This post is generated more out of curiosity than looking for ways to abuse the system.

First off. I hate software firewalls. Even the most lightweight ones like Comodo still slow me down in terms of when I want to play online games, etc.

However I like to play with applications alot. So I am always hearing people mention this thing called NAT used in conjunction with routers. Me personal I have a Linksys WRT54GS.

Now here is a scenario. Lets say I downloaded the latest and greatest <insert name here> warez crack. I get a serial number and Viola ...off and running.

Now with Software firewalls it catches those sneaky leaks that the software uses to try and dial home, via legit processes (generic host process, web browser) ...or using its own method inside the software. This is good. 1 click and I stop it from ever pulling that crap on me again.

Yet is there a way to do this without a firewall, by using my router? NAT. Whatever, and then simply run windows firewall or something that will not lag my machine out?

Thanks in advance.

Could someone point me the right direction to edumacate myself if so?

its possible if you know the ip/domain the app wants to connect to. you can block this on the router (dont know atm if its possible with the linksys firmware, might be you need dd-wrt or similiar). but saying this prog doesnt have access to the internet isnt possible. the router doesnt know which packet is from which program. and this has nothing to do with NAT (or rather PAT if youre precise).

hope this helps

Thank you for the response. I now feel like a total newb. I have played with tons of software firewalls and am torn between Comodo and Outpost. However both slow me down for gaming.

Do you or anyone have any suggestions on some good firewall or (insert name here) type software that blocks programs attempts to connect to the internet, that is lightweight?

Appreciated

The most lightweight fix off the top of my head is not any sw firewall at all. All you need to do is find the hostname its trying to reach(google 'sysinternals tcpview') and modify your 'hosts' file in system32\drivers to redirect it to your machine(127.0.0.1). In most cases this will result in a timeout and the proggie will think its server is down which will bypass the whole routine. Viola, no sw eating up precious resources just to block one annoying/retarded protection.

NAT isn't a firewall, it is a way of routing external traffic to internal address. Your router is already doing it.

Again I would like to thank everyone who replied. I found a simple program blocker called "Look N Stop" it is very simple. You just say what is allowed internet access and what is not and there you go. The problem is however that many software developers are getting very sly at sneaking out to the internet via other processes....

Think I will just stick with Comodo, which btw does have a nice feature to let you force apps to loopback.
