yeah those games used 8-Bit paletted textures , new cards don`t have that anymore in they drivers and in dx9c / dx10 making it impossible to run those games in hardware mode ,
so you can say that most 97 - 2001 games are now not compatible with todays graphic cards , yeah you can run (some) in software mode but thats not the point
ok so lets assume that when they made Vista they knew that , ok so we have now 2001-2007 games from the win98/winxp that used dx8-9c (dx7a doesn't count its still had 8-Bit paletted textures support) and now we get a new DX10 with new Api that needs new hardware , and to run new stuff they needed to cut the old like dx8-9 support dx9c is still there masked by dx9L but its still not compatible with all dx9c ...
Conclusion is only one : HOPE that the SP1 for Vista will have dx9L updates , or HOPE for Virtual PC 2008 with DX3d support that will enable Hardware acceleration in dx6-dx7a titles

No chance on either VPC/VMWare/[Whatever] having support for d3d acceleration beyond the basics, or DX9L updates. MS is basically done with DX9 HW or SW.

It's called evolution... Do you scream when old dos apps don't work under 2000/XP/Vista?

Yes, im pissed I can't play syndicate wars without having to use dosbox, it's not the matter of it not working even though it's old stuff, it's the fact it's sad you can't run what you want to without having to rig shit to work.
Sad day.

i call bullshit on that
i can still play thief and everything just fine
there's no reason they would ever cut that out
they can just write a simple routine to convert the texture to 16 or 32bit
which is probably what they're doing now anyway

a curious effect
but has absolutely nothing to do with texture bitdepth
it's clearly a 16bit screenmode dithering bug in drivers

Well, if you make me choose between better performance in newer games using SM3.0/SM4.0 and some old games having glitches, the choice is clear.

and the most funny thing about it is Double Agent
Code: |
Question:
I have an Nvidia Geforce 8800 and my graphics do not appear correctly.
Answer:
The Nvidia Geforce 8800 is not a supported video card for use with Splinter Cell Double Agent. If you own a Geforce 8800, you still have the ability to play the game.
First, make sure you have the latest drivers installed. The original driver released by Nvidia is not compatible with the geometry in Double Agent.
Next, turn off HDR within the game video options. If HDR is left enabled, the background of the 3D environment will appear distorted with different hues of color. |

This is Ubi's fault for coding their like shit, not nVidia's fault. I wonder though if the same issues exist with the x2900 cards.
