You can assume, because they did confirm that the trailer is actually rendered in in-game engine, and there doesn't seem to be any parallax/bump maps or other similar stuff, which really makes you think, coz those things are pretty much a must for a 'next-gen' FP game.

Bethseda have said they aren't going to do an isometric game.
They said they are going to do what they do best (in their own words) which is first person perspective.

I think its highly unlikely it would be a complete waste of ressources to start an Isometric game with such great graphics as Oblivion.

In context it's a response to the possible 'perspective' of the game, so whilst of course it's not factual to say that it won't be isometric, it is on the other hand an extremely safe assumption. If they were going to go isometric they would have let the legion of fans know already. As it is the whole thing smacks of fear. They know if they announce officially that it's an FPS they'll have alienated a large proportion of the hardcore fans which (at the moment) form the basis for the hype being generated. It's possible, I hope, that they are holding back for a big surprise but that kind of detail is extremely unlikely.
Everything points to FPS - the comments made and the fact that Oblivion sold more than a few copies on more than one platform.

it looks to me like its gonna be FPS *groans*
that guy in the Power Armor is probably the Avatar, so let me guess who they are trying to sell this to? the Xbox and Halo crowd... *serious groans*
screw it, its a year off anyways, who cares anymore? its a disaster in the making. its gonna rank up there with Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 as PC games destroyed by the console.

Yes I guess it's almost safe to assume that it will be made for consoles and then ported to PC. Isn't that how things works these days?

Why are you guys even hoping and dreaming and wishing. Bethesda is set to rape this..christ I've been calling it since it was announced and its going to come true.
The only way you're going to change that is if you go in and lay waste to their offices to the point where they couldn't recreated minesweeper.

Can any of you morons who scream that this will be an FPS point me to your source? Because as far as i know there is still a genre called First Person Role Playing in which Bethesda actually excels. But hey, you can always use Bethesda's non existing history in FPS as an argument.

Anyway, if it's goin to be first person role playing, how do you think you'll be killing mutants? Swords are off, magic is off, only way are guns and that means FPS. It probably will be some freeroaming FPS with quests, but it you can only kill others with guns that is FPS.
Also, since this is also PS3-XBOX game you can kiss hookers, drugs and slavers, away. |
where have you seen that it will be out for consoles?
EDIT, nevermind just saw it myself and i have to agree with ya. it just went straight to hell with that game, atleast i think so =/

How does it coming out on the 360 and PS3 mean it's going to be any less adult then an exclusive PC game? If it was coming out on the Wii I could see your argument.
Would you class the original Deus Ex as a FPS? Because according to your shitty logic it is.

Betheseda, is banning people and threatening webpages for any kind of nude mods for Oblivion, do you think they'll go completely against company policy and make and R game? If it was pc only there is a small chance, but I see no chances now.
And, Deus Ex is a hybrid FPS with role playing elements, it was advertised as such and noone ever said it was pure rpg. Maybe you could argue that for System shock.

By your logic fallout 1&2 are third person shooters since you can use guns in them.
What decides the game's genre is the aspect it is most focused on, not the weapons you can use.
as for your second point, look up GTA,dead rising and scarface just to name a few.

Funny, because just yesterday i was looking for new mods for oblivion and i could swear that i saw tons of drugs, nudity, gore, and slavery related mods on every major oblivion mod database.
And about deus-ex - a game that you can complete without shooting a single bullet could hardly be classified as FPS.
Sorry for double posting BTW

And why? Cos when they released it they gave it 16+ rating and then it turned out that there is ONE topless lass. They arent banning anyone for those mods, only reason there has been some fuss about contents of the game is due to their small mistake which I just mentioned. This has NOTHING to do with their other projects what so ever. So imo FO have no reason to have less of anything it's known to have in it's first two parts.

And it can also be compleated, by shooting every single opponent. Its a hybrid, its not a traditional RPG like fallout was. Still, I don't care even if it ends up a strategy game, I just want it to be a good game with that fallout mood, and seeing how are they doing things, its not looking good.[/quote]

So would a 'hybrid FPS' as you call it, be such a bad genre for a game set in the Fallout universe? If it's anything like Deus Ex I'd be extremely happy!
Does a game need to have turn based combat and an isometric viewpoint for you to class it as and RPG?

Will you morons chill the fuck out?!? You're all bitching and whining and making assumptions, but you've all overlooked the fact that, beyond the fleeting, purely visual teaser that we've all seen, none of you know jack shit about what Bethesda intends to do with this game.
Mutantius wrote: | I think its highly unlikely it would be a complete waste of ressources to start an Isometric game with such great graphics as Oblivion. |
Uh, what? Do graphics not look as good in third-person? Yeesh. Also, I imagine that, considering that F3 will probably end up coming out nearly three years after Oblivion, that it will look substantially better than Oblivion does.

What the hell in that teaser makes it look like it's going to be an FPS, or is enough for you to deem it a "disaster in the making"? Seriously? That trailer was purely visual, nothing more.
And what makes you think that that Power Armor dude is the player character? Fallout 1 had a power armor dude on the cover, but that doesn't mean you played as him.

They aren't announcing jack shit yet. Just because they haven't come out and said "yeah it will be a third-person RPG" means that it's going to be an action-based first person shooter? What the hell kind of thinking is that? They haven't really announced ANYTHING yet, so anything is possible. Don't you people get that? Again, CHILL OUT.
Ispep wrote: | Everything points to FPS - the comments made and the fact that Oblivion sold more than a few copies on more than one platform. |
Uhhhh, so, you're saying that Oblivion is an FPS? Excuse me? I think you need to step back and reevaluate your statements a bit.
crossmr wrote: | Why are you guys even hoping and dreaming and wishing. Bethesda is set to rape this..christ I've been calling it since it was announced and its going to come true. |
What the hell is your problem? Being needlessly and baselessly pessimistic doesn't make you look cool, if that's what you're thinking. Again, what the hell do you know about this game, for sure? NOTHING, that's what. You've been "calling it," eh? No, you've been bitching and making assumptions, is what you've been doing.
liansk wrote: | Can any of you morons who scream that this will be an FPS point me to your source? Because as far as i know there is still a genre called First Person Role Playing in which Bethesda actually excels. But hey, you can always use Bethesda's non existing history in FPS as an argument. |
Finally, someone with some sense. Although, I must point out that you clearly don't know much about Bethesda's history (but I don't really blame you. Most people didn't know about Bethesda until Morrowind came out, and then even more didn't know them until Oblivion came out), because they do indeed have history with FPSs. Back in the early and mid '90s, they created a number of FPSs based on The Terminator; in fact, some of these Terminator games actually pre-dated the original Doom, so, in actuality, Bethesda was one of the major pioneers in the early FPS arena.
And what even more people don't know, is that Bethesda also has a major history in football, bowling, flight sim, hockey, and racing games. In fact, they made the first physics-based football game on the Amiga back in the mid-80s, which impressed the then-young Electronic Arts so much, that they asked Bethesda to help design the first John Madden Football game.
People typecasting Bethesda and using such generalizations to damn the prospects of Fallout 3 are clearly ignorant, and know nothing of Bethesda's history or versatility. So, in other words, you nay-sayers need to shut the hell up until you know a bit more about this game.
fawe4 wrote: | Anyway, if it's goin to be first person role playing, how do you think you'll be killing mutants? Swords are off, magic is off, only way are guns and that means FPS. It probably will be some freeroaming FPS with quests, but it you can only kill others with guns that is FPS.

Okay, so, in Fallout 1 and 2, you used guns to attack your enemies. Does that make the original games third-person/isometric shooters? No, it doesn't. You can have a gun-combat based, first person game, and still have it be an RPG. You clearly haven't played a large enough variety of games to know this. But even besides that, where's the concrete proof that this game will be first-person to begin with? Again, CHILL OUT until we know more.
And what the hell sort of retarded argument is "since this is also PS3-XBOX game you can kiss hookers, drugs and slavers, away"? Seriously, have you never heard of fucking Grand Theft Auto? And if GTA's inclusion of hookers is too silly, there is more mature and serious sexual content on PS/Xbox games. Ever played Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy? I guess not. And as for druge, it's called NARC. Look it up. And lastly, I don't think that slavers are such a taboo topic that Sony or MS's review boards would ask to have such a think not included in a game. So, yeah, being multiplatform is not going to restrict the content of the game, so just chill.
liansk wrote: | By your logic fallout 1&2 are third person shooters since you can use guns in them.

Again, liansk seems to be the only other person here with any sense at all. Cheers.

Correct. The reason Bethesda is so skittish about such content for Oblivion is that Oblivion was originally rated T. Then, after these nude patches came out, Bethesda got in a shitload of trouble with the ESRB, had to have Oblivion re-rated to M, and they don't want to fuel the fire any more.
Now, if Oblivion had been rated M and carried the "nudity" content descriptor from the very beginning, there would have been no fuss at all. It's only because it was originally rated T that the trouble sprang up. Now, looking at Fallout 3, if they go ahead and make an M-rated from the get-go, which I think it is fairly likely they will do, then yeah, expect all the usual Fallout content.
Bethesda is no stranger to M-rated games. In 1997, they released an Elder Scrolls spin-off called An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire, and it was rated M.

So, you want a game with the Fallout mood, but so far "its not looking good"?!? Okay, again, all you know about the game is that teaser trailer, and do you mean to tell me that that didn't look good?! And it sure as hell looked to have the "Fallout mood" to me!!
I mean, christ, look at how fanservice-y that trailer was, with having vaultboy and bringing back Ron Perlman to do the classic "war never changes" line. You mean to tell me that they would include that stuff, but so blatantly ignore everything else the Fallout fanbase cares about? They include that classic Fallout shit, but you're telling me that the have no understanding of Fallout fans? Again, chill the FUCK out until you know more about this game, and stop being so pessimistic, because it doesn't make you look cool. It just makes you look like a whiny bitch.

Top-down, and any game in which you see your character externally, and play from any perspective other than that of your character, is third person. So, yeah, a top down game is a form of a third-person game.

Jesus what the fuck was the point in writing all that crap.
Deus Ex was a first person shooter with role playing elements. It's a generic fucking term and we all know how good it's console orientated sequel was don't we.
Quote: | Uhhhh, so, you're saying that Oblivion is an FPS? Excuse me? I think you need to step back and reevaluate your statements a bit. |
Oh god. In context it's a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER because I was relating to the perspective of the game. If you actual read what I said you'd know that. Secondly if you've read the comments coming from tight-lipped Bethseda you'd know that they have hinted towards staying with the tried and true. It's safe then to assume that they will be taking more than the odd glance at their multi-award winning, best selling TES franchise during this process.
