Any movie filmed on green screen (sin city, sky captain & the world of tomarrow) are absolutly STUNNING in HD. Green screen movies need all the quality they can get and lemme tell ya, watching Sky Captain in 720p was effing AMAZING, wish there was a 1080

Recommend you check out Black Hawk Down in HD. The quality is extreme compared to normal DVD.

All movies' quality is extreme when compared to DVD. Too bad that some movies that would shine on HDDVD and/or BluRay (i.e. Armageddon, Sin City), don't get released in those mediums.

some hd movies are made from shitty source material too, so much to the point where it completely negates the point of the HD type.
personally ill only stick to recently released FX heavy films when i make the move to buying HD movies, unless a remastered old release gets a really great review (ie, i loved what they did remastering alien, it'd be great to see what they can do with HD on that film... aliens, alien 3, and alien resurrection wont look that impressive though, especially aliens - my fav)

sin city will get a hd release, i guarantee you. most likely around the time sin city 2 gets its theatrical... armageddon... who knows... wouldnt surprise me eventually. personally im waiting for the rock to get the HD treatment (if it hasnt allready), and advent children - HORRIBLE dialogue, crappy story (yeah ive played the damn game), and the most idiotically pathetic english dub ever... but it sure is pretty to look at...
PS:
starship troopers would be the SHIT on hd!! ive allready got it on dvd, but id buy it again on any hd format... that movie was awesome.

yeah downloading it now. like i said in another thread, id buy it if hd was really avaliable in my fricken country, and i could actually afford a hd or bluray player  ... some day ill probably buy this, but till then, downloading'll suit me

 Obviously you haven't seen anything HD. I notice a huge difference even on my laptop.
I'll agree that 1080 i/p is for 40"+ but 720p should be standard just as the whatever xvid resolutions used were standard once (640x272?). |

oh man, i just did a direct comparison between my 720 van helsing (its a GREAT film dammit, you bastards just have shite taste!) with my xvid copy, and oh man... would anyone mind if i posted some comparison shots?

no its ok, i asked and she said it was ok
ive enlarged the xvid rip to match the 720p res, then cropped just to show a direct visual comparison of the same frame - should also add that both xvid versions used for comparison are the traditional 2cd with 5.1 quality.

granted the 300 comparison isnt as immediately noticable, but you can definately see far more texture and definition, and when the things in motion, its even more apparent... but for the van helsing comparison... f**king come ON, thats amazing clarity you have to admit... and this is just 720p...
basically the people that think hd is generally pointless are the same people who think vhs quality is 'good enough' too... and we all know how crazy those people are...

There is a huge difference when watching HD material and regular movies on a large screen. Of course there is no need to bother with HD if you have a small or maybe even medium sized screen. Also the quality of each HD movie differs because of encoding and source material.
