I know this little gem of a theory has been around before, but it seems like it's all over the fuckin' place now. How stupid can people get? Gaming addiction? Please.

These fuckin' doctors must be bored out of their ass to whip this stupid shit up.

I just heard some stupid dickhead say gaming addiction is classified as 2 hours of gaming a day, and that is destroys lives in a similar fashion to alcohol, gambling, and drugs. WHAT? What a stupid fuck.

I hate television these days, they let the stupidest piles of shit rant about whatever they want, and people who don't know any better because they are fuckin' 60 and retarded eat it right up. "IF THE GUY ON TV SAID IT HE MUST BE RIGHT, THE DOCTORS ARE SO SMART!"

They can go fuck themselves twice a fuckin' day. They probably never shut the fuck up for 2 hours a day, they must be addicted to being stupid fucks.

Oh well.

Well if you're addicted if you play 2h a day then I've been addicted for a long time now. Strange how I still have a social life and all that.

I guess you're addicted if you watch tv more then 2 hours a day then too. One move and you're an addict. OH NOES RUN FOR YOUR LIVES.

it's an addiction when you can't live without it. when it absorbs your life. Smile

otherwise it's just a time consuming hobby Smile

Well, a friend of mine quit his job just to play WOW and he lives off social security now.
If you're that engrossed in gaming it's not exactly unreasonable to say that it can become an addiction.
Calling 2 hours of gaming per day an addiction is just retarded tho', next thing they're gonna claim we all have to work 17 hours a day and all forms of entertainment will be outlawed...

Gotta agree with Kuroi. Some people can get addicted to games. When you're getting behind on your work, your place is a mess, you're a mess and other indicators. Then I'm sorry but theres something wrong. That's not to say it's down to the game though. It's up to each and every person to control their time spent on an individual passion or it will become an addiction. It's like that with everything be it games, alcohol, drugs and even sex. I've always thought a everything in moderation and a little is excess has never done anyone any harm. Just don't let it rule other things that are important to you. Such as day to day things.

That's completely generalized though, Jenni. They just love to point out games lately for some reason, why? Everyone is after the game's industry today.

Taking ANY activity in moderation is obvious, or should be. Why attack games?

Cause people who hurt people play games. they blame games on everything because they can't blame the parents. You rarley see R rated action movies nowadays. It's all PG this, PG that. A lot of dark humor. Some blood etc.

Games can't be censored as such. a 9 year old could pick up a violent game, shoot his way through the afternoon, go to school the next day, beat a kid who insulted his moms stripping career, and he'll be blamed for playing violent games. Not because his moms never home to take care of him and teach him some values, but because he sits on his ass and shoots people in a video game.

It's easy to blame something that can't fight back. Imagine if people blamed parents for their lack of interest in their childs. They'll go all crazy and never vote and you'll never get re-elected. Blaming games, gives parents some sort of leeway. They're not to blame anymore. It's the game. They're fine with that. They can go back to sipping their martinis, while their kids beg for attention while violently beating minorities to a pulp.

(fuck my hand hurts like hell from writing all of this. Razz)

I am not ashamed to admit that I am indeed addicted to gaming. I don't watch TV. Luckily, my addiction for sports and martials arts and healthy food negates most negative effects it brings. My social life, however, pretty much consists of either sparring against a few friends, or gaming with a few other friends, and my job/education. I can honestly say I'm doing quite well in that respect, I make far more than any other 19 year old I personally know does and have a very respectable job. (Well, for some people. Anarchists and such loathe it.)

You can get addicted to almost anything. Games are a relatively new innovation with addictive potential, hence most of the older generation can't relate to them at all and it becomes a target for them.

An addiction is negative by definition, being reliant on something material for happiness is never a good thing. The reality is that most people are addicted to something, they are probably not even aware of it, until it's taken away that is.

so what they say if you do anything 2 hours a day, you are addicted to it. If you walk 2 hours a day, you are addicted to walking. if you spend 2 hours a day at your work, your addicted to your work, etc...

addiction is when you arent gaming, you are thinking about and try to game as fast as possible

lol, games addiction?

my dad was 40 y when red alert was released.

And he is a military colonel, so guess what...

He got up @ 6am for work and was back @ 7-8pm. Then food time, working some hours at home for the sports thing where he is president from and at 10-11 he started playing red alert until 12-1am.

And on saturday he got up 10 am to play red alert all day.

Was he addicted? dont think so, i found it cool that my dad played games, although he sucked in 1v1

After 2-3 years red alert was gone and age of empires came.

He just wants to win things, competitive. But he still went running every day almost, did his work @ home and worked 12h a day.

So some stupid yuppie psych comes and tells us that 2h/day is addiction. djeez. So every hobby with competitive behaviour is an addiction then?

For me addictions can only be bad for your health. it is stupid to say, you are a pro gamer, you can game 10h/day. because it is your job. But another person is addicted when he plays 2h/day??

As far as i know with alcohol or drugs or medication that is not the fact Wink

Thats because every form of passive entertainment has been attacked at some point. TV was and so was radio. Go further back and you would have been burnt at the stake for reading the wrong thing.

Theres nothing new here apart from what they're attacking and I can happily go on with my addiction without it doing me any harm.

However some people take it too far. They let their hobby take away the rest of their lives and the rest of their lives suffer as a result. That's when it can and should be attacked. Take that idiot that commited suicide because of eq1. Not really the games fault. It was totally down to him.

You're missing the point, the wiseguy compared gaming with alcohol and other addictions, not something you have to do in order to survive. Still, he shouldn't have done that, because gaming has simply become a part of our society, you can't deny that. Sure, playing a few hours straight (and thinking about games whenever you're away from home) every day makes you an addict, but that - small - group of people is prone to addictions.
