Isn't that what the "send anonymous information" notification Vista shows is all about? How's dumb enough to enable that anyway?

No it is not, this isn't something vista informs you about, it just does it per default and you accept that when you agree to the license.

Now it's easier then ever... In the NT4 days, you actually had to scroll down a few pages before you could agree. Now it's just "I Agree" and that's it.

Well actually in Poland , 320 people who used Vista and had installed on they system a illegal MS Office 2003 or 2007 where charged a fine . It was a big topic here in TV and in the papers . Those people where actually shocked that police came to they house with a arrest warrant , and the news that the software called MS that it was illegal .
Anyway even in winxp when you use Peer2Guardian and you set MS IPs for block , you can see that winxp sends some info to MS Hotmail when you use winxp - and i don`t even use they service .

Sounds insane to me lol. No judge should ever agree to signing warrants based on some dumb ass information MS gives!
Do you have more info on this? I want to read more about it. It sounds nuts to me.

well found only this will try to find more ,
http://www.firmowy.com.pl/news-566.html
but it redirects to the Poland local news paper Gazeta Wyborcza ( Gazeta.pl ) but looks like they deleted that article from they archives , will try to find in other news parers ...
As i remeber it was about Redmond adding new system for finding illegal MS Offices to they updates
and those who updated they system automatically sended a info to Redmond that they use a Illegal MS Office 2003 or 2007 and then Redmond send those information to the local Police of a region that had the higher rate of pirate copy`s .
will try to find more info on TVN archives
edit: http://wiadomosci.osemka.pl/html/news/naloty_w_jastrzebiu_policja_namierzyla_duza_liczbe_piratow/3140
here is more but as you see its in Polish , it writes in here that MS send the info to the police where to look for the pirate dealers !!
maybe some one that have seen it can post it here

Thing is, many of the "phone home" features in Vista are present in XP as well.
Most of these Vista processes ask for your permission before they act.
If your completely paranoid, start disabling features. Use a decent firewall, heck for supreme paranoia, unplug yourself from the net.

Yeah, but it isn't hip to diss XP, dummy. Dissing Vista is the thing now.

It clearly says -
Quote: | "By using these features, you consent to the transmission of this information. Microsoft does not use the information to identify or contact you." |
So technically if you do get a call from the police you can sue microsoft since their terms and conditions say that they dont use your information to identify or contact...
I highly doubt they will be sending personal data out. Im guessing the only information sent to MS is like Bug reports, Programme crash reports, what Codecs are needed for WMP, Spyware found on your PC etc..
