Does the computer freeze up completely or just the video player. I ran into this recently with win dvd and a fresh install of windows. Seems that win dvd does not include things like svcd codecs and the like.
If this is the case you might try installing one of those all in one codec packs. I used ace codec pack because it pretty much includes every codec known to man.

Try another dvd codec/app like Intervideo, Nero, powerdvd etc. If quicktime still works it shouldn't be a hardware problem. What about DivX, XviD and WMV?

well, my computer totally freezes. second, i am using inter dvd the real copy...and when i watch movies like porn, that freezes too. i tried something else that plays everything, forgot what it was called something that started with the letter B. but that didn't work either. Can't quicktime play dvds any? thats what i really want to correct..

I suggest getting the k-lite codecs
they inculde the "Media Player Classic" which is among the best players available
And the whole package is the best codecs pack (according to many people, including me)
EDIT: See later post for valid link.
Media Player Classic plays both DVDs and SVCDs
If that fails to sove your problem, or even if it doesn't, I strongly suggest you give your computer a good maintenance session.
Mandatory steps in maintenance:
1- Add/spy ware killing. Do this with "Spybot Seek and Destroy" AND "Adaware"
2- Good old virus scan. More than one is prefered. Use the trend micro online one if you dont have an AV intalled (which is imo suicide) http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
3- do a full defrag. You can use the windows built-in one, but apps like Diskeeper do a much better job and are less of a pain to handle. I recommend getting diskeeper
After that your comp should be cleaner, and things should overall work better/faster
Have fun.
EDIT: almost forgot to say: add "Windows Updates" to the list. Very important.

HOLY!
I didnt go to the end of my own link, since I already had the pack. Never saw they charged
You can get it here though:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
and I'm sure those don't charge. They're the ones I have installed, and thats where I downloaded them

Any chance you got a laptop? Possibly a eMachine M68xx model?
