What were your favorite games prior to the 'graphics mean everything' craze going on now a days? I really hate these simplistic, bloom gaymes. No story, always linear as fuck and usually terrible gameplay!

Gameplay than polish! It seems the other way around except they never get to the gameplay any more, so long as it looks good. :\

The previous TES games where more about gameplay than graphics, just look at daggerfall with a landmass nearly twice the size of UK, tons of dialogue and lore albeit most NPC's are quite generic and shallow, large amounts of quests with all sorts of objectives such as kidnapping, monster slaying, murder and the usual item finding, several guilds with strict requirements and it's even possible to be marked if you fail too often or ignore some of the darker guilds such as the brotherhood and the thieves, ofcourse warriors can't really use the mages guilds and you can only choose one specific order and temple among several, branching main questline with multiple endings, tons of creatures and items and a very mature and dark world.

Other recommendations would be the games that Troika made before the went out of business, Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil and Bloodlines were quite good despite numerous bugs though various patches and even fanmade fixes helps correct that.

The gothic serie wasn't much about graphics either and had very entertaining gameplay instead though the third game was released a little too early and since the studio has left the publisher there will probably not be much more support for it aside from the community patch project.
(Gothic 4 is in developement though but it's another studio)

Fallout also has it's own style and great gameplay even though the second game can be a little silly sometimes with a ton of jokes and easter eggs, Tactics were quite fun as well but also quite different from the two main games.
(And yes, I do look forward to seeing how Fallout 3 ends up, could be fun even though it's very different from the previous games.)

Deus Ex is probably a classic title and the sequel Invisible War can also be enjoyable even though it's not as good as the first game.
(System Shock and System Shock 2 are also recommended despite their age.)

Boiling Point could also have been great game but the large amount of bugs and issues even with the 2.0 patch does detract quite a bit from the playability.
(Large amount of bloom as well but I think it can be turned off. )

The GTA serie allows the player to do a little of everything in a virtual city enviroment but I personally thought that the "gangsta" theme in San Andreas was a little over the top.

EDIT: Bioware/Black Isle and Obsidian did some pretty good games as well such as the Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment titles with later games including Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic with the latest game being Jade Empire.
(Dragon age sounds interesting as well and Mass Effect will probably be a big hit on the 360.)

I like the poland. Nice country.

But I get your point. I really hate all the nextgen/overbright/bloom crap without any innovative gameplay.
But games like Overlord (yeah, it's linear, but still creative and fun) showed us that there still is potential for real games. Very Happy

Fallout was teh shit! I agree with the gangsta thing, bit too much. Elder scrolls II: Daggerfall - I'm not too into Bethsada games, very odd gameplay to me. Doesn't seem right, FPS swords n' spells and what not. I prefer a sidescroller or a third person for that kinda thing.

"TES" - ??

For a recap so I can keep it all organized and start getting on those games:

Boiling Point
Dues Ex & Dues Ex: Invisible War
System Shock 1 & 2
Temple of Elemental Evil
Bloodlines
Gothic Series

Sorry, TES = The Elder Scrolls serie. Smile
(Arena - 1992 , Daggerfall - 1996 , Morrowind - 2002 , Oblivion - 2006 with the spinoff serie Battlespire 1998 and Redguard 1999.)

EDIT: There's probably alot of other, less known titles with great gameplay as well since the ones I mentioned are quite famous or even infamous such as Boiling Point due to the amount of bugs and Invisible War due to the hype and high expectations from Deus Ex.

Overlord could have been so much more. Just not enough features to keep my interest and the movement sucked! Moving the minions wasn't on point, ya know? I hate when they scatter, lil' buggers.

I'll admit the story was funny but it's a bit late for the 'be the bad guy' bit by now. I'm afraid the next trend of games will be that whole choose 'Good or Evil'. I can't wait to go beyond good and evil! Innovation.....

Due to it's age you need DosBox for full functionality, running it natively in XP will cause some minor issues wich is especially noticable with the kill monster type quests since the monster you are assigned to slay will turn invisible.

Official Site:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1&begaming_website_session=60b784c4258120883e1cc5f3e6868017

CVS:
http://www.aep-emu.de/cvscompile/dosbox.htm
(Official daily builds but slightly more unstable than the above full release.)

Inofficial Builds - YKWong.
http://ykhwong.x-y.net/cvs/frame.html
(Tons of new features such as pixel shaders and direct3d/openglHQ, also alot faster when properly configured - I use this myself and it works great.)

Ultima Online is a great, ugly game. Jagged Alliance 2, the old Sim Cities... ah, those were the days.

Sure is nice Very Happy Very Happy

And bout' the topic - lately there aren't many games which are ugly but highly playable IMO. Oldies - yeah, but not newer games. Actually lately it's easy to tell that a game is shit when looking at gfx - take all "value" games like terrorist takedown or sth like that.

There is a funny thing about 2 games actually - Serious Sam (the first part) and Far Cry. They both were supposed to be highlighting their engines (Serious and Cryengine) but when they came out it was a shoch - highly playable and ultra-hiper-supa-dupa gfx (in their "times"). And that's a cool thing.

I think the best example of "unpolished" games are text games - like in dos times. No gfx, just ur imagination (or maybe ascii used as gfx).

you should rename the topic to 'good games with bad graphics'
unpolished and unpretty aren't the same thing
good unpolished games, as in games that work but have klunky gameplay mechanics or lack other polish;
vampire: masquerade - bloodlines
operation flashpoint, and the subsequent armed assault
early hitman games
thief3
deus ex
uhh.. forgetting a lot
good games with crap graphics;
dangerous waters.. and a bunch of other simulators
a huge pile of old games (thief 1&2, rainbow6:raven shield, fallout 1&2, etc etc etc)
penumbra & penumbra overture
serious sam
everything by introversion games
sam&max season1
many turn based strategy games, like 'making history'

Right, but many of the games mentioned are simply old and had cool gfx in their times (Serious Sam, Deus Ex, Fallout). Other than that, i approve on the post.

How far back are we willing to go here?

Questron (RPG) on the C64 was one of my all time favorite games. It can still be downloaded and played with emulators.

Ultima I, II, and III.

Ultima Underworld.

Pirates.

Just so many I could name that stand out in my mind...

Deus Ex is right up there as well.

I agree... the games have just become so stupified... but what can you expect? People are asking on the console forums about the "how to" to do the stupidest things in Overlord... my God. It's not exactly the most complex game in the world... there's a reason why games are linear and such now... if people have to play a game without a cheat they think it is too hard.

I bought my son a Wii and one of his friends was over here. Bought it this weekend for his B-day. Any way, the first thing the little turd (his friend) did was get on the net and look for cheats for the games we bought him. pathetic. I proceeded to yank the internet connection from the back of the computer in his room and blocked his room on the router.

Yah, I suppose any game I is gonna turn into 'un-polished' or what ever you'd like to call it, soon enough based on our perception to the newer graphics coming out.

Try and play some PS1 racing games especially, I notice it the most when trying to play older ps1 games after playing anything by today's standards.

All in all I just want the best fucking game ever I guess, funny thing, I wouldn't even know what that would be to me now a days! Perhaps I've grown to picky and don't appreciate the games that are out now... but than again.... Desperate House wifes was made.
