still cracked and released patches for Galactic Civilizations 2 like BMDOX and TNT... So it's not foolproof but it's not such a hassle anyone who bought it at least.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!
