1. OS doesn't really matter
2. FF: just not a clamshell
3. don't really need QWERTY keys, although it would be an added bonus
4. I would like a decent camera, although I realize that camera phones can never be as good as real phones. however, still good for a picture you'd otherwise miss.

Well then you really need to decide which way to go - Windows Mobile with large touch-screens and WLAN almost in every one of'em or Symbian which is more phone-like and only a few have WLAN.
Anyways, I'd suggest Nokia E61i as a WLAN-enabled QWERTY phone. I use it now and it's really great. The screen is big so you can even watch some TV eps on it.
Nokia N80 is also a great phone, I had it before E61i. WLAN enabled, awesome sound playback, like a small speaker. Decent battery life and a good cam.
There's a multitude of Windows Mobile based smartphones and communicators with WLAN, but there's a big problem of availability. The most popular in russia Qtek brand doesn't even list North America on their website. But it's absolutely the same as I-mate (same hardware, different label) so if you have I-mate in Canada, then I'll give you a couple of recommendations.

yes, you can get i-mates here ... however, I can find a shitload of pre-owned N80s, which is why I was thinking about getting that one...
it seems to me that many of the windows mobile based phones are more expensive .... anyways, here is a site that has a bunch
http://www.softpocket.ca/en/pdas/index.html
also, it would have to have removable memory... and at a minimum accept a 2 GB card...

WOah, that's a fucking ripoff.
I guess you should go for N80 (preferably black) + 2gb miniSD. Or E61i. The final decision should be made 'live' judging from how it feels in your hand.

I've got a N80, its overall a good smartphone. Camera quality is actually pretty good, as well as the vid-cam function.
Bearing in mind that this is a phone so the camera isnt as good as a proper one costing less than half..
Mediaplayback is good as well, just chuck those mp3s in there and it will scan id3tags and put all info in a library so you can sort songs by album, artist, genre and stuff. The player has all basic functions and is easy to use. Playing self recorded videos looks surprisingly good (not that good on pc though), the screen is high resolution and crisp.
One big issue is that the sliding part of the phone quite easily moves by accident in my pocket. The problem is that if you move the numpad the phone unlocks, when that happens its "call your friends with your ass" galore! I know several others with the same model who also has this problem, there are a few programs you can download to fix this though. The phone wont unlock just by sliding.
Still the top part of the phone feels a little cheap.. not the quality you would expect.
I have a 2 Gb card in mine, havent tried with anything bigger though.. I only have bigger cards for my PSP but thats MS pro duo. Maybe it says how big on Nokias web.
Overall a good phone, havent found that many fun games though. Some apps are really useful, and the web browser in the newest firmware is kick-ass! Better than any phone ive tried, nforce webpage works flawlessly aswell
Much better than a Qtek i had before. Browser was MS crap, mozilla for windows mobile isnt really any good either. A lot more fun games for Win mobile though, great fun with games which used the touchpad as input!

Yup, thje sliding part can happen sometime, but as hottar has mentioned there are fixes and you can also buy the belt clip pouch or whatever it's called.
But even this minor problem can't beat how good the phone is.
Get the black version, it looks so much better than the silver one and not cheap at all.
hottar, for games and apps check PM.

absolutely no diff with the standard version. there's some online search software pre-installed in the IE, but nobody uses it.

The first samsung galaxy s is a nice phone (the screen is a little bit weird though) and pretty cheap now a days... but if you are used to ios, maybe you should stay with apple? Not everybody is happy with what they get with android
If you still want an android -> I love my SGS2

Why? Both Symbian and MeeGo are lame duck operating systems, dead on arrival, as Nokia transitions to Windows Phone 7. Who in his right mind would buy something that would see no further support?

A good alternative to the iPhone 4 is the Galaxy S(the first one) or the HTC Desire. I have a Galaxy S myself and it's REALLY great, the screen is almost on par(sensitivity wise) with the one from the iPhone 4, which is great. And it's also a whole lot cheaper these days. If you have the money though, you should go for the Galaxy S2 straight away, the screen is GINORMOUS, it's got a dual core and it simply kicks major ass. Totally wipes the floor with the iPhone 4, especially hardware related.
The Desire is a tad worse than the Galaxy S, while the hardware is almost the same(1 GHz CPU, bla bla) the screen is smaller, I think. And I didn't like it's form in my hand, it's too curvy for my taste.
You should consider this only if you think Android would suit your needs, if not, go for another iPhone 4.

shame on that nokia n9... really liked it, but as sayed before, meego has no certain future... nonetheless nokia promised "years" of support... i don't buy that, cose is not a masive cell phone...
gonna wait for the next nokia windows phone models and see.
